Book excerpt: Explore the latest research in anthropological genetics and understand the genome’s role in cultural and social development A Companion to Anthropological Genetics illustrates the role of genetic analysis in advancing the modern study of human origins, populations, evolution, and diversity. Broad in scope, this essential reference work establishes and explores the relationship between genetic research and the major questions of anthropological study. Through contributions by leading researchers, this collection explores molecular genetics and evolutionary mechanisms in the context of macro- and microevolution, paleontology, phylogeny, diet, and disease, with detailed explanations of quantitative methods, including coalescent and approximate Bayesian computation. With an emphasis on contextualizing new and developing genetic research within anthropological frameworks, this text offers critical perspective on the conditions of molecular evolution that accompany cultural and social transformation, while also addressing critical disciplinary questions, such as the ethical issues surrounding ancestry testing and community-based genetic research. Acts as an essential reference on the contributions of genetic science to the field of anthropology Features new work by leading researchers of the field Explores the evolution of immunity, including the genetics and epigenetics of pathogens, chronic illness, and disease resistance Provides in-depth examination of mutation and dietary adaptation, including AMY1, lactase persistence, and sensory polymorphisms Explains essential quantitative and phylogenetic methods for aligning genomic analysis with evolution and migration time scales Offering thorough coverage on leading questions and developing research, A Companion to Anthropological Genetics is a comprehensive resource for students and scholars.

Book Synopsis Simulating Human Origins and Evolution by : K. P. Wessen
Download or read book Simulating Human Origins and Evolution written by K. P. Wessen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-04-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of populations over time, and, on longer timescales, the evolution of species, are both influenced by a complex of interacting, underlying processes. Computer simulation provides a means of experimenting within an idealised framework to allow aspects of these processes and their interactions to be isolated, controlled, and understood. In this book, computer simulation is used to model migration, extinction, fossilisation, interbreeding, selection and non-hereditary effects in the context of human populations and the observed distribution of fossil and current hominoid species. The simulations described enable the visualisation and study of lineages, genetic diversity in populations, character diversity across species and the accuracy of reconstructions, allowing insights into human evolution and the origins of humankind for graduate students and researchers in the fields of physical anthropology, human evolution, and human genetics.
Book Synopsis Human Biodiversity by : Jonathan Marks
Download or read book Human Biodiversity written by Jonathan Marks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are humans unique? This simple question, at the very heart of the hybrid field of biological anthropology, poses one of the false of dichotomies—with a stereotypical humanist answering in the affirmative and a stereotypical scientist answering in the negative. The study of human biology is different from the study of the biology of other species. In the simplest terms, people's lives and welfare may depend upon it, in a sense that they may not depend on the study of other scientific subjects. Where science is used to validate ideas—four out of five scientists preferring a brand of cigarettes or toothpaste—there is a tendency to accept the judgment as authoritative without asking the kinds of questions we might ask of other citizens' pronouncements.

Book Synopsis Biological Anthropology by : Noel Thomas Boaz
Download or read book Biological Anthropology written by Noel Thomas Boaz and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the introductory physical anthropology course. It may also be appropriate for the upper level biological anthropology course. This innovative new text narrates the history of the evolutionary progression of the human lineage through time. Evolution by natural selection provides the conceptual framework as students learn the essentials of molecular anthropology and genetics, then are led through geological time to the origins of vertebrates, mammals, primates, hominoids, and finally hominids. In each section, behavior, morphology, adaptation, and ecology are discussed to provide the comparative basis for human origins.
Book Synopsis Human Evolutionary Biology by : Michael P. Muehlenbein
Download or read book Human Evolutionary Biology written by Michael P. Muehlenbein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide-ranging and inclusive, this text provides an invaluable review of an expansive selection of topics in human evolution, variation and adaptability for professionals and students in biological anthropology, evolutionary biology, medical sciences and psychology. The chapters are organized around four broad themes, with sections devoted to phenotypic and genetic variation within and between human populations, reproductive physiology and behavior, growth and development, and human health from evolutionary and ecological perspectives. An introductory section provides readers with the historical, theoretical and methodological foundations needed to understand the more complex ideas presented later. Two hundred discussion questions provide starting points for class debate and assignments to test student understanding.

"How did we evolve, and are we still evolving?" and "What does the future hold for the human species?--with an emphasis on hypothesis testing and the relationship between biology and culture.

This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 15th Congress of the European Anthropological Association, held under the title "MAN AND ENVIRONMENT: TRENDS AND CHALLENGES IN ANTHROPOLOGY", was organized by the Department of Biological Anthropology, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary. The Congress was also a celebration of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Department of Biological Anthropology of the university. The Congress strived to encompass all aspects of physical anthropology pertinent to the understanding of human origins as well as the variability of ancient and present populations. The main topic was: Man and Environment in the Past and at Present – Trends and Challenges in Anthropology. At the beginning of the 21st century it seemed important to summarize what we had learned in the last hundred years in order to help our younger colleagues in physical anthropology in understanding the current trends and to provide them with suggestions for their future research. The present volume contains a collection of the selected papers presented in the congress. The first section discusses some aspects of the human evolution and adaptation and reflects on the race concept. The second section discusses some skeletal variations in different populations and the effects of isolation, migration and life-style on genetic structure of populations. The third session gives an overview of the current state of our knowledge about growth and ageing that may mould our general approach to human ecology. This book will be especially useful physical anthropologists, human biologists, human geneticist, medical and bio-demographical scientists interested in knowing more about human variability.
