There are delights and surprises aplenty, including a Roman temple in the suburbs of Bournemouth; a folly nestled within the fern garden of an ancestral manor; a classic cottage garden festooned with roses, honeysuckle and clematis; the spectacular subtropical coastal gardens of Abbotsbury; and the Arcadian landscape at Minterne, where a hillside of Himalayan rhododendrons and azaleas looks out over a chain of lakes, waterfalls and streams. Written in close consultation with the owners of the gardens, Roger Lane's informative text details the history of each garden and its development under the current owners, and then focuses on design, planting and the garden's relationship with the surrounding landscape. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography is the first comprehensive encyclopedia of world photography up to the beginning of the twentieth century. It sets out to be the standard, definitive reference work on the subject for years to come. Its coverage is global – an important ‘first’ in that authorities from all over the world have contributed their expertise and scholarship towards making this a truly comprehensive publication. The Encyclopedia presents new and ground-breaking research alongside accounts of the major established figures in the nineteenth century arena. Coverage includes all the key people, processes, equipment, movements, styles, debates and groupings which helped photography develop from being ‘a solution in search of a problem’ when first invented, to the essential communication tool, creative medium, and recorder of everyday life which it had become by the dawn of the twentieth century. The sheer breadth of coverage in the 1200 essays makes the Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography an essential reference source for academics, students, researchers and libraries worldwide.
Book Synopsis Dorset from the Sea by : Steve Belasco
Download or read book Dorset from the Sea written by Steve Belasco and published by Veloce Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many publications highlight the beauty of this area, both from land and air, but this is the first to feature photographs shot entirely from the coast's best viewpoint - the sea. Few people are fortunate enough to spend time on Dorset's coastal waters, but this volume enables everyone to appreciate what it's like to be 'out there looking in'. Enjoy a boat tour with a photographer plainly in love with his home turf (or should that be surf?). Enjoy the majesty of West Dorset's sandstone cliffs glowing orange at sunset, the 18 miles of Chesil Beach pebbles and the harsh beauty of Portland, source of the stone that built London. Cruise across Weymouth Bay with its myriad water users, from jetskiers to 100,000-tonne tankers (not to mention the dolphins). In Purbeck, appreciate outside views of famous Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, the shale cliffs around Kimmeridge and the quarries beyond St Alban's Head. Finally, get up close and personal with Old Harry and his family, the stunning chalk stacks that form the easternmost, and youngest, stretch of the Jurassic Coast.
Book Synopsis Photographing Papua by : Max Quanchi
Download or read book Photographing Papua written by Max Quanchi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographing Papua is a study of photography in the public domain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It argues that southeastern New Guinea, known as British New Guinea and then as Papua when it became an Australian colony, was created as a geographical place through visual representation in illustrated magazines and newspapers, lavishly illustrated travelogues and mission hagiography, serial encyclopedia, lantern slides and postcards. Readers :knew" Papua because many thousands of black and white photographs of Papuans, villages and material culture rapidly swamped the reading public once the process of halftone, newsprint reproduction became possible. In an innovative and breakthrough fashion Photographing Papua switches attention from a few well known prints in museums and archives, in some cases repeatedly reproduced, but mostly rarely seen outside of scientific and scholarly circles. It deals instead with thousands of photographs, often used in ways not intended when the photograph was taken, but which editors and publishers (and subsequent photographers) gradually made conform to an iconographic imperative, a sort of abbreviated visual gallery of "natives" and a quick-access pathway to the actual and imagined lives of Papuans in the "last Unknown" as New Guinea was titled. It is a study of representation, colonialism, cross-cultural encounters and the early world of illustrated media and photo-journalism.
