Book excerpt: "Perhaps our real work, whether offering or seeking care, is to recognize that the healing relationship--the field upon which patient and practitioner meet--is, to use the words of the mythologist Joseph Campbell, a 'self-mirroring mystery'--the embodiment of a singular human activity that raises essential questions about self, other, and what it means to heal thy self." --Saki Santorelli Today we are experiencing extraordinary technological advances in the diagnosis and treatment of illness while at the same time learning to take more responsibility for our own health and well-being. In this book, Saki Santorelli, director of the nationally acclaimed Stress Reduction Clinic, explores the ancient roots of medicine, and shows us how to introduce mindfulness into the crucible of the healing relationship, so that both patients and caregivers begin to acknowledge that we are all wounded and we are all whole. His approach revolutionizes the dynamics of the patient/practitioner relationship. In describing the classes at the clinic and the transformation that takes place in this alchemical process, he offers insights and effective methods for cultivating mindfulness in our everyday lives. As he reveals the inner landscape of his own life as a health care professional and we join him and those with whom he works on this journey of human suffering and courage, we become aware of and honor what is darkest and brightest within each one of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Veatch is one of the most distinguished American bioethicists, having in many ways helped to create that field. His new book is on a theme he has developed for thirty years: his view that a fundamental and radical change is sweeping through the American health care system but has so far received relatively little attention. This change is so fundamental and far-reaching that Veatch claims we are in the early stages of a 'new medicine' that will replace what we think of as modern medical practice. The change is in how we think about medical decision-making. Whereas modern medicine's core idea was that medical decisions should be based on the cold, hard facts of science -- the province of the doctor -- the 'new medicine' reflects the notion that medical decisions impose value judgments. Since physicians can claim no expertise on making those value judgments, the pendulum has swung greatly toward the patient in evaluating alternatives and making decisions about their treatment. While the doctor's expertise is consulted, the patient is in control. In short, doctor no longer knows best. Veatch shows how this is only true for value-loaded interventions (abortion, euthanasia, genetics) but coming to be true for almost every routine procedure in medicine -- everything from setting broken arms, to choosing drugs for cholesterol or osteoporosis. Veatch uses a range of fascinating contemporary and historical examples to reveal how values underly almost all medical procedures, and illustrate his case that this change is inevitable and a positive trend for patients.

Book excerpt: Dr. Shapiro is a physician with a forty-five-year career in community psychiatry. He also has an interest in Mind-Body-Spirit Medicine and has created a self-help, self-healing model he uses himself and teaches to patients, students, and staff members if they are interested. The model is called Healing Power, which is described in Healing Power: Ten Steps to Pain Management and Spiritual Evolution Revised (2010) and Healing Power, The Workbook (2015). Healing Power is a compendium of the wisdom of the ages from the sages, translated into cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and meditative practices designed specifically for healthcare professionals and their patients. In this book, Dr. Shapiro tells the back-story behind the creation of Healing Power--a story about the universal dance between pain and healing. Healing Power is his answer to the blows wrought by brutal reality, developed after years of study and contemplation. It is a grand scheme about the transformation of suffering into love and wisdom. Healing Power offers a gold mine of spiritual principles, methods, qualities, and pearls of wisdom that will help you and your patients become ever-increasingly skillful pain managers. You will learn how to: Turn the tables on your pain and make it work for rather than against you. Use your pain as a teacher and stimulant for the growth of healing qualities such as love, compassion, patience, kindness, humor, forgiveness, courage, strength, and perseverance, qualities that will help you in every domain of your life, both personal and professional. Feel better. Become a better person. Experience higher states of consciousness: the peace that surpasses understanding, pure unconditional love, intuitive wisdom, unfathomable stillness, and ecstatic joy. People call this bliss, nirvana, God, Christ Consciousness, the Atman, or soul. It doesn't matter what you call it; the experience is gorgeous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke 4:14-30: "And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord." "And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." "And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, "Is this not Joseph's son?" And He said to them, "No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard was done at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.'" What is the irony of this historical proverb, and how did Jesus use it to illustrate the expectations upon Him from those He ministered to? How can we as physicians and caregivers look to His example when met with the pressures of medical care today? Join me in this much-needed contemplation for the soul, the mind, body and spirit, for those who seek to give their all for others, while sometimes needing to pause when counting the cost.
