This book was released on 2005-06-29 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written specially for practical amateur astronomers who not only want to observe, but want to know and understand the details of exactly what they are looking at. Presents an up-to-date detailed description of the objects, their physics and their evolution (part one); and then (part two) to consider how to observe and record them successfully. Delivers a wealth of information for all levels of amateur observers, from the beginner to the experienced; it is equally fascinating for practical astronomers, and also for those who simply want to find out more about these unusual star systems.

Download or read book Stargazers written by Storm Dunlop and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strong and effective links between amateur and professional astronomers were brought into prominence at Colloquium 98 of the International Astronomical Union. Amateur observations of such objects as comets, variable stars and novae serve to complement work done with expensive instrumentation by professionals. They fill gaps left by big science and often contribute significantly to astronomical knowledge. The book covers: - historical contributions by amateurs, - observational methods, problems and instrumentation, - results of amateur observations, - popularization. Overall, an exciting and enthusiastic account of stargazing, the hobby that can turn into science.

Book Synopsis Astronomical and Astrophysical Objectives of Sub-Milliarcsecond Optical Astrometry by : Erik Høg
Download or read book Astronomical and Astrophysical Objectives of Sub-Milliarcsecond Optical Astrometry written by Erik Høg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astrometry is on the threshold of great changes due to the fact that this decade, alone, is witnessing an improvement of stellar positions equivalent to the total improvement of the previous two centuries. The Hipparcos Satellite has concluded its observations, and the catalog is in preparation. Preliminary results assure that the Hipparcos catalog will provide positions, parallaxes and annual proper motions for over 100,000 stars with accuracies of 1.5 milliarcseconds. In addition, the Tycho catalog will provide positions of about 30 milliarcseconds accuracy for over 1 million stars, and annual proper motions with 3 milliarcsecond accuracy will subsequently be ob tained by means of first epoch positions from the Astrographic Catalog. Optical interferometers on the ground are beginning operation, and these instruments can provide observational accuracies of approximately one milliarcsecond. Also, the traditional reference frame based on the Fun damental Catalog of bright stars is being replaced by the extragalactic ref erence frame, based on radio sources with accuracies of one milliarcsecond. Thus, astrometry will change from a fundamental reference frame defined in terms of the dynamical reference frame of the solar system with accuracies of 100 milliarcseconds to a space-fixed, extragalactic reference frame with accuracies of one milliarcsecond. Future astrometric observations should be in the 1 -100 milliarcsecond accuracy range. There are a number of concepts for future astrometric instruments in space. Most of these can provide sub-milliarcsecond astrometric accuracies.
Book Synopsis An Anthology of Visual Double Stars by : Bob Argyle
Download or read book An Anthology of Visual Double Stars written by Bob Argyle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern telescopes of even modest aperture can show thousands of double stars. Many are faint and unremarkable but hundreds are worth searching out. Veteran double-star observer Bob Argyle and his co-authors take a close-up look at their selection of 175 of the night sky's most interesting double and multiple stars. The history of each system is laid out from the original discovery to what we know at the present time about the stars. Wide-field finder charts are presented for each system along with plots of the apparent orbits and predicted future positions for the orbital systems. Recent measurements of each system are included which will help you to decide whether they can be seen in your telescope, as well as giving advice on the aperture needed. Double star observers of all levels of experience will treasure the level of detail in this guide to these jewels of the night sky.
