This book was released on 1961 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surface and general hydrophilic characteristics of proteinic and cotton fibers were measured. The methods of selective wetting and of the non-dissolving volume were used. In the substances studied, a complete incongruity between the general and surface hydrophilic characteristics was found. Cases were discovered when the surface was hydrophobic while the substance was generally clearly hydrophilic (hair, feathers), and also cases were found when the surface was strongly hydrophilic while the substance was generally mildly hydrophilic (silk, cellulose fibers). The hydrophilic characteristics of the surface of fibrous substances give the most correct idea of their behavior during absorption processes. It is demonstrated that all methods of chemical treatment leading to an increase in the affinity of the surface of hair for water promote its more intense dyeing. Wettability measurements are a convenient method of controlling and studying such processes. (Author).

Book Synopsis Ultrastructure of Protein Fibers by : Rubin Borasky
Download or read book Ultrastructure of Protein Fibers written by Rubin Borasky and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrastructure of Protein Fibers covers the papers presented at a symposium of the 19th annual meeting of the Electron Microscope Society of America, held at the Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 21, 1961. The book focuses on the composition, characteristics, properties, and reactions of protein fibers. The selection first offers information on some essential aspects of protein fiber research, including the elucidation of the fundamental ultra-architecture of proteins in general; identification of the biological role played by fibrous proteins in living organisms; and the use of protein fibers as a natural resource in the form of raw materials and finished products. The manuscript then examines the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of protein fibers, collagen, and keratins. The text takes a look at some aspects of the ultrastructure of bacterial flagella and feather keratin and fibrous protein systems in muscles. Topics include possible change in myofilament structure underlying the catch function; physiological functions of the fibrous proteins of muscles; organization of the fibrous proteins in muscles; and other functions of fibrous proteins in muscles. The selection is a valuable reference for researchers interested in the ultrastructure of protein fibers.
Book Synopsis Chemistry of Natural Protein Fibers by : R. S. Asquith
Download or read book Chemistry of Natural Protein Fibers written by R. S. Asquith and published by Springer. This book was released on 1977-04-30 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume arose originally from the complaints of the editor's students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, that there was no modern book on protein fibers which told enough about protein science and chemical tech nologies related to fibers. By and large this is probably a reasonable cri de coeur. The undergraduate on a technological course, lacking information on the basic scientific techniques used to carry out the research on which his fiber technology is based, can find it difficult to obtain this information. The pure science undergraduate often lacks knowledge of the application of these techniques in protein fiber technology. The young graduates, com mencing research related to some aspect of protein fibers, are drawn from a wide range of scientific disciplines, having been trained as biochemists, chemists, physicists, technologists, and histologists, to name but a few. Generally these new research workers pass through a preliminary "lost" period in which they have to evaluate their background in relation to the wide and differing fields of research in protein fiber science to which they are now exposed. As time goes on they then either develop a wide knowledge covering science and technology or remain in a specific part of their original discipline, with a narrow knowledge of its application in the field of the research degree they are taking.

Book Synopsis The Extracellular Matrix: an Overview by : Robert Mecham
Download or read book The Extracellular Matrix: an Overview written by Robert Mecham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-16 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is essential to understand cellular differentiation, tissue development, and tissue remodeling. This volume of the series “Biology of Extracellular Matrix” provides a timely overview of the structure, regulation, and function of the major macromolecules that make up the extracellular matrix. It covers topics such as collagen types and assembly of collagen-containing suprastructures, basement membrane, fibronectin and other cell-adhesive glycoproteins, proteoglycans, microfibrils, elastin, fibulins and matricellular proteins, such as thrombospondin. It also explores the concept that ECM components together with their cell surface receptors can be viewed as intricate nano-devices that allow cells to physically organize their 3-D-environment. Further, the role of the ECM in human disease and pathogenesis is discussed as well as the use of model organisms in elucidating ECM function.
