Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing has been a characteristic behaviour of humanity across several millennia. Chorus America (2009) estimated that 42.6 million adults and children regularly sing in one of 270,000 choruses in the US, representing more than 1:5 households. Similarly, recent European-based data suggest that more than 37 million adults take part in group singing. The Oxford Handbook of Singing is a landmark text on this topic. It is a comprehensive resource for anyone who wishes to know more about the pluralistic nature of singing. In part, the narrative adopts a lifespan approach, pre-cradle to senescence, to illustrate that singing is a commonplace behaviour which is an essential characteristic of our humanity. In the overall design of the Handbook, the chapter contents have been clustered into eight main sections, embracing fifty-three chapters by seventy-two authors, drawn from across the world, with each chapter illustrating and illuminating a particular aspect of singing. Offering a multi-disciplinary perspective embracing the arts and humanities, physical, social and clinical sciences, the book will be valuable for a broad audience within those fields.

As this text shows, phonetographic analysis of the speaking and singing voice has been proven to be of great help for students and teachers of drama and singing education. The book presents an age-related and gender-specific pattern card of the human voice, based on a step-by-step analysis of a database of more than 1000 phonetograms. This pattern card enables a basic voice classification of any subject, providing a guideline with useful information for voice education and voice therapy, as demonstrated by a selection of 152 figures and 72 tables, including some exceptional longitudinal phonetograms of actors and singers across a wide age range.

Book excerpt: This innovative manual provides 148 Figures and Tables, deducted from a recently enlarged database of more than 1.000 phonetograms (Voice Range Profiles) from professional voice users (singers, actors, and dancers) of both genders, of ages between 8 and 88 years. The E.T.M. (Eclectic Therapy Method) offers the possibility to objectively evaluate, in real time, the capacities of a given voice, as expressed by the different parameters for each tone of the vocal range, and to expand them to their maximum potentiality, considering the general rules of vocal hygiene. This way, the interested reader can compare their own results of voice analysis, voice education or voice therapy with the exceptional data provided in this study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristic voice quality of a speaker conveys to listeners a wealth of information about his physical, psychological and social attributes. For this reason, voice quality is of interest to a wide range of disciplines, including linguistics, phonetics and speech science, speech pathology, sociology, psychology, medicine, and communication engineering. Literature on voice quality is, consequently, scattered through a correspondingly wide range of publications. While this bibliography is unlikely to be exhaustive, it aims to be comprehensive. Exceptions to this are purely medical literature and literature on speech pathology; also, although a number of different languages are represented, works in English received the principal coverage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pitch (i.e., fundamental frequency FO and fundamental period TO) occupies a key position in the acoustic speech signal. The prosodic information of an utterance is predominantly determined by this parameter. The ear is more sensitive to changes of fundamental frequency than to changes of other speech signal parameters by an order of magnitude. The quality of vocoded speech is essentially influenced by the quality and faultlessness of the pitch measure ment. Hence the importance of this parameter necessitates using good and reliable measurement methods. At first glance the task looks simple: one just has to detect the funda mental frequency or period of a quasi-periodic signal. For a number of reasons, however, the task of pitch determination has to be counted among the most difficult problems in speech analysis. 1) In principle, speech is a nonstationary process; the momentary position of the vocal tract may change abruptly at any time. This leads to drastic variations in the temporal structure of the signal, even between subsequent pitch periods, and assuming a quasi-periodic signal is often far from realistic. 2) Due to the flexibility of the human vocal tract and the wide variety of voices, there exist a multitude of possible temporal structures. Narrow-band formants at low harmonics (especially at the second or third harmonic) are an additional source of difficulty. 3) For an arbitrary speech signal uttered by an unknown speaker, the fundamental frequency can vary over a range of almost four octaves (50 to 800 Hz).
