Book excerpt: Point defects in semiconductors have been and will continue to be relevant for applications. Shallow defects realize transistors, which power the modern age of information, and in the not-too-distant future, deep-level defects could provide the foundation for a revolution in quantum information processing. Deep-level defects (in particular color centers) are also of interest for other applications such as a single photon emitter, especially one that emits at 1550 nm, which is the optimal frequency for long-range communication via fiber optics. First-principle calculations can predict the energies and optical properties of point defects. I performed extensive convergence tests for magneto-optical properties, such as zero phonon lines, hyperfine coupling parameters, and zero-field splitting for the four different configurations of the divacancy in 4H-SiC. Comparing the converged results with experimental measurements, a clear identification of the different configurations was made. With this approach, I also identified all configurations for the silicon vacancy in 4H-SiC as well as the divacancy and silicon vacancy in 6H-SiC. The same method was further used to identify two additional configurations belonging to the divacancy present in a 3C stacking fault inclusion in 4H-SiC. I extended the calculated properties to include the transition dipole moment which provides the polarization, intensity, and lifetime of the zero phonon lines. When calculating the transition dipole moment, I show that it is crucial to include the self-consistent change of the electronic orbitals in the excited state due to the geometry relaxation. I tested the method on the divacancy in 4H-SiC, further strengthening the previous identification and providing accurate photoluminescence intensities and lifetimes. Finding stable point defects with the right properties for a given application is a challenging task. Due to the vast number of possible point defects present in bulk semiconductor materials, I designed and implemented a collection of automatic workflows to systematically investigate any point defects. This collection is called ADAQ (Automatic Defect Analysis and Qualification) and automates every step of the theoretical process, from creating defects to predicting their properties. Using ADAQ, I screened about 8000 intrinsic point defect clusters in 4H-SiC. This thesis presents an overview of the formation energy and the most relevant optical properties for these single and double point defects. These results show great promise for finding new color centers suitable for various quantum applications.

Book excerpt: The Science of Color focuses on the principles and observations that are foundations of modern color science. Written for a general scientific audience, the book broadly covers essential topics in the interdisciplinary field of color, drawing from physics, physiology and psychology. This book comprises eight chapters and begins by tracing scientific thinking about color since the seventeenth century. This historical perspective provides an introduction to the fundamental questions in color science, by following advances as well as misconceptions over more than 300 years. The next chapters then discuss the relationship between light, the retinal image, and photoreceptors, followed by a focus on concepts such as color matching and color discrimination; color appearance and color difference specification; the physiology of color vision; the 15 mechanisms of the physics and chemistry of color; and digital color reproduction. Each chapter begins with a short outline that summarizes the organization and breadth of its material. The outlines are valuable guides to chapter structure, and worth scanning even by readers who may not care to go through a chapter from start to finish. This book will be of interest to scientists, artists, manufacturers, and students.

This classic volume studies the physical and chemical origins of color by exploring fifteen separate causes of color and their varied and often subtle occurrences in biology, geology, mineralogy, the atmosphere, technology, and the visual arts. It covers all of the fundamental concepts at work and requires no specialized knowledge. Author Kurt Nassau includes hundreds of illustrations, tables, and photographs-as well as end-of-chapter problems-that aid in visualizing the concepts discussed. An updated bibliography permits readers to pursue their own particular interests and an expanded series of appendices cover advanced topics. The Physics and Chemistry of Color, Second Edition is a one-of-a-kind treatment of color that provides both detailed physical and chemical properties of color and a more general overview of the subject. It will prove highly useful to specialists and non-specialists alike-and fascinate those with varied interests from optics to art history.

Book excerpt: This volume gives a broad overview of advanced technologies for detection and defence against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) agents. It provides chapters addressing the preparation and characterization of different nanoscale materials (metals, oxides, glasses, polymers, carbon-based, etc.) and their applications in fields related to security and safety. In addition, it presents an interdisciplinary approach as the contributors come from different areas of research, such as physics, chemistry, engineering, materials science and biology. A major feature of the book is the combination of longer chapters introducing the basic knowledge on a certain topic, and shorter contributions highlighting specific applications in different security areas.
