Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psychology Industry Under a Microscope explores why psychology treatment efficacy rates are so poor, why psychological testing is unreliable, and why diagnosis is uncertain. He also explores the weaknesses inherent in 115 APA accredited doctoral programs and what changes may help improve the effectiveness of the psychology clinician. He introduces a cognitive/behavioral diagnostic system that is far more cohesive and sensible than the piecemeal and confusing system currently in place. This book introduces an easy to understand and innovative visual model that integrates all of clinical psychology and far surpasses any previous attempts at developing models. The author also challenges the recent resurgence of the disease model for diagnosis as well as the politics and economics that lie behind its current popularity. The reader may feel challenged by this book but will find it difficult to refute its content. This thought-provoking book is essential for any clinician or teacher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are we? What are we? How do we fit into the world? Or into the universe? These and other questions pertaining to ourselves and our environ ment are as compelling to us today as they were to our primitive ancestors. Throughout our history we have developed paradigms of thought that have attempted to answer these questions, each conceptual framework being par ticularly relevant to its age. We are, in the twentieth century, witnessing a complete reorganization of our thinking. We are now, with the aid of tech nology, able to bring together both ancient and new patterns of thought and to observe the emergence of a kaleidoscopic world view that is uniting the once dissonant theories of philosophy, religion, and science. This book sketches an historical picture of three world views that have shaped our ideas about ourselves. These conceptual formats that have so influenced us are not mutually exclusive and are present in all of us simulta neously, although to varying degrees depending upon our individual biases.

This biography exposes the hostile, at time libelious treatment of Rank in the standard histories of psychoanalysis and shows him to be a great analytic pioneer of this century. His influence was felt not only by mental health professionals, but also by such artists and writers as Anais Nin, Henry Miller, Paul Goodman and Max Lerner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a survey of some of the major areas of clinical psychology. No attempt has been made to include every area relevant to clinical psychology; the choices are selective but represent the wide range of areas touched by clinical psychologists. For some years I have felt the need for a book that provides students with more of a historical introduction and context from which to view current clinical psychology than is included in most textbooks. The issues and problems of clinical psychology have been with us since the beginning of time; however, most psychological literature is written with the bias that anything older than five or ten years is not relevant. Those who attempt to take a long-range view of clinical psychology are sometimes able to recall the early development of the field in the 1930s and 1940s. In this text, I asked the authors to begin with a brief survey of ancient and medieval history to set the stage for a discussion of current research and developments in the field. I hope that a presentation of this sort will provide the reader-whether advanced undergraduate, graduate, or professional-with a sense of perspective and context from which to view and understand clinical psychology.

Book excerpt: Here's a book on postmodernism that is written in plain English. Whereas many books on postmodernism are so obscure that the Flesch index of readability goes off the chart (see Fredric Jameson's books, for example), Shawver's book is of average readability. That's excellent for a book on postmodernism. Her reviewers, too, seem inevitably to comment on the book's clear style. In this readable book, Shawver tells us the story of how therapy became postmodern. When therapy was modern, she tells us, therapists did therapy within the guidelines of specific schools. The postmodern therapist, however, works like a fine chef, highly trained, but invariably changing the recipe and spicing the food with her own salsa. Nostalgic postmodernism is just an early guilt-ridden phase in this postmodernism, but the postmodern therapist soon morphs out of nostalgia and recognizes and appreciates her postmodern shift. This story of the postmodernization of the therapists is cast, in this book, in the context of the history of therapy, and, to some extent, in the context of the author's own experience of her own postmodernization.

Book excerpt: In A History of Modern Psychology in Context, the authors resist the traditional storylines of great achievements by eminent people, or schools of thought that rise and fall in the wake of scientific progress. Instead, psychology is portrayed as a network of scientific and professional practices embedded in specific contexts. The narrative is informed by three key concepts—indigenization, reflexivity, and social constructionism—and by the fascinating interplay between disciplinary Psychology and everyday psychology.

Now Psychology returns in a remarkable new edition that shows just how well-attuned the Hockenburys are to the needs of today’s students and instructors. Psychology began with a basic idea: combine scientific authority with a narrative that engages students and relates to their lives. From decades of experience teaching, the Hockenburys created a book filled with cutting-edge science and real-life stories that draw students of all kinds into the course.
