The book speaks out for the whole Azerbaijani people expressing its benevolent nature and good will. The 90s of the last century marked Azerbaijans history with independence from the Soviet regime and greatly contributed to introduce "My Road of Life" as one of the cult books of those times, spreading thoughts and spirit of liberty, independence, nations self-governance. Fighters for independence used to came to The Liberty Square in Baku with this book in their hands to demand the end of the authoritarian Soviet dominance. The book encouraged the young generation of those times to rise and wage the just struggle for future and signaled the complete destruction of the humiliating Soviet dictatorship. Today "My Road of Life" is a versed relic echoing the ardent freedom-loving spirit of the Azerbaijani people on their long way to hard-fought victory.

Book excerpt: The decisions that we make, as small as they may be, set the course of our life. When Nora Clayton, a magnificent executive vice president of an important pharmaceutical Company in New York, has to fire ten thousand workers who will be substituted with sophisticated machines, she triggers the rage of Bonnie Larson, a woman who is invisible to society, but who comes from a long line of evil witches. After a long time of not having used her magic, she decides to curse Nora, who will watch how her life takes a 180o turn. The people she shares her comfortable life with don’t recognize her, her luxurious apartment on the Upper East Side no longer belongs to her and the only option she is left with is returning to Kutztown (Pennsylvania), her hometown, and to redo the inexistent relationship with her mother and live a life she had not chosen. A story about parallel worlds, about the decisions we don’t make, about memories, life, love and, in the end, fate. A lesson on life in every page.

Book excerpt: Street Life in London (1877-78), by journalist Adolphe Smith and photographer John Thomson, aimed to reveal by the innovative use of photography and essays the conditions of a life of poverty in London. Now regarded as a pioneering photo-text and a foundational work of socially conscious photography - "one of the most significant and far-reaching photobooks in the medium's history" (The Photobook: A History) - Street Life in London failed to achieve commercial success in its own time. In this groundbreaking book, we see the start, but not the conclusion, of a conversation between text and image in the service of education, reportage and social justice. This newly designed and typeset edition contains the full text and makes available to a contemporary audience Thomson's powerful images in their original size and rich colour.

Book excerpt: After the end of World War II, the American road trip began appearing prominently in literature, music, movies, and photography. Many photographers embarked on trips across the U.S. in order to create work, including Robert Frank, whose seminal 1955 road trip resulted in The Americans. However, he was preceded by Edward Weston, who traveled across the country taking pictures to illustrate Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass; Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose 1947 trip through the American South and into the West was published in the early 1950s in Harper's Bazaar; and Ed Ruscha, whose road trips between Los Angeles and Oklahoma later became Twentysix Gasoline Stations. Hundreds of photographers have continued the tradition of the photographic road trip on down to the present, from Stephen Shore to Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs. The Open Road considers the photographic road trip as a genre in and of itself, and presents the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse. The book features David Campany's introduction to the genre and eighteen chapters presented chronologically, each exploring one American road trip in depth through a portfolio of images and informative texts, highlighting some of the most important bodies of work made on the road from The Americans to present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking history of one of the greatest ever sieges. Masterfully brought to life by a leading expert using original Russian and German source material. '[An] excellent account.' - Richard Overy, The Telegraph This new history of the first two years of this crucial battle for the heart and soul of Russia is the first in over a decade and also the first to look comprehensively at the wider military strategies of both sides. At a huge cost, the Red Army and the civilian population of Leningrad ultimately endured a bitter 900-day siege, struggling against constant bombing, shelling, and starvation. Throughout the siege, Soviet forces tried to break the German lines and restore contact with the garrison. To Besiege a City charts the first of these offensives which began in January 1942 and was followed by repeated assaults. Acclaimed Eastern Front historian Prit Buttar details how although the Red Army suffered huge casualties in the swampy and forested terrain, the German infantry divisions were also steadily eroded. Indeed, by keeping control of parts of the shores of Lake Ladoga, the Soviet Union was able to sustain Leningrad through the winters of the siege via the 'road of life', constructed across the frozen lake. This epic history details the dramatic race to create the road across the ice and first-hand accounts from both Soviet and German soldiers, many never previously translated, bring the horrific series of battles and assaults to life. Ultimately the determination of the defenders to hold out during this first phase of the siege and the desperate attempts to break it became a hugely significant part of Russian wartime history. The echoes of the battle persist to this day helping to define both a country and its politics. There is no better time to fully understand this history and To Besiege a City is the most comprehensive account to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the world of Gary Yordon—former politician, part-time television host, and accidental newspaper columnist. When Yordon's world began giving him stories too good not to immortalize, he sent one to a friend at a newspaper. Two years and seventy-five columns later, he had a rabidly loyal readership. Their persistent requests led to this collection. There is nothing above Yordon's satire, including his lack of home repair skills, addiction to Steven Seagal movies, and kidney stone intolerance. (Okay, maybe Yordon is normal in that regard.) He admits to actively resisting the temptation to write excessively about his mother, who is "a living, breathing, Neil Simon play." "My ninety-year-old mother is a fierce shopper. Put a parachute on sale and Mom's all over it because it's not about need, it's about price. She'd buy a show pony to get a free harness. She passed the shopping gene to me. If I hear the phrase 'as seen on TV,' I know I'm in trouble. At 3 a.m., the Leopard Print Cat Tunnel for $19.95 is too good to pass up. Now all I need is a cat." Tender moments are tucked away in this book too, especially those related to Yordon's relationship with his profoundly challenged son, Zachary. Learn more about Gary Yordon at ZPRgroup.com.

