Book excerpt: Excerpt from Threshold Photo and Electroproduction of Pions From Nuclei To find the amplitude from a single nucleon, one usually starts by considering which relativistic Feynman diagrams are important in the particular energy region under consideration. For the case of a purely electromagnetic interaction as in electron scattering, photo or electro disintegration, or Compton scattering, one can use perturbation theory and quantum field theory to give the appropriate Feynman diagrams to a particular order in the coupling constant. However, in photo or electro production of pions, we now have electromagnetic and strong interactions, and since the coupling constant in strong interactions is large, the perturbation expansion in powers of the coupling constant will not con verge. In spite of this fact, the lowest order term in the expansion using pseudovector pion-nuclear coupling, gives results which under cer tain conditions agree very well with experiment and with the low energy theorem derived from the theory of the pcac (partially conserved axial current) Therefore, we will use the lowest order perturbation term as our model for the threshold photo pion production amplitude off of a nucleon. Book excerpt: Two years ago, at the 12th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics held here in Snowbird, the authors presented WA80 limits on direct photon production in 200-GeV 32S + Au collisions. It was found that the results were consistent (within 1[sigma]) with the absence of an excess of photons over those that can be accounted for by the two-photon decay branches of [pi]° and [eta] mesons and by the small photon contributions from other radiative decays. They are in the process of finalizing the direct-photon production results from collisions of lead nuclei at 158 GeV/nucleon. The author briefly discusses the status of the analysis and gives some preliminary results at the end of this talk. However, most of this presentation is concerned with a very different aspect of the photon measurements: distributions of neutral pions. In contrast to direct photons which probe initial collision conditions, hadrons, such as neutral pions, interact strongly and decouple late in the reaction evolution and, thus, provide information concerning the system at freeze out. Transverse momentum spectra at low and intermediate p{sub T} relate to thermodynamic and hydrodynamic descriptions of the hot, dense systems. In addition, the high-p{sub T} region reflects the hard-scattering regime and may help one understand initial-state particle production by forming a bridge to proton-proton and proton-nucleus results. It follows that it is essential that the [pi]° measurements cover a large p{sub T} range.

The review articles were submitted after the sym posium, and there was considerable editing and cross referen cing with the aim of achieving a greater overall unity than ordinarily found in conference proceedings. Photopion Nuclear Physics, as the name suggests, combines two of the most active areas of current intermediate energy nuclear physics research - electromagnetic phenomena as studied by means of electron scattering and photonuclear pro cesses, and mesonic effects in nuclei. The potential value of photopion studies as a complement to electron scattering for the study of spin-isospin aspects of nuclear transitions has been widely recognized for about a decade, thanks to the the oretical work at such institutions as Stanford and Catholic Universities. In fact, some of this theoretical work was done in anticipation of the advent of the new high duty cycle and good energy resolution electron linacs. The potential for using this reaction to study mesonic effects was not as broad ly addressed at that time. However, as seen in the following pages of these proceedings, that situation has dramatically changed.

The theory is compared with an experiment of Goodwin, Anderson, and Kenney that shows the dependence of the number of decay gammas from pi /sup 0/ mesons photo- produced from various nuclei as a function of the atomic number at 45, 90, and 135 degrees for incident photon energies from threshold to 350 Mev. The dependence measured near threshold and at 45 degrees does not agree with the simple theory nor is it consistent with partial elastic production. By a method of Placzek and Wick the corrections to the simple theory are estimated, and found to be large near threshold. These corrections may explain the discrepancy between the theory and the experimental results. No information about the nuclear-pair correlation function is obtained. The impulse approximation is used to calculate the relative ratio of the radiative absorption rate of pi /sup -/ mesons absorbed in hydrogen and deuterium from an atomic s state. The calculated value of the ratio T = R(pi /sup -/ + d yields 2n + gamma)/R(pi /sup -/ + p yields n + gamma) is 0.83 plus or minus 0.08. The experimental value is 0.41 plus or minus 0.06. The closure approximation is used to evaluate T. By a method due to Placzek the error due to the closure approximation is shown to be small. (auth).
