Die räumliche und personelle Ver knüpfung von Geographie und Ozeanographie am ehemaligen Institut für Meeres kunde in Berlin ist längst Wissenschafts geschichte. Mit zunehmender Spezialisierung auf einerseits maritime und andererseits kontinentale Aufgabenfelder mußte die einst enge und fruchtbare Verbindung fast zwangsläufig auseinanderfallen. Mit wenigen Ausnahmen hat die Geographie im deutschen Sprachraum in den letzten Jahrzehnten Meere und Küsten weitgehend unbeachtet gelassen. Der 1964 von PAFFEN unternommene Vorstoß, die Notwendigkeit einer "Geogra phie der Meere" wieder in das Bewußtsein der deutschen Geographie zu rücken, fand zwar Anerkennung, doch realisiert wurden die bedenkenswerten Vorstellungen kaum. Gerade 2-2,5 % der geographischen Publikationen der letzten Jahre befassen sich mit Meeren und Küsten. An kaum einer unserer zahlreichen Hochschulen wird die ser bedeutende Raum in der Lehre behandelt. Dieser kleine Band soll dabei helfen, das Defizit ein wenig abzubauen. Daher werden die wesentlichen Fakten aus dem Gebiet der "Physischen Geographie der Meere und Küsten" in möglichst verständlicher, allerdings sehr komprimierter Form dargestellt und mit Hilfe von Tabellen und Figuren verdeutlicht. Auf die Aus breitung eigener Standpunkte ist weitgehend verzichtet worden, um die Darstellung nicht mit noch in der Diskussion befindlichen Sachverhalten zu überfrachten. Das unumgängliche vertiefte Studium soll durch die Nennung einer größeren Zahl von Quellen erleichtert werden. Allerdings stammen die meisten nicht aus deutscherFeder.

Die Arbeit hat die typischen Formen und Formungsprozesse der mediterranen Küsten zum Schwerpunkt. Die meisten Formen, die wir an den Küsten des Mittelmeergebietes vorfinden, lassen sich gleichwohl auch außerhalb des mediterranen Küstengebietes antreffen. Beachrocks und Äolianite sind zahlreich an vielen Küsten im Mittelmeer verstreut. Aber auch tsunamigene Ablagerungen sind - vor allem im östlichen Mittelmeergebiet - ein fester Bestandteil der typischen Formen des Mittelmeers und finden somit auch in dieser Arbeit Berücksichtigung. Verschiedene Akkumulationsformen gehören ebenso zu den Erscheinungen mediterraner Küstenformation. Aber vor allem sind es die biogenen Formationen, geschaffen durch Bioerosion und Biokonstruktion, welche die in ihrer Art wahrscheinlich typischsten Erscheinungsformen im Mittelmeergebiet darstellen. Dies führt uns direkt zum Problem der Zonalität von Küstenformen und Küstenformungsprozessen im Mittelmeergebiet; denn die biogenen Erscheinungen der Mittelmeerküste sind wohl die besten Indikatoren zur Bestimmung der Zonalität im Mittelmeergebiet. Vorher erfahren wir noch etwas über die Definition des Begriffs Küste, die Lage und Ausdehnung und die Küstenklassifikation. Außerdem werden wir merken, dass es noch viele Kontroversen in der Küstenmorphologie gibt (vgl. Kapitel 2.4.1.3 und 2.4.1.4). Eine der Ursachen ist sicherlich bedingt durch die Tatsache, dass die Küste der geomorphologischen Aspekte noch immer ein äußerst vernachlässigtes Forschungsgebiet ist (im Vergleich zur Geomorphologie des Festlandes), wenn auch sich in den letzten Jahren positive Veränderungen abgespielt haben.