Book excerpt: This National Book Award finalist is a revealing and beautifully written memoir and family history from acclaimed photographer Sally Mann. In this groundbreaking book, a unique interplay of narrative and image, Mann's preoccupation with family, race, mortality, and the storied landscape of the American South are revealed as almost genetically predetermined, written into her DNA by the family history that precedes her. Sorting through boxes of family papers and yellowed photographs she finds more than she bargained for: "deceit and scandal, alcohol, domestic abuse, car crashes, bogeymen, clandestine affairs, dearly loved and disputed family land . . . racial complications, vast sums of money made and lost, the return of the prodigal son, and maybe even bloody murder." In lyrical prose and startlingly revealing photographs, she crafts a totally original form of personal history that has the page-turning drama of a great novel but is firmly rooted in the fertile soil of her own life.

Book excerpt: In this deluxe commemorative edition, LIFE's editors focus on the publication's achievements more tightly than they ever have before: This is truly the best of everything LIFE has accomplished. In these pages are the best war photos ever taken for LIFE; the best photo essays ever to grace our pages (including the works of Capa and Parks and Smith); the loveliest pictures from Hollywood (in fact, the best pictures of Marilyn Monroe ever taken by such as Halsmann, Eisenstaedt and her dear friend Milton Greene), the best sports pictures, the funniest pictures we ever ran. The best pictures from the space race, and the most significant pictures to the human race, including Lennart Nilsson's "Life Before Birth." This is a premium volume of LIFE, and beyond its 200-plus pages, which include a review of every LIFE cover ever published, there is, included here, the ultimate premium: The first-ever LIFE issue, with the Margaret Bourke-White photograph of the Fort Peck Dam on the cover, reprinted in its entirety, at actual size (which was really big 10 1/2" x 14") and able to be detached. We've come a long way: We, you, those places, LIFE itself. This book tells, and celebrates, that voyage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " We all take many roads in life and can recall many of those visual images. If you really pay attention, they speak to us in metaphors, and reflect what we desire and or perhaps regret. I have been taking photos since the age of five, when I got my first camera from my father, an accomplished photographer himself, a whole new world opened for me. As I took photos throughout my life I could see my life and others, through the camera lens in a different perspective. After my mother's death in 2010, I went on certain roads to help me to look back, to re-visit and to look ahead while asking some of the important questions in life. I fell in love all over again and in a new way, with taking the ""image"" and experiencing this creative process. Next time you stop to examine your own journey, think about this - remember how we were told to just ""follow the yellow brick road"" and you would find your way back home again? I knew that if I just kept going on the roads that I choose - my own yellow brick road - that I would learn life lessons along the way and find some answers that I needed. My answers - and that is what matters. Looking back, I see that I have taken the road less traveled and even the long way around on most of these roads. That has brought me to today, to me, and that is my home. The lesson is true, I always had it, I just had to figure it out for myself too. There are so many roads in life and many of us have the luxury to take whatever road or roads we choose. Some roads are winding, some are straight; some are safe and some dangerous; and some are easy and some incredibility difficult. Some roads you can't even see the end but you have faith in the choice you made and you take it anyway. While these roads are far from easy, be sure to stay open to all of the roads you take and the turns you make in life. Don't forget to take note of the stop signs you ignore, and continue to learn each time. This will guide to your next road and lead you to your next destination in life. I am offering some of these roads as a brief photographic essay for your own journey. I have traveled some of these roads alone and on some roads others have been along with me. There are those who I wished could have been with me but they were always there in my thoughts and in my heart along the way. I found myself again, while traveling on all of these roads, which has truly been a gift. I hope you enjoy seeing just some of these roads that I have traveled, and I wish for you some insight from each photo I took. May you rejoice in the life metaphors each one offers you. Where will your next road take you? Brooke Parker Higgins -- ""Perhaps he knew, as I did not, that the Earth was made round so that we would not see too far down the road."" -- Karen Blixen, Out of Africa"
