This book was released on 2004 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of nanomaterials has introduced a new dimension in applications of energetic and reactive materials. A fundamental understanding of their synthesis mechanisms, atomic- and molecular-scale structural characteristics, and an evaluation of properties combined with modeling of the limits to those properties are required to realize the full potential of energetic and reactive nanomaterials. Many techniques have been recently developed that make it possible to exploit the benefits of the "nano" structure and design materials with desired energy release rates and energy densities, while they also improve their safety, reliability and load-bearing capability. Advances in modeling and characterization have made it possible to determine mechanisms controlling the thermal, chemical and mechanical behavior of nanomaterials. This volume brings together researchers from around the world to assess fundamental studies on synthesis, characterization of structure, and evaluation of properties of energetic/reactive nanomaterials. Applications such as new propellant formulations, underwater detonation developments, biomedical research, and combustion of nanolayered metal films for cladding materials are featured. Topics include: applications and toxicology; synthesis; characterization; characterization and theory; theory and modeling; and general discussion.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on recent advances in the synthesis of nanoparticles, their characterization, and their applications in different fields such as catalysis, photonics, magnetism, and nanomedicine. Nanoparticles receive a large share of the worldwide research activity in contemporary materials science. This is witnessed by the number of scientific papers with "nanoparticle" as a keyword, increasing linearly in the last 10 years from about 16,000 in 2009 to about 50,000 in 2019. This impressive widespread interest stems from the basic science of nanoparticles, which constitute a bridge between the molecular and the bulk worlds, as well as from their technological applications. The preparation of nanoparticles is a crossroad of materials science where chemists, physicists, engineers, and even biologists frequently meet, leading to a continuous improvement of existing techniques and to the invention of new methods. The reader interested in nanoparticles synthesis and properties will here find a valuable selection of scientific cases that cannot cover all methods and applications relevant to the field, but still provide an updated overview on the fervent research activity focused on nanoparticles.

Book excerpt: Energetic Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Characterization, and Application provides researchers in academia and industry the most novel and meaningful knowledge on nanoenergetic materials, covering the fundamental chemical aspects from synthesis to application. This valuable resource fills the current gap in book publications on nanoenergetics, the energetic nanomaterials that are applied in explosives, gun and rocket propellants, and pyrotechnic devices, which are expected to yield improved properties, such as a lower vulnerability towards shock initiation, enhanced blast, and environmentally friendly replacements of currently used materials. The current lack of a systematic and easily available book in this field has resulted in an underestimation of the input of nanoenergetic materials to modern technologies. This book is an indispensable resource for researchers in academia, industry, and research institutes dealing with the production and characterization of energetic materials all over the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reducing the dimensions of contiguous matter, down to the nanometer scale, confines the electronic and vibrational wavefunctions and results in unique properties which open up a wide vista of potential applications in optics, mechanics, electrical engineering, magnetic devices, catalysis and biomedicine. Nanostructures, characterized by having at least one dimension in the nanometer range, are considered to be a bridge between single molecules and their bulk counterparts. The challenge for nanotechnology is to achieve perfect control of the nanoscale-related properties; which obviously requires correlating the parameters of synthesis with the resultant nanostructures. Nanostructures are also ideal subjects for computer simulation and modeling: in computations related to nanomaterials, one deals with a spatial scaling ranging from a few nanometers to a few micrometers and a time-scaling ranging from a few femto-seconds (fs) to 1 second - with a limit of accuracy better than 1 kcal mol-1. This special-topic volume describes the novel computational and experimental approaches developed in order to resolve questions concerning the growth of nanostructures, their characterization and modeling. Motivated by the increasing need to synthesize and understand the properties of materials at the nanoscale, this issue is very timely and is an important step towards improving the knowledge of how nanomaterials can be made ever more useful to modern technologies. The book, divided into sections on Computational Nanomaterials and Experimental Nanomaterials, comprises a collection of ten original review/papers covering experimental approaches, theoretical analysis and numerical models. Seven papers are devoted to the growth and characterization of nanomaterials, while the other three deal with theoretical approaches to understanding their properties. Another attractive feature of the book is the common aim of these papers of achieving a deeper understanding of the underlying functionality of the properties of nanomaterials.
