Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photography Made Easy For more than twenty years it has been my daily task to reply to enquiries made by amateur photographers, the majority of them beginners, each morning's post bring ing from half a dozen upwards. No one could do this for long without knowing fairly accurately what it is which the novice wishes to know, or ought to know; and, in writing this book, the questions put to me have been constantly in mind. If the directions given in some cases seem needlessly explicit, I ask any reader who is impatient, to believe that there are other would-be photographers who have found less explicit instructions puzzling to them. Mere verbiage I hate as much as anyone but experience shows that brevity is often bought at the expense of clearness. And that it is very difficult to write even so little as a single sentence of practical instruction in photography which anyone with no previous knowledge whatever of the subject is able to under stand fully. Most of the book is limited strictly to practical photo graphy; but the two chapters on how a lens works have been included because, although they do not come strictly under that heading, they may indirectly help the user of a lens to understand its principles, and to apply that know ledge in his work. So many seem to think the working of a lens a very difficult thing to grasp, and ask questions which a careful reading of those two chapters should make quite unnecessary. Those who do not feel tempted to go into the subject can pass them over and keep to the strictly practical side of the subject. It only remains to add that, while the book has been founded upon the Lessons for Beginners, which have been a weekly feature in The Amateur Photographer and Photo graphy for the last ten years, it is not an exact reprint of any of them, but has been gathered from many, and revised and modified to give it its present form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Portraiture Made Easy The Little Books on photography of which this is one are the outcome of The Practical Lessons for Beginners which have appeared every week since July, 1904, in The Amateur Photo grapher, and are still continuing. The unparalleled expression of appreciation with which those Lessons have met leaves little room for doubt that there are very many who would find such plain talks on every-day photographic practice useful in book form. To merely reprint the Lessons from The Amateur Photographer would hardly have been sufficient, and the subjects dealt with, therefore, have been en tirely, re-written. In the following pages it is hoped that the beginner will find practical help in making por traits in an ordinary living-room; but the reader is advised to procure the other Little Books which are uniform with this, the subjects of which are: How to Ensure Correct Exposure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic French food is hotter than ever. But one thing hasn’t changed—few of us have the time, the patience, the technique, or the cream and butter allowance to tackle the classics as presented by Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The good news is—we don’t need to. For the past 40 years Richard Grausman, America’s premier culinary teacher, has been training American chefs in a simpler, better way of French cooking, and in French Classics Made Easy—a refreshed and updated edition of his original collection, At Home with the French Classics—he shares all of his extraordinary innovations and techniques. Golden soufflés in ten minutes. A light and luscious chocolate mousse that can be made as a cake, a chocolate roll, soufflé, or pudding. Plus Cassoulet, Boeuf Bourguignon, Coq au Vin, Bouillabaisse, Poached Salmon with Beurre Blanc—in all, 250 impeccably clear, step-by-step recipes in range of anyone who knows how to boil water or dice an onion. When a step isn’t critical, Grausman eliminates it. If something can be done in advance, he does it. Plus he’s cut the amount of butter, cream, egg yolks, salt, and sugar; the result is health-conscious recipes that don’t compromise the essential nature of the dish. Techniques are illustrated throughout in line drawings. It’s the grandness of French cuisine, made accessible for both entertaining and everyday meals.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Step in Photography: Tells How to Make Photographs In presenting this little book to the reader I assume two things first, that he knows absolutely nothing about photography; and second, that he is anxious to become acquainted with the art. Not only shall I suppose him to be ignorant of the very first principle, but I will take it for granted that he does not even know the mean ing of the various terms used by. Photographers, and will take the liberty of explaining. As it occurs, each word that is'used by them in a special sense. All trades and professions use words in a special way, these being generally known as trade or technical terms. Now, technical terms are usually not very appropriate, for as a rule they do not express exactly what is understood by the general meaning of the word, and such being the case, I feel I shall be pardoned if I assume the reader to be completely ignorant of the meaning of the various technical terms used in photog raphy. It has gone as far as it can go. This was of course the popular verdict; but there were practical men too who were of opinion that little more was to be expected from it. It 'would be hard to find the man who would say as much to-day. So many advances has Photo graphy made of late - so important has it become as an aid to general science - that it is not easy to over-estimate its claims on the attention of investigators, or to say in what direction its next conquests may not be achieved. This was the compliment paid to stereo s00pic pictures when they were first made, so realistic did they seem. From the dim outline, the faint image discovered by Daguerre, photography has risen to be an art. Instead of nu real likenesses, portraits can now be made which speak through the perfectly reproduced expression of the face, and the senti ment indicated by the pose. Marvelously, too, are the beau ties and glories of nature mirrored. The latest and most rapid advance in the art is due to the discovery of the sensitiveness of a gelatine film. This knowl edge has been practically applied in the introduction of plates prepared with such a coating. These are called dry plates, to distinguish them