Book excerpt: How does the past live in us? Do we inherit our ancestors' memories as we do their physical characteristics? In the nineteenth century, mainstream science embraced a long-standing superstition: the belief that memory could be inherited. Scientists reasoned that, just as bodies were reproduced from generation to generation, so were thoughts, memories, and cultural achievements. Heredity and identity were no mere family matter, but the basis of nations. The glories and sins of the past were not gone: they remained in the tissues of living people, who could be honored or blamed accordingly. Organic Memory surveys the literary and scientific history of an idea that will not go away. Focusing on the years between 1870 and 1918, Otis explores both the origins and the consequences of the idea that memories can be inherited. The organic memory theory contributed to the genocidal programs of the Third Reich, and it erupts in pop-psychology, racist propaganda, and ethnic cleansing. To track the spread, intensity, and endurance of this especially powerful idea, Otis singles out major authors whose work reinforced or ridiculed belief in organic memory. They include writers who were internationally influential yet who simultaneously represented their national traditions: Thomas Mann, Sigmund Freud, C. G. Jung, Emile Zola, Thomas Hardy, Miguel de Unamuno, Po Baroja, Emilia Pardo Baz¾n, and even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The debates over the human genome project and the explosions of ethnic violence in the former Yugoslavia, in Azerbaijan, Somalia, and elsewhere demonstrate how seriously organic memory continues to affect modern medicine and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain ... There is no other part of the human anatomy that is so intriguing. How does it develop and function and why does it sometimes, tragically, degenerate? The answers are complex. In Discovering the Brain, science writer Sandra Ackerman cuts through the complexity to bring this vital topic to the public. The 1990s were declared the "Decade of the Brain" by former President Bush, and the neuroscience community responded with a host of new investigations and conferences. Discovering the Brain is based on the Institute of Medicine conference, Decade of the Brain: Frontiers in Neuroscience and Brain Research. Discovering the Brain is a "field guide" to the brainâ€"an easy-to-read discussion of the brain's physical structure and where functions such as language and music appreciation lie. Ackerman examines: How electrical and chemical signals are conveyed in the brain. The mechanisms by which we see, hear, think, and pay attentionâ€"and how a "gut feeling" actually originates in the brain. Learning and memory retention, including parallels to computer memory and what they might tell us about our own mental capacity. Development of the brain throughout the life span, with a look at the aging brain. Ackerman provides an enlightening chapter on the connection between the brain's physical condition and various mental disorders and notes what progress can realistically be made toward the prevention and treatment of stroke and other ailments. Finally, she explores the potential for major advances during the "Decade of the Brain," with a look at medical imaging techniquesâ€"what various technologies can and cannot tell usâ€"and how the public and private sectors can contribute to continued advances in neuroscience. This highly readable volume will provide the public and policymakersâ€"and many scientists as wellâ€"with a helpful guide to understanding the many discoveries that are sure to be announced throughout the "Decade of the Brain."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Core textbook showcasing the broad scope and coherence of physical chemistry Principles of Physical Chemistry introduces undergraduate students to the concepts and methods of physical chemistry, which are fundamental to all of Chemistry. In their unique approach, the authors guide students along a logically consistent pathway from the principles of quantum mechanics and molecular structure to the properties of ensembles and supramolecular machines, with many examples from biology and nanoscience. By systematically proceeding from atoms to increasingly complex forms of matter, the book elucidates the connection between recognizable paradigms and modern chemistry research in a student-friendly manner. To promote intuition and understanding for beginning students, the text introduces concepts before proceeding to more rigorous treatments. Rigorous proofs and derivations are provided, as electronic supplements, for more advanced students. The book poses over 900 exercises and problems to help the student learn and master methods for physicochemical reasoning. Computational supplementary material, including Fortran simulations, MathCAD exercises, and Mathematica programs, are included on a companion website. Some topics discussed in the text are: Electronic structure and Variational Principle, including Pauli exclusion, spin-orbit interactions, and electron confinement in quantum dots. Chemical bonding and molecular structure, including electron tunneling, comparison of electron-in-a-box models and electron orbital methods, and the mechanics of chemical bonds. Absorption and emission of light, including transition dipoles for π-electron systems, coupled chromophores, excitons, and chiroptical activity. Statistical description of molecular ensembles, including microscopic interpretations of phase transitions, entropy, work, and heat. Chemical equilibria, including statistical description of equilibrium constants, electrochemistry, and the exposition of fundamental reaction types. Reaction kinetics and reaction dynamics, including nonlinear coupled reactions, femtochemistry, and solvent effects on reactions. Physicochemical properties of macromolecules and the principles of supramolecular assemblies, including polymer dynamics and chemical control of interfaces. The logic of supramolecular machines and their manipulation of photon, electron, and nuclear motion. With its highly coherent and systematic approach to the subject, Principles of Physical Chemistry is an ideal textbook and resource for students in undergraduate physical chemistry courses, especially those in programs of study related to chemistry, engineering, and molecular and chemical biology.

Book excerpt: This book contains lecture notes and invited contributions presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute and EPS Liquid State Conference on PHYSICOCHEMICAL HYDRODYNAMICS-PCH: INTERFACIAL PHENOMENA that were held July 1-15, 1986, in LA RABIDA (Huelva) SPAIN. Although we are aware of the difficulty in organizing the contents due to the broad and multidisciplinary aspects of PCH-Interfacial Phenomena, we have tried to accomodate papers by topics and have not followed the order in the presentation at the meetings. There is also no distinction between the ASI notes and Conference papers. We have done our best to offer a coverage as complete as possible of the field. However, we had difficulties coming from the fact that some authors were so busy that either did not find time to submit their contribution or did not have time to write a comprehensive paper. We also had to cope with very late arrivals, postdeadline valuable contributions that we felt had to be included here. Our gratitude goes to the NATO Scientific Affairs Division for its economic support and to the EPS Liquid State Committee for its sponsorship. Financial support also came from Asociacion Industrias Quimicas-Huelva (Spain), Caycit-Ministerio De Educacion Y Ciencia (Spain), Canon-Espana (Spain), Citibank-Espana (Spain), CNLS-Los Alamos Nat. Book excerpt: Of all the areas of biological science, there is, perhaps, none that has experienced in recent decades so great an increase in findings as neurobiology, the discipline that concerns memory in all of its myriad aspects. The notion of exploring memory, that capacity to store and recall individual experience, has received attention increasingly in our society. Of course, animals can exhibit astounding powers of memory, but memory is of paramount importance to human beings due to the significant role it plays in the transmission of our cultural traditions. It is tradition, after all, that ensures the passing on of qualities established by lineage, a continuous link from generation to generation, between past and present. And it is tradition that inspires bodies of thought (knowledge and customs, for example) to be handed down by a multiplicity of information bearing devices (i. e. , word, writing, picture, electronic data carriers). The objective of this book is to inform the reader in one clear volume of the groundwork which has been established in memory research from the diverse disciplines of neurobiology. It is intended, primarily, for students of medicine, zoology, biology, psychology and psychiatry, but will certainly prove to be a valuable resource to others with a healthy interest in the area.
