Book Synopsis Wake Up, This Is Joburg by : Tanya Zack
Download or read book Wake Up, This Is Joburg written by Tanya Zack and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single image taken from a high-rise building in inner-city Johannesburg uncovers layers of history—from its premise and promise of gold to its current improvisations. It reveals the city as carcass and as crucible, where informal agents and processes spearhead its rapid reshaping and transformation. In Wake Up, This Is Joburg, writer Tanya Zack and photographer Mark Lewis offer a stunning portrait of Johannesburg and personal stories of some of the city’s ordinary, odd, and outrageous residents. Their photos and essays take readers into meat markets where butchers chop cow heads; the eclectic home of an outsider artist that features turrets and full of manikins; long-abandoned gold pits beneath the city, where people continue to mine informally; and lively markets, taxi depots, and residential high-rises. Sharing people’s private and work lives and the extraordinary spaces of the metropolis, Zack and Lewis show that Johannesburg’s urban transformation occurs not in a series of dramatic, wide-scale changes but in the everyday lives, actions, and dreams of individuals.

Book Synopsis A Place That Matters Yet by : Sara Byala
Download or read book A Place That Matters Yet written by Sara Byala and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Place That Matters Yet unearths the little-known story of Johannesburg’s MuseumAfrica, a South African history museum that embodies one of the most dynamic and fraught stories of colonialism and postcolonialism, its life spanning the eras before, during, and after apartheid. Sara Byala, in examining this story, sheds new light not only on racism and its institutionalization in South Africa but also on the problems facing any museum that is charged with navigating colonial history from a postcolonial perspective. Drawing on thirty years of personal letters and public writings by museum founder John Gubbins, Byala paints a picture of a uniquely progressive colonist, focusing on his philosophical notion of “three-dimensional thinking,” which aimed to transcend binaries and thus—quite explicitly—racism. Unfortunately, Gubbins died within weeks of the museum’s opening, and his hopes would go unrealized as the museum fell in line with emergent apartheid politics. Following the museum through this transformation and on to its 1994 reconfiguration as a post-apartheid institution, Byala showcases it as a rich—and problematic—archive of both material culture and the ideas that surround that culture, arguing for its continued importance in the establishment of a unified South Africa.

Book Synopsis The Shakespearean International Yearbook by : Graham Bradshaw
Download or read book The Shakespearean International Yearbook written by Graham Bradshaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eighth volume of The Shakespearean International Yearbook presents a special section on 'European Shakespeares', proceeding from the claim that Shakespeare's literary craft was not just native English or British, but was filtered and fashioned through a Renaissance awareness that needs to be recognized as European, and that has had effects and afterlives across the Continent. Guest editors Ton Hoenselaars and Clara Calvo have constructed this section to highlight both how the spread of 'Shakespeare' throughout Europe has brought together the energies of a wide variety of European cultures across several centuries, and how the inclusion of Shakespeare in European culture has been not only a European but also a world affair. The Shakespearean International Yearbook continues to provide an annual survey of important issues and developments in contemporary Shakespeare studies. Contributors to this issue come from the US and the UK, Spain, Switzerland and South Africa, Canada, The Netherlands, India, Portugal, Greece, France, and Hungary. In addition to the section on European Shakespeares, this volume includes essays on the genre of romance, issues of character, and other topics.
Download or read book Maye! Maye! written by Sipho Sithole and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-04 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an analysis of Johannesburg’s Kwa Mai Mai market, which was once known to regulars as 'a place of healing' and has experienced numerous changes of significant national transformation over time. It explores how the Kwa Mai Mai community, formerly a working class of migrants, reversed roles and took control of the means of production from the dominant class. Through their heightened cultural consciousness, this marginalised migrant community reimagined new economic realities and possibilities, forever distancing themselves from their painful, repressive past. This book chronicles the significance of cultural memory and discusses how it can be used as a weapon to not only resist subjugation but also to invoke entrepreneurial and creative spirit. Written out of the collective observations and interpretations of his ethnographic research spanning four years – Sipho Sithole’s ‘Maye Maye’ is dedicated to marginalised communities and those who, despite operating on the fringes of the economy, have sought to create their own fortune and destiny. Print edition not for sale in Sub Saharan Africa.
