Book Synopsis Operation Pied Piper by : Niko Gärtner
Download or read book Operation Pied Piper written by Niko Gärtner and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When war came, the authorities in London and Berlin operated evacuation schemes that sent children into billets and camps in rural reception areas. The children’s exodus either happened orderly and followed years of planning and discussion amongst policy makers (London), or haphazardly following the sudden realization that the war would not be fought exclusively elsewhere (Berlin). As policies, the government evacuation schemes were bold, controversial and - considering their distinct political contexts - surprisingly similar; as were some of their consequences: the recipients did not accept them uncritically, the municipalities failed to evacuate the majority of children from the cities under attack, and private provision catered for a lot more children than the official schemes. This study of the British evacuation and Third Reich Kinderlandverschickung is an original and important contribution to the existing scholarship in two ways. First, it stays in the cities (rather than leaving with the evacuees towards the already well-researched evacuation experience) in order to show the scheme’ geneses, but also to appreciate issues related to their operational conduct in the face of stray children, closed schools and rebellious parents in town. Second, the study explores the evacuation schemes in the two warring capitals in comparative perspective, thus critically analyzing how policy was developed and executed in the face of shifting and differing political contexts and acute sociological challenges. This study traces local developments through sources, from the earliest plans contemplated in London during the 1930s to the collapse of the Third Reich and delayed return of Berlin children in 1946. It covers operational aspects and explores themes of agency, citizenship, childhood, schooling and the relationship between state and individual. The robust historical research, combined with a strong central narrative, should appeal not only to historians of education or military historians, but also to policy makers, educators, former evacuees and all readers with a private or professional interest in wartime childhoods and evacuations.

Download or read book The Pied Piper written by Viktor Dyk and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Pied Piper of Hamelin by : Russell Brand
Download or read book The Pied Piper of Hamelin written by Russell Brand and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this first book in Russell Brand’s Trickster Tales series, the famed comedian, actor, and bestselling author delivers a hilarious retelling of an old fairytale favorite that will appeal to adults and children alike. Once upon a time, long ago, in a time that seemed, to those present, exactly like now except their teeth weren’t so clean and more things were wooden, there was a town called Hamelin. The people of Hamelin were a pompous bunch who loved themselves and their town so much that if it were possible they would have spent all day zipped up in a space suit smelling their own farts. But space suits hadn’t been invented yet so they couldn’t. Then one day without warning a gang of rats bowled into the town and began causing a right rumpus… So begins Russell Brand’s wildly funny and surprisingly wise retelling of the classic tale The Pied Piper of Hamelin. Whether you’re a kid or a grown-up kid, you’ll be chuckling the whole way through this zany story that bypasses Brand’s more adult humor for the outrageous, the madcap, and the just plain silly. Maybe you’ve heard about the Pied Piper before, with his strange music and those pompous townspeople and pesky rats. Or maybe you haven’t. But one thing is for sure: you’ve never heard it quite like this.
Book Synopsis Latin Embedded Clauses by : Lieven Jozef Maria Danckaert
Download or read book Latin Embedded Clauses written by Lieven Jozef Maria Danckaert and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is one of the first studies that approaches Latin syntax from a formal perspective, combining detailed corpus-based description with formal theoretical analysis. The empirical focus is word order in embedded clauses, with special attention to clauses in which one or more constituents surface to the left of a subordinating conjunction. It is proposed that two such types of left peripheral fronting should be distinguished. The proposed analyses shed light not only on the clausal left periphery, but also on the overall structure of the Latin clause. The study is couched in the framework of generative grammar, but since a thorough introduction is provided, no special background in formal syntax is required. Major topics touched upon are word order, information structure, locality, and the syntax of pied-piping. The book covers both synchronic and diachronic topics of Latin syntax, and is of interest for classical philologists, historical linguists, and formal syntacticians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rentokil is the heart and soul of pest control. A brand synonymous with its field and familiar to all. Innovative, ground-breaking, highly professional; renowned for scientific rigour and go-the-extra-mile customer service. At last, here's a book that tells the full story of Rentokil's rise into an international powerhouse - and the pest problems it encountered and solved along the way. The Pest Detectives explores the origins of the brand, including the story of founder Professor Harold Maxwell-Lefroy, a brilliant yet tragic figure; Britain's first Imperial Entomologist and one of the foremost scientific minds of the early 20th century. It covers the personalities, big deals, landmark assignments and technical accomplishments that shaped the business. But as well as looking back, The Pest Detectives is very much a book about the business today: the culture, the strategy, the significant investment in innovation and training required to ensure Rentokil will still be at the forefront of the pest control market another 90 years from now. Through interviews with senior managers and talented 'pest detectives' on the ground, Rob Gray paints a picture of what the brand stands for and where it is going. A compelling picture of the greatest pest control business there has ever been.

He loved music, and everyone liked him. Laura felt truly blessed. Little did she know that, in five short years, all those dreams would turn to nightmares. It is still difficult for her to realize how much pain and suffering one man could cause to so many. The boys, the children, and Laura will never be the same. They are scarred forever. They deal with it. But they dont want anyone else to have to deal with it. That is why they have put their story in writing to warn you that there are pied pipers in this world. They are good at what they do. That is why they can fool so many trusting souls. The one thing Laura would change is that she would ask questions when things dont make sense. She advises you to ask questions. If you dont, she says that everyone loses.

Their presentation of the liturgical drama The Play of Daniel won them international fame. Under Greenberg's leadership, they recorded extensively and toured Europe, the Soviet Union, and Latin America. At the height of his and Pro Musica's success, Noah Greenberg died at the age of 47.
