Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and Pathology of the Cerebrospinal Fluid The object of this book is to present some of the fascinating physiological problems connected with the cerebrospinal fluid, and to show how they are related to the pathological problems which more directly concern the clinician. Not until the method of production and absorption of the fluid is completely understood can there be any hope of solving the age-long problem of the treatment of hydrocephalus; not until the details of the circulation of the fluid have been mastered, can intraspinal injections of drugs and sera be expected to fulfill the hopes of the therapeutist. Any means which will facilitate the difficult diagnosis of diseases of the central nervous system is of value, and the cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes its deepest recesses and washes the very nerve cells and fibers themselves, is in truth a mirror which reflects every change taking place in that system. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries the great minds of medical science puzzled over the importance of the cerebrospinal fluid. As far back as Hippocrates, it was thought that this "phlegm" that flooded the intracranial contents had pathological significance. However, not until the late 1800s, when Quincke introduced and popularized lumbar puncture, did physicians take an interest in the study of this fluid in relation to clinical illness. Since then a variety of techniques for obtaining cerebrospinal fluid from various sites have developed, and the relationship of cerebrospinal fluid to a variety of disease processes has received considerable study. In this volume, we have attempted to assemble reviews of some of these important developments during the past century. Chapter 1 contains a historical review of key investigations that helped shape our concepts of cerebrospinal fluid from the earliest recorded description by the author of the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus in the seventeenth century B. C. to contemporaries such as Kabat, Glusman, and Knaub, who introduced quantitative determinations of cerebrospinal fluid gamma globulin levels. In Chapter 2 there is a description of our current understanding of the anatomical compartment for the cerebrospinal fluid and the physiology of its formation, circulation, and absorption. Dr. Richard Leech in Chapter 3 contributes a comprehensive description of the disorders associated with excessive quanti ties of cerebrospinal fluid-commonly referred to as hydrocephalus. A variety of techniques for properly collecting and evaluating cerebrospinal fluid are detailed in Chapter 4.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology and Pathology of the Cerebral Circulation: An Experimental Research In the following pages will be found the substance of three Lectures which I delivered as Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in February last. I have largely been enabled to carry out the researches of the past five years therein detailed, through the munificence of the Worshipful Company of Grocers. This volume contains a report of the work done by me as their Research Scholar. In writinof some of the sections of this work I have drawn on papers previously published by me in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, the Journal of Physiology, and the British Medical Journal; other sections, such as those on the Cerebral Pulsation, the Cerebro-spinal Fluid, Cerebral Anaemia, and Cerebral Compression are new, and contain an account of experiments hitherto unpublished. I have been partly supplied with the means of research by grants from the Royal Society Government Grant, and the British Medical Association; and I owe a debt of gratitude to Professor Burdon Sanderson, Professor Schafer and the Authorities of the London Hospital Medical College, whose laboratories and laboratory appliances have been placed at my disposal. Book excerpt: Cerebrospinal Fluid and Arachnoid Space Volume 2: Pathology and Disorders is the first book devoted to the comprehensive clinical anatomy of the cerebrospinal fluid for neurosurgeons, neurologists, and neuroscientists. Knowledge of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the subarachnoid space is necessary for almost all fields of medicine. The book covers a wide swath of topics related to CSF with a focus on topics relevant to neuroscience specialists including researchers, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroradiologists. Topics span from neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, CSF in different disease states and more. Various fresh and fixed cadaveric photographs helps readers obtain a better understanding of anatomy and complications related to CSF. - First comprehensive book devoted to clinical anatomy of cerebrospinal fluid and subarachnoid space - Edited by neuro-anatomists and neurosurgeons, giving it a multimodal perspective - Nerves and vessels color-coded to differentiate from other tissues

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cerebrospinal Fluid in Health and in Disease The author was kind enough to ask me if I would look over his manuscript and then tell him whether it seemed to me worthy of publication. Later, when I told him that in my opinion lie had produced a valuable little book, he requested me to state the reasons for this favorable opinion in the form of a foreword. This I can do in a few brief statements. In the first place, on reading the manuscript, I soon became aware that the author had come to his task with not only a large experience behind him in the examination by various methods of the cerebrospinal fluid as an aid in diagnosis, but with a highly creditable record in the scientific study of this fluid as well. Evidently he had been drawn to his work on the cerebrospinal fluid because of its attractiveness as a field of research, as well as on account of its importance in diagnosis. It is to this happy combination of true philosophic interest and first-hand practical knowledge on the part of the author that the book owes its chief merit, namely, thoroughness and freshness in the parts dealing with fundamental problems, as well as in those dealing with practical matters. In the second place there could be no doubt in regard to the timeliness of a work of this kind. Indeed it seemed to me that a definite want would he supplied; for, in spite of an increasing importance in medicine, there was as yet no comprehensive book 011 all phases of the cerebrospinal fluid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental and Clinical Researches on the Physiology and Pathology of the Spinal Cord, and Some Other Parts of the Nervous Centres Case II. - A young Pole, after a nervous fever, became paralyzed of sensibility and movement in the left side. Anaesthesia in the right side of the face. Coma, - death. Inspection The right side of the Pons is the double of its normal size it extends in front and behind, and there it passes under the right olive, compressing the neighboring parts of the encephalon and the roots of the nerves. The cause of the enlargement of the right side of the Pons was a very large clot of blood. According to Romberg, a case very much like this one is recorded by Dr R. Bright (reports of Med. Cases.
