Book excerpt: In conjunction with the exhibition Alibis: Sigmar Polke, this unique evening brings together rarely seen films by Sigmar Polke and his collaborations with other filmmakers. Polke's densely layered and open ended films reflect the flood of observations that shaped his life and work. Georg and Anna Polke, Sigmar's children, have restored over two decades worth of film material, much of which was never publicly screened during Polke's lifetime. The rare films in this screening span the artist's life and work providing an insight into his studio, his daily life and family as well as his international travel and interest in other cultures. The films will be introduced by special guests from Polke's family who will discuss his relationship to film and Christof Kohlhöfer will also discuss his collaboration with Polke. -- https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/sigmar-polke-films.

Book Synopsis American People, Black Light by : Faith Ringgold
Download or read book American People, Black Light written by Faith Ringgold and published by Neuberger Museum of Art. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith Ringgold (born 1930) is famed today as the progenitor of the African-American story-quilt revival of the late 1970s, but her story begins much earlier, with her American People Series of 1963. These once influential paintings, and the many political posters and murals she created throughout the 1960s, have largely disappeared from view, being routinely omitted from art historical discourse over the past 40 years. American People, Black Light is the first examination of Ringgold's earliest radical and pioneering explorations of race, gender and class. Undertaken to address the social upheavals of the 1960s, these are the works through which Ringgold found her political voice. American People, Black Light offers not only clear insight into a critical moment in American history, but also a clear account of what it meant to be an African American woman making her way as an artist at that time.

Book Synopsis Coca-Cola Socialism by : Radina Vucetic
Download or read book Coca-Cola Socialism written by Radina Vucetic and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the process of Americanization of Yugoslav culture and everyday life during the sixties. After having fallen out of the Eastern bloc, Tito turned to American backing. In political spheres distance was carefully guarded, yet in the realms of culture and consumption the Yugoslav regime was definitely much more receptive. For Titoist Yugoslavia this tactic turned out to be rewarding. It stabilised the regime internally and gave it an image of openness in foreign policy. The book addresses the link between cultural diplomacy, culture, consumer society and politics. The main argument is that both culture and everyday life modelled on the American way were a major source of legitimacy for the Yugoslav Communist Party, and a powerful weapon for both USA and Yugoslavia in the Cold War battle for hearts and minds. Vucetic explores how the Party used American culture in order to promote its own values and how life in this socialist and capitalist hybrid system looked like for ordinary people, living in a country with communist ideology wrapped in capitalist form. The book offers a careful reevaluation of the limits of appropriating the American dream. The analysis raises doubts toward both the uncritical celebration of Yugoslavia's openness and the exaggerated picture of its authoritarianism.
