Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In biochemistry, a metalloprotein is a generic term for a protein that contains a metal cofactor. The metal may be an isolated ion or may be coordinated with a nonprotein organic compound, such as the porphyrin found in hemoproteins. In some cases, the metal is co-coordinated with a side chain of the protein and an inorganic nonmetallic ion. This kind of protein-metal-nonmetal structure is seen in iron-sulfur clusters Metalloproteins deals with all aspects related to the intracellular and extracellular metal-binding proteins, including their structures, properties and functions. The biological roles of metal cations and metal-binding proteins are endless. They are involved in all crucial cellular activities. Many pathological conditions are related to the problematic metal metabolism. Research in metalloprotein-related topics is therefore rapidly growing, and different aspects of metal-binding proteins progressively enter curricula at Universities and even at the High School level on occasion. However, no key resource providing basic, but comprehensible knowledge on this rapidly expanding field exists. The Encyclopedia of Metalloproteins aims to bridge this gap, and will attempt to cover various aspects of metalloprotein/metalloproteomics and will deal with the different issues related to the intracellular and extracellular metal-binding proteins, including their structures, properties and functions. The goal is to cover exhaustively all catalytically and biologically crucial metal ions and to find at least one interacting protein for other metal ions. The Encyclopedia of Metalloproteins will provide a key resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, instructors, and professors interested in protein science, biochemistry, cell biology, and genetics.

Book excerpt: The tensile behavior of dilute Ta-H and Ta-Mo alloys was studied as a function of alloying addition, grain size and test temperature at a constant strain rate. The results are interpreted in terms of the parameters sigma sub-i and k sub-y of the Petch equation. For Ta-H alloys at 25 C sigma sub-i was independent of hydrogen content whereas k sub-y increased with hydrogen content. Deformation twinning was not observed in Ta-H alloys either at 25 C or at -196 C. Dilute additions of Mo to Ta at 25 C resulted in an increase in k sub-y whereas sigma sub-i was unaffected. Twinning was observed at -196 C but not at 25 C.A large increase in ductility accompanied twinning.

Book excerpt: Creep and creep-rupture tests were performed at 1200 F in the helium on arc-cast and on sintered rolled tantalum sheet to investigate the effect of structure and gaseous contamination on the creep resistance of tantalum. A vacuum-induction furnace was developed for annealing and for degassing the as- received coldworked material. The tests were conducted with inertatmosphere resistance creep furnaces designed to prevent excessive interstitial-element pickup. The effect of hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen on the high-temperature strength of tantalum was not clearly discernible. Degassing of annealed sintered tantalum in flowing sodium produced in a lower oxygen contamination, but had no significant effect on creep resistance. The method of manufacture, the grain size, and the treatments performed on the material, on the other hand, produced a substantial effect on creep resistance. Annealed arccast tantalum possessed somewhat higher creep resistance at 1200 F than did annealed sintered tantalum. The highest creep resistance was found in a fine-grained sintered material which had been degassed 20 to 60 min at 4500 to 4650 F, cold rolled to an 80% reduction, and then recrystallized 10 to 15 min at about 2800 F prior to creep testing. The lowest creep resistance was noted for an extremely coarse-grained thermally degassed material. (auth).

Book excerpt: The effects of boron additions on the physical and mechanical properties of arc-melted tungsten and a tungsten -1 percent tantalum alloy were investigated. Boron additions significantly refined the arc-melted grain size of tungsten. The 1-hour recrystallization temperature was initially increased by small boron additions (approx. 0.01 atomic percent boron), after which it decreased continuously with increasing boron content. High-temperature tensile tests showed that the boron additions produced an initial rapid rise in strength followed by a leveling off of the strength-composition curve. Boron in solid solution was postulated to be the cause of the rapid increase in strength.

Book excerpt: Tensile tests were made on specimens of commercial Ta of different grain-sizes, and the variation of lower yield stress with grain-size 2d was used to assess the effect of temperature (23, -78 and -196 deg C) and strain-rate (0.0019 and 0.0996 sec. at each temperature) on the parameters sigma sub i and k sub y in a Petch type equation. The results indicate that the sensitivity of the yield strength to temperature and strain-rate arises almost entirely from the effects that these variables produce on sigma sub i. The high resistance of Ta to brittleness has been confirmed, all of the specimens showing pronounced necking and predominantly fibrous fractures; on the fracture surfaces of the coarser grained specimens tested at -196 deg C (both strain rates) some cleavage facets were observed. The greater ductility of Ta relative to Nb, Mo, and mild steel is attributed to a low value of k sub y and a high value of shear modulus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recrystallization, tensile, and creep-rupture behavior of high-purity tantalum and two interstitial-containing tantalum alloys have been determined. After a 75 per cent cold reduction, tantalum was completely recrystallized on annealing 1 hr at 1200 C; this temperature was increased slightly by adding 560 ppm oxygen. Tensile properties up to 500 C were determined. It was shown that the influence of interstitials in causing discontinuous yielding could be correlated with diffusivities. The moderate (25,000 to 32,000 psi) tensile strength of unalloyed tantalum can be increased by cold working and by minor additions of interstitials. The creep resistance of tantalum is increased by interstitial additions at short times and moderate temperatures, but is relatively unaffected at higher temperatures and longer times. Cold work remains effective in strengthening tantalum up to 750 C.
