Download or read book Peperite written by Ian P. Skilling and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 2002 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers concerned with the processes and products of magma-sediment mingling and the origin of peperite. Three papers are concerned with physical modelling of magma-wet sediment interaction, whereas the majority of the papers describe a wide variety of peperite compositional and textural types, and discuss controls on their formation. The first paper reviews the current understanding of peperite generation, and serves as an extended introduction to the volume. Peperite is a common rock type generated in many volcanic and sub-volcanic environments. Its study is important for several reasons. Correct identification of peperite is critical in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and relative chronology, as its presence can demonstrate contemporaneity of volcanism and sedimentation. Peperite may also record a snapshot of the processes that occur prior to hydromagmatic explosions, and which are otherwise not preserved in the resulting deposit. Its study can therefore provide information on the factors and mechanisms that influence the likelihood of such hazardous explosions. Peperite also indicates the presence of syn-volcanic sills that may be important sources of heat and/or fluids for co-eval hydrothermal systems.

Book Synopsis Fifty Years of the Wilson Cycle Concept in Plate Tectonics by : R.W. Wilson
Download or read book Fifty Years of the Wilson Cycle Concept in Plate Tectonics written by R.W. Wilson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, Tuzo Wilson published his paper asking `Did the Atlantic close and then re-open?’. This led to the `Wilson Cycle’ concept in which the repeated opening and closing of ocean basins along old orogenic belts is a key process in the assembly and breakup of supercontinents. The Wilson Cycle underlies much of what we know about the geological evolution of the Earth and its lithosphere, and will no doubt continue to be developed as we gain more understanding of the physical processes that control mantle convection, plate tectonics, and as more data become available from currently less accessible regions. This volume includes both thematic and review papers covering various aspects of the Wilson Cycle concept. Thematic sections include: (1) the Classic Wilson v. Supercontinent Cycles, (2) Mantle Dynamics in the Wilson Cycle, (3) Tectonic Inheritance in the Lithosphere, (4) Revisiting Tuzo’s question on the Atlantic, (5) Opening and Closing of Oceans, and (6) Cratonic Basins and their place in the Wilson Cycle.

Book Synopsis Field Studies of Radon in Rocks, Soils, and Water by : Gundersen/Wanty
Download or read book Field Studies of Radon in Rocks, Soils, and Water written by Gundersen/Wanty and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-11-30 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Studies of Radon in Rocks, Soils, and Water focuses on the principal sources of indoor radon and detecting radon through geochemical and hydrological studies of ground water. The book addresses how to measure radon, covers geological field study techniques, and presents techniques for assessing radon potential. The geochemical and hydrological studies of ground water cover such areas as health effects and radionuclides in geology. Techniques for measuring radon in ground water are also provided. Field Studies of Radon in Rocks, Soils, and Water is an excellent practical guide for geologists, geochemists, ground water professionals, and geophysicists interested in radon. Features
Download or read book Volcanology written by Ray Cas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a substantially updated, revised and extended version of the book Volcanic Successions, published by Cas and Wright back in 1987. Divided into six major parts, it offers comprehensive information on magma properties; fragmentation processes; subaerial and subaqueous lava types and field textures; sub-volcanic intrusions; explosive or pyroclastic eruptions and deposits; surface sedimentary processes; hydrothermal alteration and lithification, and effects on volcanic rock textures; terminology and approaches to describing and mapping volcanic rocks and terrains; geology of volcanoes and facies models; volcanism and tectonic setting; and to conclude, volcanic-hosted resources. It is a highly up-to-date text, presenting a coherent flow of topics, together with excellent visual material to illustrate key points and deposit features. The new authorship team consists of Ray Cas, Guido Giordano and John Wright, all of whom have extensive experience across the complete spectrum of volcanological processes and deposit types discussed in this exciting new book. The authors approach the diversity of products in volcanic terrains as facies, and use facies analysis and interpretation as a means of constructing facies models for different volcanic settings and their resources. The book is intended as a textbook and research reference book for senior undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and professionals alike.

Book Synopsis The Joggins Fossil Cliffs by : John Calder
Download or read book The Joggins Fossil Cliffs written by John Calder and published by Formac Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Joggins Fossil Cliffs offer an unprecedented glimpse into the Earth's history. Bearing fossils of organisms from the lush, tropical forests that existed in the Coal Age — when the continents were assembled into one huge land mass or supercontinent, Pangea — Joggins traces, through layers of sediment, the massive environmental and geologic shifts that have occurred in the planet in the intervening millennia. From fossilized trees that stood thirty metres high to the remains of the earliest known reptile, Hylonomus lyelli, Joggins holds important information about the development of life on Earth — including offering lessons about human impacts on the environment. The Cliffs also share a story of human tenacity and rigorous debate on historical theories of evolution. Sir Charles Lyell and Sir William Dawson, two early geologists who studied Joggins extensively, influenced Charles Darwin with their findings of early fossil remains, particularly hollow tree fauna. The extent of their research at the Joggins site remains unparalleled and significant to this day. The book outlines these stories and more, including Mi'kmaq settlement of the area and the rise of the coal mining industry in the 19th century. It also shares the perspectives of Joggins residents today, and their efforts to preserve this globally significant location and the precious historical information it holds.
Book Synopsis The Nature of Magmatism in the Appalachian Orogen by : A. Krishna Sinha
Download or read book The Nature of Magmatism in the Appalachian Orogen written by A. Krishna Sinha and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal evolution of mountain belts is recorded inthe distribution, origin and ages of magnatism. In this volume, petrologic, isotopic and geochemical evidence is presented to highlight the contribution of igneous rocks to the evolution of the Appalachian Orogen in both Canada and the United States. These papers emphasize the use of modern geochemical and petrologic data to discriminate the sources yielding magmas, and thus the nature of the crust and mantle.