from plates which must pass through the silver bath and be used while wet. Gelatine plates are now in general use for taking pictures of outdoor scenes, such as landscapes, houses, groups of people, and all animated subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Photographer Obody who has once come under the spell Of the camera, and has so far penetrated into the mysteries of photography as to be able to expose with a reasonably quiet mind as to the ultimate nature of his negatives, can ever there after free himself completely from its fascination. I have been under the spell for nearly thirty years, but my camera is as good a companion as ever, and photography is as entertaining in 1914 as in 1885. And incalculably easier also. The great reduction in its difficulties and complications has made the camera vastly more popular; but at the same time it has had the curious and unforeseen result that, comparatively speaking, there are fewer amateurs to whom its use is their chief hobby. Formerly success was only to be attained by concentrating one's hole attention on the processes employed, and photography was the pursuit of a few enthusiasts. Today, while almost every one photographs, there has not been SO vast an increase in the number of enthusiasts, although the increase has been a large one. Many have been led by its facility to take it up casually, and have found that even in that way it will furnish a great deal Of pleasure and Of attractive and useful occupation. Some Of these are led further and further in its pursuit. They find that in spite of hand-cameras, mechanical development, and gaslight papers, there is still plenty of scope for the exercise Of personal Skill there are plenty Of difficulties to confront and triumphs to achieve, and that as a pastime an inexhaustible field opens out before them as they proceed. To such a field the later chapters of this book may serve as an introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amateur Guide in Photography On no piece of apparatus connected with photography has there been more experiments tried and thought expended, to improve and condense, than on this important, yet bothersome article. Yet the most satisfactory forms are to-day made on the principle of those constructed ten years ago. The Feather weight and Compact Tripods are sufficiently rigid for all sizes of cameras up to 6% X above which the Combination should be used. The English Folding Tripod is a less expensive form yet very rigid and easily set up. It does not possess the advantage of being adjustable to different heights. It is sufficiently rigid for all sizes of cameras up to 8 x 10. In the selection of a Tripod, it is wise to select the best. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Photography N umerous changes have been made in this edition. Matters become obsolete have been suppressed, and improvements in the processes generally practiced have been described. We have not noticed; however, any of the new processes in printing, Which have lately made their appearance. The processes of carbon print ingvie consider not yet sufficiently practical to be of use to the professional photographer. We thought of being able to give a method superior to the ordinary printing process, and even, on this account, retarded the publication of this edition; but the process in question turned out to - have been greatly overrated. We refer here to the Wothlotype process, the appear ance of which created such an excitement in the pho tographic community. The results obtained by this process do not meet the anticipation of photographers. Prints made by it possess no advantage over those made in the ordinary way, neither ln quality, facility of manipulation, cost, nor permanency. Our aim being to bring forth a guide for practical photographers, we have thus omitted a description of it, and devoted our Space to objects of more direct value. Read; make notes; carry them; and consult them frequently at the appropriate time - these are excellent rules to follow. How To Study This Book The method used in studying any book is very important, and especially is this true in Photography. If you attempt to digest too much of the material herein, at a few readings, you will soon relegate the book to the attic in despair, therefore, go about it correctly. It is well to read through the whole book at the start, if you get well interested, but no notes whatsoever should be made at this reading. Your second, third, fourth, and further readings are the readings on which to make your notes. For the beginner, all he will need for a while is written in the first eleven chapters. The subject-matter is given with the object of making it just as easy and simple as possible for the beginner, therefore, every step is laid out in a simple manner and with an eye to the order in which the different steps should be studied. Naturally a description of cameras and lenses belongs in the opening pages of the book, but it does not necessarily imply that the beginner should thoroughly learn these principles before taking a picture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picture Taking and Picture Making This little volume will not tell everything about photography. It will trouble the reader with few technicalities and no theories. In it we shall simply endeavor to start the amateur in the right direction. His own ambitions, tastes and energies will guide him afterwards. Frankly, we shall recommend our own goods in the chapters on apparatus, etc., which are to follow. Years of experience have given us ideas as to how a camera should be made so that it will be best adapted to the amateur's use. In these pages we give to you the results of that experience; in our work shop we build Kodaks in accordance with the ideas this experience has given us. This book and our manufactures are, therefore, in perfect harmony. We do not, however, confine ourselves to goods of our own make, full directions, for instance, being given for working the Platinum, Carbon, Gum Bi-chromate and plain paper processes, none of which use our goods. The other directions for the use of standard goods apply to those of other manufacturers as well as our own. Some of the instructions herein given will already have been read in our manuals by the Kodak owners, yet it is necessary to repeat them for the benefit of those who have not yet made a photographic start, but at the same time the book will contain much information not to be obtained from a mere manual.
