Download or read book Dreams of a Farmer's Wife written by Jeanette Dyess Ryan and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True stories of a city man from Kentucky who came to rural Alabama where he married a country girl in the 1950's. His heart's desire was to own a few acres of land and become a farmer even though his spouse never desired to be a "A Farmer's Wife." However, she toiled alongside her husband and children as she held fast to her dreams of someday building her dream house... Jeanette fondly looks back on the years when the rains came, the crops flourished and the market prices were advantageous. During those years her family felt as if the hard labor and long hours paid off. Life on the farm was demanding with little time for family vacations, but her children lived life to the fullest as they discovered adventures on the farm by chasing lightening bugs, walking through the fresh plowed dirt, riding horses and fishing the creeks. Having walked in the farmer's wife's shoes during productive times and also during times of adversity and crop failures, the author understood her neighbor's pain and tears when their family homes and farm land went into foreclosure. She realized that if not for the grace of God, it could have been their home, their property. She recalls gazing at a field of corn stalks drying because of drought and praying for rain as she searched the sky for a tiny dark rain cloud. Her family endured the lean years along with the productive years. Starting their life together with nothing, God met their needs and later blessed their farming endeavors. They lived the American dream of owning a few acres in the country to farm and a new home to enjoy.

Download or read book Elgan and Grace written by L E Taylor and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twilight of his life, a son examines fragments of his family's moral trek through the played-out century. Historically authentic settings and mores rekindle the past: backwoods Kentucky... a booming young Detroit... anti-German hostility during The Great War... whiskey-running and speakeasies... twists of fortune after The Crash... the Machiavellian inner sanctums of the world's largest industry... the World War II American home front... sea-changes in society and in private lives that accompanied Post-War normalcy. Gradually, the saga coheres on the pathways of its two protagonists: Elgan, a complex, introspective Southern boy whose demons drive him to escape a numbing poverty of the coal fields for a new identity; Grace, the stalwart city girl, paternally orphaned at seven, a realist making the best of a damaged life with irony and industry. The pathways to faith are badly marked and studded with mines. The pilgrim, however brave, is often his own greatest obstacle. Elgan and Grace is one man's witness to what really happened. It is written with passion, literary care, and good humor, for these times and for the generations that come next....

Book excerpt: The perils on the trails West in the 1800's were many and often deadly. Besides the primitive living conditions, there were outlaws and racism to cope with along the way. Vigilante justice and racial prejudice were prevalent and practiced openly in many towns. Job Irvin, being part Cherokee, finds himself a victim of social injustice because of his Native American apearance. Speaking good English and carrying American citizenship papers does little to dampen the the prejudice and hatred directed at anyone of color on the trail West. The heroic rescue of Angie Cooper from a white slaver only complicates Job's trek West. A geniune romance develops between the two and Job realizes that Angie is to be the most important part of his future in Texas. He travels on alone to prepare a home for his future bride. Lifetime friendships are kindled on the wagon train that Job leads West to Texas. He learns that ignorance and apathy maintain the cruel mentality of prejudice and hate between the races of men. He decides to resist intolerance and speak out for equality of all men even though the consequences could be deadly. He tightens his cinch and extends his hand to others hoping his example will encourage others to pass it on!
