Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a complete update of the classic 1981 FAST BREEDER REACTORS textbook authored by Alan E. Waltar and Albert B. Reynolds, which , along with the Russian translation, served as a major reference book for fast reactors systems. Major updates include transmutation physics (a key technology to substantially ameliorate issues associated with the storage of high-level nuclear waste ), advances in fuels and materials technology (including metal fuels and cladding materials capable of high-temperature and high burnup), and new approaches to reactor safety (including passive safety technology), New chapters on gas-cooled and lead-cooled fast spectrum reactors are also included. Key international experts contributing to the text include Chaim Braun, (Stanford University) Ronald Omberg, (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Massimo Salvatores (CEA, France), Baldev Raj, (Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research, India) , John Sackett (Argonne National Laboratory), Kevan Weaver, (TerraPower Corporation) ,James Seinicki(Argonne National Laboratory). Russell Stachowski (General Electric), Toshikazu Takeda (University of Fukui, Japan), and Yoshitaka Chikazawa (Japan Atomic Energy Agency).

Book excerpt: Advanced Reactors: Physics, Design and Economics contains the proceedings of the International Conference held at Atlanta, Georgia on September 8-11, 1974. Organized according to the sessions of the conference, this book first describes the national programs for the development of advanced reactors. Subsequent sessions centers on economics of advanced reactors; developments in reactor theory; advanced reactor experiments and analysis; cross section data and calculational methods. The last three sessions focus on sensitivity analysis of integral reactor parameters; problems in the design of advanced reactors; and the design and operational experience for advanced reactors.

Book excerpt: The present volume has been prepared for persons with some knowledge of the physics of nuclear reactors. It is intended to make available the accumulated physics experience of the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in its work on intermediate spectrum reactors. Only those portions have been selected which were deemed to be most useful and significant to other physicists concerned with the problems of reactor design. The volume is divided into four parts which are more or less independent of one another. Part 1 (Chaps. 2--9), Investigation of Reactor Characteristics by Critical Assemblies, reflects the importance of the properties of critical assemblies and of the techniques for obtaining experimental information about such assemblies. Part 2 (Chaps. 10--20), Reactivity Effects Associated with Reactor Operation, details the use of both critical assemblies and reactor theory to make and test predictions of the manner in which the reactivity of an intermediate power reactor will vary during operation. Part 3 (Chaps. 21--26), Heat Generation and Nuclear Materials Problems, considers how reactor heat generation is spread out in space and time, and what nuclear effects result from the presence of beryllium or sodium in the reactor. Part 4 (Chaps. 27--38), Reactor Kinetics and Temperature Coefficients, relates to the transient or near-transient behavior of intermediate reactors.

Book excerpt: Of all subjects the physics, engineering and technology of nuclear reactors is perhaps one of the most esoteric yet it plays a highly important role in most of our lives; and soon, without doubt, will become even more so. Because it is generally unknown means that it is often feared but it shouldn't be. Books that broach this subject often do so from either a most basic approach, leaving the enquiring mind wanting for more, or more often are designed specifically for students of nuclear engineering to a very advanced level and are therefore far too advanced for the level of interest of the non-nuclear student or first/second year nuclear undergraduate and often assume that the reader is already in possession of high level mathematics. This book sets out, at fast pace, to ease the reader into this subject at an elementary, further elementary and intermediate level but also addresses any theory from basic first principles that is often missing in other literature. Herein we explain this subject without missing out the necessary concomitant underlying concepts without which the student will remain forever wondering how. This book is also designed to suit, and is navigable at, all aspirational levels of study from basic technology to advanced physics. Within we shall discuss: nuclear & atomic physics and technology, nuclear fission, fusion, radiation, shielding and instrumentation, analysis of reactor core design geometries, critical mass calculations and fuel pitch optimization, fuel poisoning, reactor stability, reactor types and characteristics, nuclear accidents and safety, fuel manufacture, chemistry and enrichment, metallurgy of reactor materials, fuel loading and burn-up calculations. Further to this, substantial other material has been added given the need for wider engineering perspectives of power plant design, thermodynamics, thermal-hydraulics, engineering control theory and in introducing useful topics, including theory and techniques in linear analysis, for bridging into advanced reactor theory. This book is a highly illustrated, concise and comprehensive, practical and theoretical introduction to this high utility subject and also serves beyond its apparent cognitive application. It is designed to provide more than that of a textbook at the elementary/further elementary/intermediate level. If you are a student of physics, mechanical, chemical, electrical or environmental engineering, mathematics or chemistry, are a naval officer or just academically or curiously minded who seeks a better understanding of this mysterious subject or if you are a first/second year nuclear engineering student then this book will get you straight in and help you succeed in understanding the fascinating world of nuclear energy.
