Book excerpt: Physics is defined as the “science that deals with matter and energy and their interactions, the physical processes and phenomena of a particular system, and the physical properties and composition of something”. That pretty much covers everything when you think about it. Ernst Rutherford once said, “Physics is everything, the rest is just stamp collecting.” That might be a bit over the top, but physics is the most fundamental of the sciences since it deals with the study of how the universe operates from the very large to the very small. Since the scope of physics ranges from the large scale structure of galaxies to the small scale structure of fundamental particles, and everything in between, it is important to have a uniform language and method for discussing physical phenomena. Fortunately, we don't need the full dictionary of physics for the topics that we will be studying in mechanics and heat. We will only need to define and use those concepts that assist us in understanding topics in mechanics such as linear motion, rotational motion, vibrational motion, and wave motion. We will also investigate thermal physics, so when we reach that point we will introduce some new concepts that will enable us to investigate thermal phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculations in Fundamental Physics, Volume I: Mechanics and Heat focuses on the mechanisms of heat. The manuscript first discusses motion, including parabolic, angular, and rectilinear motions, relative velocity, acceleration of gravity, and non-uniform acceleration. The book then discusses combinations of forces, such as polygons and resolution, friction, center of gravity, shearing force, and bending moment. The text looks at force and acceleration, energy and power, and machines. Considerations include momentum, horizontal or vertical motion, work and energy, pulley systems, gears and chains, and rotation and power. Elasticity, expansion and temperature, and static fluids are also discussed. The manuscript examines ideal gases, quantity of heat, centripetal acceleration, and rotary inertia. Topics include change of density, constant temperature, specific and latent heat, and gravitation and circular orbits. The text also explains simple harmonic motion, transfer of heat, molecular theory of gases and vapors, thermodynamics, and fluid flow. The book is a valuable source of information for readers interested in the mechanisms of heat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook offers a description of physical phenomena according to the scope of Classical Physics following an approach typical of Experimental Physics. The first volume describes phenomena related to Mechanics and Thermodynamics and the second volume analyses phenomena related to Electromagnetism also providing a digression on the phenomena that led to the crisis of Classical Physics. The level of content identifies the book as an introductory Physics textbook for Engineering and Science which requires an advanced knowledge of mathematical methods. Several cases and exercises are offered in order to allow users to test their understanding of the explained contents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique introduction to physics for readers who are particularly interested in the human body covers a limited number of distinct physics topics (related to mechanics and heat) in great depth and with many examples and problems that relate directly to readers' interests. Each topic is developed quantitatively using high school-level algebra (linear equations, simultaneous equations), trigonometric functions, and vectors. Applications focus on typical situations--e.g., the need for and proper use of a cane; the need for heat transfer from the body to the environment during exercise and the relative contributions of the various mechanisms (convection, radiation, evaporation of sweat); the relation between energy ingested as food and energy expended during exercise; etc. Motion; Force; Vectors; Newton's Second Law; Momentum And Impulse; Angular Motion; Torque; Shoulder; Knee; Lower Back; FHP; Heat And Energy; Conservation Of Energy; Work; Chemical Energy; Elastic Energy; Nuclear Energy. For premedical students, Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists.

Book excerpt: Many of the world’s most common processes and interactions are governed by the laws of thermodynamics and mechanics. While the transfer, release, or absorption of heat often accompany chemical reactions or seem inherent to mechanical systems, they are also familiar to anyone who has ever spent time outdoors on a warm day or touched a hot plate. Likewise, any physical body—large or small, solid or fluid—is subject to a wide range of forces that trigger motion. This detailed compendium explores the foundations and laws of both thermodynamics and mechanics as well as the lives of those individuals who helped advance these fundamental areas of physics.
