Book Synopsis Comparison of Numerical and Physical Models of Wave Response in a Harbor by : Peter L. Crawford
Download or read book Comparison of Numerical and Physical Models of Wave Response in a Harbor written by Peter L. Crawford and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of a numerical and a physical model study of wave response of the small-boat harbor at Barcelona, New York, are presented and compared. The numerical model used was HARBD, a monochromatic linear wave model. Both monochromatic and irregular waves were considered, and wave superposition was used to investigate harbor response to irregular waves. Wave records from the physical model tests matched the intended wave forcing conditions near the wave generator. Wave records in and around the harbor, however, usually showed the effects of nonlinearity and in some instances exhibited wave grouping and the effects of breaking and overtopping. Hence, even for the monochromatic tests, the water surface oscillations at each gage in the harbor were characterized by a distribution of wave heights. Procedures were developed for displaying information about the irregularity of physical model wave records. These procedures provide a rational means for comparing numerical and physical model results. Using them, engineering judgement can be used to assess the nature of irregular waves in the physical model and to assess, for a given application, the appropriateness of the linear theory assumption of the numerical model. Keywords: Finite element method, Hybrid element method, Water waves. (AW).

Book Synopsis Updated Wave Response of Proposed Improvements to the Small Boat Harbor at Maalaea, Maui, Hawaii by : Lori L. Hadley
Download or read book Updated Wave Response of Proposed Improvements to the Small Boat Harbor at Maalaea, Maui, Hawaii written by Lori L. Hadley and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the request of the U.S. Army Engineer Division, Pacific Ocean (POD), a numerical model wave response study of proposed improvements to Maalaea smali boat harbor was conducted by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station's (USAEWES) Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL). The study was conducted as a revision and extension of previous studies (Lillycrop et al. 1993, Thompson and Hadley 1 994b) to assess the wave response of various alternative modification plans for the harbor. This report - is focused on the determination of an optimal design plan which would provide the harbor with adequate protection from the incident wave climate. Information provided in earlier reports is referenced in this report, but generally not repeated.

Book Synopsis Physical Models and Laboratory Techniques in Coastal Engineering by : Steven A. Hughes
Download or read book Physical Models and Laboratory Techniques in Coastal Engineering written by Steven A. Hughes and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory physical models are a valuable tool for coastal engineers. Physical models help us to understand the complex hydrodynamic processes occurring in the nearshore zone and they provide reliable and economic engineering design solutions. This book is about the art and science of physical modeling as applied in coastal engineering. The aim of the book is to consolidate and synthesize into a single text much of the knowledge about physical modeling that has been developed worldwide. This book was written to serve as a graduate-level text for a course in physical modeling or as a reference text for engineers and researchers engaged in physical modeling and laboratory experimentation. The first three chapters serve as an introduction to similitude and physical models, covering topics such as advantages and disadvantages of physical models, systems of units, dimensional analysis, types of similitude and various hydraulic similitude criteria applicable to coastal engineering models.Practical application of similitude principles to coastal engineering studies is covered in Chapter 4 (Hydrodynamic Models), Chapter 5 (Coastal Structure Models) and Chapter 6 (Sediment Transport Models). These chapters develop the appropriate similitude criteria, discuss inherent laboratory and scale effects and overview the technical literature pertaining to these types of models. The final two chapters focus on the related subjects of laboratory wave generation (Chapter 7) and measurement and analysis techniques (Chapter 8).
