Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physics of the Ether Surely, if a thing be stated to be practicable, the least to be required is that some idea should be formed of the means by which the result or mechanical end is to be attained, and this perception of the means constitutes the sole ground to support the assumption as to practicability. If, on the other hand, a thing be assumed to be practicable without any perception of the means, then the assumption falls away of itself from want of ground to support it. Download or read book The Lightness of Being written by Frank Wilczek and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Nobel-prize winning physicist takes on the essential question: what are we made of? Our understanding of nature's deepest reality has changed radically, but almost without our noticing, over the past twenty-five years. Transcending the clash of older ideas about matter and space, acclaimed physicist Frank Wilczek explains a remarkable new discovery: matter is built from almost weightless units, and pure energy is the ultimate source of mass. He calls it "The Lightness of Being." Space is no mere container, empty and passive. It is a dynamic Grid-a modern ether- and its spontaneous activity creates and destroys particles. This new understanding of mass explains the puzzling feebleness of gravity, and a gorgeous unification of all the forces comes sharply into focus. The Lightness of Being is the first book to explore the implications of these revolutionary ideas about mass, energy, and the nature of "empty space." In it, Wilczek masterfully presents new perspectives on our incredible universe and envisions a new golden age of fundamental physics.

Book Synopsis Matter, Ether, and Motion by : A. E. Dolbear
Download or read book Matter, Ether, and Motion written by A. E. Dolbear and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-08 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matter, Ether, and Motion: The Factors and Relations of Physical Science As the work is a treatise on Physics, there is no special reason for going beyond it; but if this presenta tion of the subject is any approach to the truth, there is an important conclusion to be drawn from it. If the ether be the homogeneous and uniform medium it is believed with reason to be, then, in the absence of what we call matter, no physical change which we call a phenomenon could possibly arise in it for every such phenomenon is a product, and in the absence of one of the essential factors, viz., matter, it could not be. If matter itself be a form of motion of the ether, the ether must have existed prior to matter; also, if the atom be a form of energy, then must energy have existed before matter existed. Hence there must have been some other agency radically different from any physical energy we know, and independent of everything we know, which was capable of producing orderly physical phenomena, by acting upon the ether; for a homogene ous medium could not originate it. Some philosophers call this antecedent power The Unknowable others call it God. If energy as we know it implies antecedent energy as we do not know it, so, likewise, mind as we know it implies antecedent mind under totally different conditions from those in which we find it embodied. Book Synopsis Classical ether theory explains the Fizeau experiment by : Emil Falkner

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Physics - Theoretical Physics, , language: English, abstract: Regardless of the fact that A. Michelson and E. Morley explained the Fizeau Experiment in a very simple classical way, this experiment is sometimes used to demonstrate the validity of special theory of relativity[4]. Because some other experiments show that Doppler effect, which is generated within moving Medium, influence the average speed of light, it could be rather interpreted as an argument against special theory of relativity.
