This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The criterion of true beauty' , wrote Fulke Greville, 1st Baron of Burke, 'is that it increases on examination; if false, that it lessens. There is therefore something in true beauty that corresponds with right reason, and it is not the mere creation of fantasy.' The authors of this compact volume have increased the beauty of an area that is commonly and rightly ac knowledged to be one of the loveliest parts of the Great Lakes. They have done this by integrating the historical, industrial, and cultural influences on 'Lake Manitoulin' in sixteen manuscripts. It is enigmatic that Lake Huron, the second of the Great Lakes to be discovered by European explorers, has been the last to be adequately described Iimnologicaliy. As recently as 1966, for example, Alfred M. Beeton wrote in Limnology in North America: ' ... even a list of the more common species comprising the plankton of Lake Huron could be an original contribution to scientific literature.' Comparable statements could have been made for sediments, benthos, and water chemistry. This volume reflects a change of course and Georgian Bay and the North Channel of Lake Huron are now on the scientific map. Science is 'right reason'. Its application to Georgian Bay and the North Channel is a welcome and timely addition for the renewal of public, political, and scientific interest in the conservation of the Great Lakes.

Book Synopsis Coarse-Grained Deltas by : Albina Colella
Download or read book Coarse-Grained Deltas written by Albina Colella and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Publication contains most of the contributions presented at the 1st International Workshop on Fan Deltas (1988) but also contains additional papers which make this particular volume a very well-rounded reference source for the advanced undergraduate/graduate student and the professional earth scientist concerned with sedimentology and petroleum geology. The papers describe the sedimentology and tectonic setting of this important depositional environment. Course-grained deltas, ranging from sand to gravelly, are fully covered and the main focus is on steep-face systems whose steep subaqueous slopes are dominated by high-energy processes. The volume includes case histories from around the world and throughout the book there is emphasis on the subaqueous realm of the delta face, its sedimentary processes and facies associations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To invest in vice can be a sound financial decision, but despite the lure of healthy profits, individuals and mutual funds have been reluctant to invest in this type of stock. After all, who would take pride in supporting the tobacco industry, knowing it sells a deadly product? And what social responsibilities do investors bear with respect to compulsive gamblers who have lost so much money that suicide becomes an attractive option? Canada the Good considers more than five hundred years of debates and regulation that have conditioned Canadians’ attitudes towards certain vices. Early European settlers implemented a Christian moral order that regulated sexual behaviour, gambling, and drinking. Later, some transgressions were diagnosed as health issues that required treatment. Those who refused the label of illness argued that behaviours formerly deemed as vices were within the range of normal human behaviour. This historical synthesis demonstrates how moral regulation has changed over time, how it has shaped Canadians’ lives, why some debates have almost disappeared and others persist, and why some individuals and groups have felt empowered to tackle collective social issues. Against the background of the evolution of the state, the enlargement of the body politic, and mounting forays into court activism, the author illustrates the complexity over time of various forms of social regulation and the control of vice.

Book Synopsis Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape by : Ajith H. Perera
Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.
