Book Synopsis Shapes of Imagination by : George Stiny
Download or read book Shapes of Imagination written by George Stiny and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual calculating in shape grammars aligns with art and design, bridging the gap between seeing (Coleridge's “imagination”) and combinatoric play (Coleridge's “fancy”). In Shapes of Imagination, George Stiny runs visual calculating in shape grammars through art and design—incorporating Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poetic imagination and Oscar Wilde's corollary to see things as they aren't. Many assume that calculating limits art and design to suit computers, but shape grammars rely on seeing to prove otherwise. Rules that change what they see extend calculating to overtake what computers can do, in logic and with data and learning. Shape grammars bridge the divide between seeing (Coleridge's “imagination, or esemplastic power”) and combinatoric play (Coleridge's “fancy”). Stiny shows that calculating without seeing excludes art and design. Seeing is key for calculating to augment creative activity with aesthetic insight and value. Shape grammars go by appearances, in a full-fledged aesthetic enterprise for the inconstant eye; they answer the question of what calculating would be like if Turing and von Neumann were artists instead of logicians. Art and design are calculating in all their splendid detail.
Book Synopsis Shape Grammars and their Uses by : GIPS
Download or read book Shape Grammars and their Uses written by GIPS and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shape grammars provide a means for the recursive specification of shapes. The formalism for shape grammars is designed to be easily usable and understandable by people and at the same time to be adaptable for use in computer programs. Shape grammars are similar to phrase structura grammars, which were developed by Chomsky [ 1956, 1957]. Where a phrase structura grammar is defined over an alphabet of symbols and generates a language of sequences of symbols, a shape grammar is defined over an alphabet of shapes and generates a language of shapes. This dissertation explores the uses of shape grammars. The dissertation is divided into three sections and an appendix. In the first section: Shape grammars are defined. Some simple examples are given for instructiva purposes. Shape grammars are used to generate a new class of reversible figures. Shape grammars are given for some well-known mathematical curves (the Snowflake curve, a variation of Peano's curve, and Hilbert's curve). To show the general computational power of shape grammars, a procedura that given any Turing machine constructs a shape grammar that simulates the operation of that Turing machine is presented. Related work on various formalisms for pictura grammars is described. A symbolic characterization of shape grammars is given that is useful for implementing shape grammars in computer programs.

Book Synopsis Studying Visual and Spatial Reasoning for Design Creativity by : John S. Gero
Download or read book Studying Visual and Spatial Reasoning for Design Creativity written by John S. Gero and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-09 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity and design creativity in particular are being recognized as playing an increasing role in the social and economic wellbeing of a society. As a consequence creativity is becoming a focus of research. However, much of this burgeoning research is distributed across multiple disciplines that normally do not intersect with each other and researchers in one discipline are often unaware of related research in another discipline. This volume brings together contributions from design science, computer science, cognitive science and neuroscience on studying visual and spatial reasoning applicable to design creativity. The book is the result of a unique NSF-funded workshop held in Aix-en-Provence, France. The aim of the workshop and the resulting volume was to allow researchers in disparate disciplines to be exposed to the other’s research, research methods and research results within the context of design creativity. Fifteen of the papers presented and discussed at the workshop are contained in this volume. The contributors come from Germany, Israel, Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, UK and USA, indicating the international spread of the research presented in this volume.
Book Synopsis Analysis, Conservation, and Restoration of Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage by : Inglese, Carlo
Download or read book Analysis, Conservation, and Restoration of Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage written by Inglese, Carlo and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communities have witnessed a fundamental shift in the ways they interact with heritage sites. Much of this change has been driven by the rapid democratization and widespread adoption of enabling technologies. As expediency is embraced in the collection and analysis of data, there may also be a certain amount of intimacy lost with both the tangible and intangible vestiges of the past. Analysis, Conservation, and Restoration of Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage is a collection of innovative research on the quantitative methods and digital workflows transforming cultural heritage. There is no contesting the value of advanced non-destructive diagnostic imaging techniques for the analysis of heritage structures and objects. Highlighting topics including 3D modeling, conservation, and digital surveying, this book is ideally designed for conservation and preservation specialists, archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, academicians, and students seeking current research on data-driven, evidence-based decision making to improve intervention outcomes.

Book Synopsis Hyperedge Replacement: Grammars and Languages by : Annegret Habel
Download or read book Hyperedge Replacement: Grammars and Languages written by Annegret Habel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-12-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of graph grammars is theoretically attractive and well motivated byvarious applications. More than 20 years ago, the concept of graph grammars was introduced by A. Rosenfeld as a formulation of some problems in pattern recognition and image processing, as well as by H.J. Schneider as a method for data type specification. Within graph-grammar theory one maydistinguish the set-theoretical approach, the algebraic approach, and the logical approach. These approaches differ in the method in which graph replacement is described. Specific approaches, node replacement and hyperedge replacement, concern the basic units of a hypergraph, nodes and hyperedges. This monograph is mainly concerned with the hyperedge-replacement approach. Hyperedge-replacement grammars are introduced as a device for generating hypergraph languages including graph languages and string languages. The concept combines a context-free rewriting with a comparatively large generative power. The volume includes a foreword by H. Ehrig.
Book Synopsis Perceptual Ecology by : Edward C. Carterette
Download or read book Perceptual Ecology written by Edward C. Carterette and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Perception, Volume X: Perceptual Ecology, deals with perceptual aspects of the study of interaction of persons with their environment. The book is organized into six parts. Part I examines an ecological approach to the perceptual systems and cultural differences in perception. Part II is devoted to impaired perception and action. It includes studies on perception by the deaf and blind, and outlines the intellectual principles necessary for understanding sensory aids. Part III on aesthetics covers central problem of aesthetic theories and the generation and measurement of aesthetic forms. Part IV on architecture, music, art, and cinema discusses the perceptual aspects of architecture; the psychology of music; and the perception of art and motion pictures. Part V deals with the role of olfactory hedonics in perfumery and the assessment and abatement of noxious odors; and food habits, gastronomy, and analysis of flavors and foods. Part VI focuses on parapsychology. It reviews experimental evidence on telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and psychokinesis in order to assess the status of parapsychology and show why it is paradoxy, outside of accepted opinion, after some 100 years of psychic research.
