Book excerpt: Electron cyclotron current drive is a key option for driving current off-axis in a tokamak, as needed for example for current profile control or for suppression of neoclassical tearing modes. Experiments in DIII-D at low beta have shown that the partial cancellation of the Fisch-Boozer co-current by the Ohkawa counter-current can cause strong deterioration of the current drive efficiency at larger minor radius. However, more recent experiments at higher power have shown that the loss in efficiency can be mostly recovered if the target plasma has higher electron beta, [beta]{sub e}. The improvement in efficiency with beta can be understood from a theoretical viewpoint by applying the Fokker-Planck code CQL3D, which shows excellent agreement with experiment over a wide range of parameters, thereby validating the code as an effective means of predicting the ECCD.

Book excerpt: Electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) experiments on the DIII-D tokamak are solidifying the physics basis for localized, off-axis current drive, the goal being to validate a predictive model for ECCD. The ECCD profiles are determined from the magnetic field pitch angles measured by motional Stark effect (MSE) polarimetry. The measured ECCD switches from the co to the counter direction as the toroidal injection angle is varied with a profile width that is in accordance with ray tracing calculations. Tests of electron trapping in low beta plasmas show that the ECCD efficiency decreases rapidly as the deposition is moved off-axis and towards the outboard side of the plasma, but the detrimental effects of electron trapping on the current drive are greatly reduced in high beta plasmas. Overall, the measured ECCD is in good agreement with theoretical calculations using a quasilinear Fokker-Planck code over a wide range of injection angles and plasma parameters.

Book excerpt: In high temperature tokamak confined plasmas, electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) entails a competition between current drive by the Ohkawa mechanism (OKM) and the Fisch-Boozer mechanism (FBM). We have shown recently that the OKM of current drive (OKCD) is more suitable for effectively generating significant current at positions off the magnetic axis, on the outboard low field side (LFS), of interest to various advanced tokamak operation scenarios, and STs, requiring current profile control. At such positions the bootstrap current (BC) is also appreciable and OKCD must be evaluated self-consistently in the presence of BC; we present results from such a self-consistent formulation and evaluate the synergism between OKCD and BC.

The experimental ECCD is compared to both the linear theory (Toray-GA) as well as a quasilinear Fokker-Planck model (CQL3D). The experimental ECCD is found to be in better agreement with the more complete Fokker-Planck calculation, especially for cases of high rf power density and/or loop voltage.

Strong single pass absorption makes heating to ignition particularly simple. The optimized EC current drive (ECCD) efficiency ({l_angle}n{r_angle}IR/P) shows a linear temperature scaling at temperatures up to (approximately) 15 keV. For temperatures above 30 keV, the efficiency saturates at approximately 0.3·102° A/(m2W) for a frequency of 220 GHz in an ITER target plasma with toroidal field of 6 T, due primarily to harmonic overlap [G.R. Smith et al., Phys. Fluids 30 3633 (1987)] and to a lesser extent due to limitations arising from relativistic effects [N.J. Fisch, Phys. Rev. A 24 3245 (1981)]. The same efficiency can also be obtained at 170 GHz for the same plasma equilibrium except that the magnetic field is reduced to (170/220) x 6 T = 4.6 T. The ECCD efficiencies are obtained with the comprehensive 3D, bounce-averaged Fokker-Planck CQL3D codes [R.W. Harvey and M.G. McCoy, Proc. IAEA TCM/Advances in Simulation and Modeling in Thermonuclear Plasmas 1992, Montreal], and BANDIT3D [M.R. O'Brien, M. Cox, C.D. Warrick, and F.S. Zaitsev, ibid.].
