Book excerpt: The fiber-initiated High-Density Z-Pinch (HDZP) is a novel concept in which fusion plasma could be produced by applying 2 MV along a thin filament of frozen deuterium, 20-30 .mu.m in diameter, 5-10 cm long. The megamp-range currents that result would ohmically heat the fiber to fusion temperatures in 100 ns while maintaining nearly constant radius. The plasma pressure would be held stably by the self-magnetic field for many radial sound transit times during the current-rise phase while, in the case of D-T, a significant fraction of the fiber undergoes thermonuclear fusion. This paper presents results of Los Alamos HDZP studies. Existing and new experiments are described. A succession of theoretical studies, including 1D self-similar and numerical studies of the hot plasma phase, 1D and 2D numerical studies of the cold startup phase, and 3D numerical studies of stability in the hot regime, are then presented. 9 refs., 4 figs.

Such collisions may produce a population inversion which could result in stimulated emission in the x-ray regime.

Book excerpt: Self-organization can be envisioned as a process of formation of recognizable patterns upon the injection of energy into and the efficient expulsion of energy from a given physical system. A Z-pinch is an electric discharge between two terminals within a given gas environment, providing the context for the possible formation of geometrical structures of the ionized gas with free electrons: a plasma. These plasma structures may last longer in time due to the efficient expulsion of entropy, and the higher gain in energy. Sustained existence of a z-pinch plasma may serve for the purposes of generation of high-rate, high-density neutron fluxes, which in turn may be used for neutron imaging, material studies and material treatment, like sputtering, among other possible uses. In this work it has been shown evidence for the correlation between the highest input of energy and the highest output of entropy, with the spontaneous formation of plasma structures.

The effects of instability growth in the plasma during the implosion, its reassembly on a central cushion, and the plasma interactions with shaped electrodes are considered.

At the same time, the energy shortage on the one hand and the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn on the other have increased the national awareness of the important applications of plasma physics to energy production and to the understanding of our space environment. In magnetic confinement fusion, this period has seen the attainment 13 of a Lawson number nTE of 2 x 10 cm -3 sec in the Alcator tokamaks at MIT; neutral-beam heating of the PL T tokamak at Princeton to KTi = 6. 5 keV; increase of average ß to 3%-5% in tokamaks at Oak Ridge and General Atomic; and the stabilization of mirror-confined plasmas at Livermore, together with injection of ion current to near field-reversal conditions in the 2XIIß device. Invention of the tandem mirror has given magnetic confinement a new and exciting dimension. New ideas have emerged, such as the compact torus, surface-field devices, and the EßT mirror-torus hybrid, and some old ideas, such as the stellarator and the reversed-field pinch, have been revived. Radiofrequency heat ing has become a new star with its promise of dc current drive. Perhaps most importantly, great progress has been made in the understanding of the MHD behavior of toroidal plasmas: tearing modes, magnetic Vll Vlll islands, and disruptions.
