This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomer Gerard P. Kuiper ignored the traditional boundaries of his subject. Using telescopes and the laboratory, he made the solar system a familiar, intriguing place. “It is not astronomy,” complained his colleagues, and they were right. Kuiper had created a new discipline we now call planetary science. Kuiper was an acclaimed astronomer of binary stars and white dwarfs when he accidentally discovered that Titan, the massive moon of Saturn, had an atmosphere. This turned our understanding of planetary atmospheres on its head, and it set Kuiper on a path of staggering discoveries: Pluto was not a planet, planets around other stars were common, some asteroids were primary while some were just fragments of bigger asteroids, some moons were primary and some were captured asteroids or comets, the atmosphere of Mars was carbon dioxide, and there were two new moons in the sky, one orbiting Uranus and one orbiting Neptune. He produced a monumental photographic atlas of the Moon at a time when men were landing on our nearest neighbor, and he played an important part in that effort. He also created some of the world’s major observatories in Hawai‘i and Chile. However, most remarkable was that the keys to his success sprang from his wartime activities, which led him to new techniques. This would change everything. Sears shows a brilliant but at times unpopular man who attracted as much dislike as acclaim. This in-depth history includes some of the twentieth century’s most intriguing scientists, from Harold Urey to Carl Sagan, who worked with—and sometimes against—the father of modern planetary science. Now, as NASA and other space agencies explore the solar system, they take with them many of the ideas and concepts first described by Gerard P. Kuiper.

Book excerpt: “Might be just the book to bring out your inner astronomer . . . over 250 pages of breathtaking images from the past 50 years of NASA’s space exploration.” —Parade Preface by Bill Nye This magnificent volume offers a rich visual tour of the planets in our solar system. More than two-hundred breathtaking photographs from the archives of NASA are paired with extended captions detailing the science behind some of our cosmic neighborhood’s most extraordinary phenomena. Images of newly discovered areas of Jupiter, fiery volcanoes on Venus, and many more reveal the astronomical marvels of space in engrossing detail. Anyone with an interest in science, astronomy, and the mysteries of the universe will delight in this awe-inspiring guide to the wonders of the solar system. “As you turn through the pages, you’re hit with true moments of awe, photos that remind you the power of nature extends beyond our own planet.” —Houston Chronicle “Breathtaking pictures show the otherworldly magic of the solar system . . . The images are at once humbling and uplifting: Here in the black void of space is Saturn’s frozen moon, Mimas, white and pitted like a galactic golf ball; here is the tiny golden orb called Io, casting a shadow in a perfect inky circle on the marbled surface of Jupiter; here is the great sun, flames spurting from its surface like plumes.” —The Wall Street Journal “[A] gorgeous photographic tour of space . . . The collection is a remarkable reminder of how much has been learned about the planets over the past few decades, solving many mysteries yet introducing many more.” —Publishers Weekly

Each plate is accompanied by a star map of the identical area, which identifies the main stars of the constituent constellations as well as other interesting astronomical objects. In addition to this detail, Sir Patrick Moore has written a commentary for each plate that highlights the stars and objects of interest to observers equipped with binoculars and that includes detailed tabular information on astronomical objects of the region. The resulting double-page spread provides an invaluable reference for the amateur astronomer, detailing the constellations and other heavenly bodies of interest that are observable with the naked eye, binoculars, or a small telescope.

Book excerpt: Edward Emerson Barnard's Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way was originally published in two volumes in 1927. Together these volumes contained a wealth of information, including photographic plates of the most interesting portions of the Milky Way, descriptive text, charts, and data. Only 700 copies were printed, making the original edition a collector's item. Reproduced in print for the first time, this edition combines both volumes of Barnard's Atlas. It directly replicates Barnard's text, and contains high resolution images of the original photographic plates and charts, reordered so that they can be seen together. It also includes a biography of Barnard and his work, a Foreword and Addendum by Gerald Orin Dobek describing the importance of the Atlas and additions to this volume, and a pull-out section with a mosaic of all 50 plates combined in a single panorama.

Book excerpt: The Cambridge Photographic Guide to the Planets includes a broad selection of the latest images of the planets, moons, comets, and asteroids of the Earth's Solar System. Beginning with a comprehensive introduction to the planetary system, its origin and its evolution, physicist Frederick Taylor devotes each chapter to a different planet or Solar System body, with a thorough presentation of its moons and rings, and incorporates images from planetary missions and explanatory captions. Having worked with NASA and the European Space Agency on missions to Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, and Titan, Taylor offers an unusually experienced perspective in this comprehensive reference. Frederic W. Taylor is Halley Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford and a Distinguished Visiting Scientist in the Earth and Space Sciences Division at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. His research interests include the physics of planetary atmospheres; experimental methods for studying atmospheres; and the theory of atmospheric radiation and atmospheric molecular spectroscopy.
