Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Training for Special Classes of the Elementary Schools The problems, however, presented by the children of the special classes are SO different from those encountered in reg ular grade work, that the ordinary methods Of procedure must be greatly modified to meet the special class Conditions. The several kinds of special classes require more or less different kinds Of work, and the different pupils (graded not in accordance with conventional school standards but classi fied on the basis Of mentality as of Group A, institutional type; Group B, inherently backward; or Group C, somewhat higher capacity) must have the work varied to suit their individual abilities and needs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual for Physical Training in Elementary Schools The object of these exercises is not to build up big muscles or to tax the strength but to produce a sense of well-being. The time required in taking them is so limited that they are not taxing in any sense, but are simple, pleasurable, and exhilarating, even Without regard to the healthful effects produced. The exercises are for the most part directed towards the improvement of the trunk rather than that of the limbs. The trunk contains the vital organs. It is. Like the engine in a motor car. It is here that the organic and functional activities are carried on. It is here that the breathing is done. It is here that the heart operates and the whole digestive tract functions. It is here that the faulty carriage of the body begins and it is here that bad habits and ex cesses make themselves felt. When the breathing is proper, when the operations of digestion are going on normally, when the heart is function ingas it should, one may be assured that the child or pupil is traveling in the direction of health, and it is along this line that these exercises are directed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus for Physical Education in the Schools of Rhode Island A similar public policy was evidenced in the statute, en acted ih 1917, that authorizes school committees to establish and maintain at public expense clinics for the remedying of dental de fects and the treatment of the teeth of school children whose parents, after notice, neglect to take action. The law requiring physical edu cation was requested ih petitions addressed to the State Board of Education, which were signed by hundreds of persons professing an interest in the welfare of school children. There could be no serious question that a popular demand for physical educationexisted. The movement was promoted particularly by the Rhode Island Branch of the National Congress of Mothers and Parent Teacher Associations. A bill was prepared in the office of the Com missioner of Public Schools, and it was introduced in the General Assembly by the Honorable James M. Armstrong, Senator from East Providence and Chairman of the Committee on Education. The law requires that every child over eight years of age who is attending any school, or who is being educated privately, shall re ceive instruction and practice in physical training, under such regu lations as the State Board of Education may prescribe or approve, during periods which shall average at least twenty minutes in each school day. To the teachers of the public and private schools of Rhode Island is entrusted the duty and responsibility of carrying this salutary legislation into effect - a duty and responsibility that should be met with the conscientious care and public spirit which characterize Rhode Island teachers. The essential and fundamental requirement of the law is twenty minutes of instruction or directed exercise for every child during every school day. This requirement must be met in school and in school time. This Syllabus for Physical Education has been prepared for the purpose of guiding teachers in meeting the requirements of the new law, and it presents a course of instruction planned to cover the eight grades of elementary schools and the four years of high schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Exercises in Physical Training, Vol. 1 Since those who do the actual teaching are the ones who should understand the needs and conditions best, all the members of the Physical Training Department were called in conference. This book embodies many features suggested by their experience. It is only when we attain correct and energetic execution on the part of the pupils, when teachers and pupils alike have grasped the purpose of each exercise, so as to be able to detect and correct faulty execution, that we may hope for those results which alone justify teaching this subject. In order that the greatest possible good may accrue to the pupils, the teachers must thoroughly acquaint themselves with the subject matter. The Instructions to Teachers, the descriptions of the exercises, the manner of giving commands, as well as the lessons which are to be given, must be carefully studied. Teachers must also observe closely the work of the special teachers, and learn the best methods of giving a gymnastic lesson. In this way they will learn to use to the best possible advantage the limited time allowed this subject. The lessons must be memorized so that they can be given without reference to the book. There must be a regular time in the daily program for the exercises, and at this time the complete lesson should be given. The conditions under which the work is conducted in the regular class room are not altogether favorable. For this reason the success of the lesson will depend largely upon the attitude of the class teacher. The fidelity and faithful cooperation of the teachers and those in charge of the schools will determine the results attained. This manual contains fifty lessons, each of which is intended to be for two weeks. Each grade will use twenty lessons, as follows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises and Drills: Being a Teacher's Manual of Physical Training Containing a Progressive Series of Exercises for Use in Schools Without the Aid of Apparatus It is the object of the writer to place in the hands of school teachers a Manual of Physical Training which can be easily understood, and which will prove of assistance in conducting this important branch of school work. The method of arrangement will indicate to the teacher such of the important movements as are suitable for the class room, and will show how they can be properly arranged into short drills. Like every other branch of school work, Physical Training has its difficulties, and the lessons or drills may sometimes lag, but with a little effort on the part of the teacher interest can be awakened, and the real pleasure and benefit derived, when teacher and pupils become familiar with the drill, will more than repay for the effort it costs to make the daily drill a bright Spot in the day's routine. Various systems of Physical Training have been advocated during recent years. They all have their merits and can be commended each for its own peculiar excellencies. But for use in schools they all need modification and adaptation to the conditions and limitations of the school room. The system of exercises and drills presented in this Manual attempts to make a judicious selection of the best features of the different systems. It cannot, therefore, be classed with the Swedish system, with the German system, or with any other of the current systems. If it is to have a special name, it would, perhaps, best be called Eclectic. It is the practice of some systems to omit certain exercises on the ground that they tend to confirm the pupil in his incor rect postures. The method adopted by this Manual, however, is to provide counteracting exercises, without omitting any exercises necessary for symmetrical development. And, in order to emphasize the correct posture, it is the uniform prac tice of this system to follow the contracting and stooping movements by the straightening, extending and expanding movements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Gymnastics Free Hand: A Graded Course of Physical Exercises for Schools The course of lessons herewith presented for school use is in two divisions - freehand and light apparatus exercise, respectively. Each of these divisions is a complete course in itself, covering eight years of work, from the lowest primary to the highest grammar. The free-hand work, which is con tained in this volume, can be used in the regular classroom, though a special room is obviously desirable. The apparatus work necessitates free floor space. The free-hand exercises, also the lowest five courses of apparatus exercise, are for either boys or girls. Several of the higher courses for apparatus have separate work for boys and girls, even when the same kind of apparatus is used for both.
