This book was released on 1983 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major purpose of the 1980 main channel border (MCB) investigations was to develop basic information on the physical and biological characteristics of the MCB habitat in the Upper Mississippi River. This information was needed to properly assess the St. Paul District, Corps of Engineers, operation and maintenance activities associated with the 9-foot navigation channel project. A survey (current velocity and direction, substrate type, and water depths) was conducted for the entire MCB of pool 5a. The MCB of pool 5A was selected for study because pool 5A was one of the shorter pools under the jurisdiction of the St. Paul District, because it has a diversity of MCB habitat types, and because a Corps of Engineers service base in Fountain City, WI., provides easy access and work areas. From the results of the physical survey, a physical habitat classification system was developed that considered general substrate type, general habitat, current velocity, and water depths. From the intersections of these four factors, 18 physical habitat types were determined to be present in sufficient abundance to warrant further study. Macroinvertebrate and fisheries surveys were conducted at 18 study areas in August and September. Each of the 18 areas represented one of the 19 habitat types. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.
Book Synopsis The 1993 Flood on the Mississippi River in Illinois by : Nani G. Bhowmik
Download or read book The 1993 Flood on the Mississippi River in Illinois written by Nani G. Bhowmik and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lessons learned from this flood focus on the performance of the levees, governmental responses, the effects of flood fighting, change in stages due to levee breaches, flood modeling, and the lack of information dissemination to the public on the technical aspects of the flood. These lessons point out information gaps and the need for research in the areas of hydraulics and hydrology, meteorology, sediment transport and sedimentation, surface and ground-water interactions, water quality, and levees. The report presents a comprehensive summary of the 1993 flood as far as climate, hydrology, and hydraulics are concerned.
