Download or read book Shallow Lakes ’95 written by Lech Kufel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shallow lakes differ from deep ones in many aspects of nutrient dynamics, biotic structure and interactions of various trophic levels. Though very common in European lowlands, shallow lakes attract inadequate attention from research teams. This book aims at filling gaps in our knowledge of the processes which take place in non-stratified lakes. It contains proceedings from the international conference `Shallow Lakes *95' held in Mikolajki, Poland, on 20-26 August 1995. In more than 50 original papers up-to-date views on eutrophication, degradation and recovery of shallow lakes are presented. The first four sections of the book (Nutrient fluxes, Biotic structure, Trophic interactions and Whole lake studies) deal with theoretical aspects of lake functioning while the fifth (Biomanipulation, restoration and management) is devoted to practical measures undertaken to improve water quality in shallow lakes. The book is therefore addressed to university biologists and ecologists and PhD students, as well as to managers involved in restoration of shallow lakes.

Book excerpt: This Workshop was organized to assess the status of knowledge on the behaviour of phosphorus in sediments and to define gaps and reassess research strategies, particularly with respect to prevalent methodology and future approach; and to define gaps and reassess research strategies for water management measures in aquatic ecosystems, especially in relation to the release of phosphorus from the sediments and its impact on the functioning of the whole system.
Download or read book Shallow Lakes ’98 written by Norbert Walz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-01-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume combines articles on shallow lakes from leading European scientists in limnology. It covers aspects of the dynamics of macrophytes, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos, nutrient loading, littoral-pelagic interactions, and sediment-water interactions, as well as lake management. The object was not to separate theory (e.g. modelling) and management in order to generate new theories for the understanding of shallow lake ecosystems. The volume provides a comprehensive overview of the ecology of shallow lakes, a lake type which differs in prominent ways from deeper lakes. The broad spectrum of issues may also reflect the spectrum of interested readers such as limnologists, water engineers, hydrobiologists, who will be informed on a high level about new developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Shallow Lakes, held at Dalfsen, The Netherlands, in June 2005. The theme of the symposium was Shallow Lakes in a Changing World, and it dealt with water-quality issues, such as changes in lake limnology, especially those driven by eutrophication and pollution, increased nutrient loading and productivity, perennial blooms of cyanobacteria and loss of biodiversity.
Book Synopsis The Chemical Investigation of Recent Lake Sediments from Wisconsin Lakes and Their Interpretation by : Gilbert Carl Bortleson
Download or read book The Chemical Investigation of Recent Lake Sediments from Wisconsin Lakes and Their Interpretation written by Gilbert Carl Bortleson and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To trace the effects of cultural eutrophication, one meter sediment cores were used to determine the history of calcareous and noncalcareous Wisconsin lakes. Cores were analyzed for carbon, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, aluminum, iron, and manganese. Determinations of organic nitrogen, exchangeable ammonium and acid soluble phosphorus were made on selected sedimentary profiles. Recent sedimentation rates and identification of pre- and postcultural sediments were determined by ragweed pollen. Enrichment of phosphorus in postcultural Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, sediments are the effect of increased phosphorus supply from domestic sewage. Chemical stratigraphy of concentration-depth diagrams permit a qualitative evaluation of cultural activities. Potentialities and limitations of using recent lake sediments to evaluate eutrophication are discussed.
Book Synopsis Internal Phosphorus Loading in Lakes by : Bryan Spears
Download or read book Internal Phosphorus Loading in Lakes written by Bryan Spears and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrient enrichment of lakes is a ubiquitous problem, impacting ecological and human health on a global scale by accelerating the pace of eutrophication, often resulting in algal blooms, depleted dissolved oxygen concentrations, and economic harm to surrounding communities. In many lakes, bed sediments are a major but unrecognized source of phosphorus to the water, a process known as internal phosphorus loading. Internal loading is notoriously difficult to measure and manage given the need to access processes operating on and within the lakebed. In addition, climate change threatens to promote internal loading. For example, warming of lakes can increase the release of phosphorus from sediments due to 1) longer and stronger periods of lake stratification resulting in sediment anoxia and 2) enhanced microbial decomposition of organic matter. Degraded water quality not only impairs ecological health but also can influence social pride and community morale. This is the first book dedicated to the understanding of internal phosphorus loading in lakes and examines the causes, the ecological and societal impacts, and options for managing this complex phenomenon. With contributions from leading experts, this edited volume provides a broad view of internal phosphorus loading, methods for measurement, management practices for water quality improvement, case studies from around the world, and recommendations for addressing this growing concern. It is essential reading for environmental and engineering professionals involved in lake and reservoir management, students and faculty in limnology, state and federal authorities involved in water quality regulation, and lakefront homeowners and management boards interested in maintaining lake water quality and managing algal blooms. Key Features * First-ever comprehensive volume on internal phosphorous loading that clearly details what it is and why it occurs * Identifies and explores the drivers of internal phosphorus loading * Provi
Book Synopsis Nutrient Dynamics and Biological Structure in Shallow Freshwater and Brackish Lakes by : E. Mortensen
Download or read book Nutrient Dynamics and Biological Structure in Shallow Freshwater and Brackish Lakes written by E. Mortensen and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-03-31 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nutrient dynamics and biological structure of shallow non-stratified lakes differ markedly from that of deep and stratified lakes: for example, the return of nutrients lost through sedimentation is faster and the potential importance of fish and submerged macrophytes as food-web regulators is greater. In addition shallow lakes are more easily influenced by fluctuations in the physical environment caused by wind disturbance, temperature change, etc. Although shallow lakes are often the most common lake type in lowland countries, less attention has been paid to them than to deep stratified lakes and few comparisons have been made between shallow freshwater and brackish lakes. The volume is divided into five main themes, each introduced by an invited speaker: Nutrient dynamics with special emphasis on sediment water interactions and changes in loading (Professor Lambertus Lyklema); Biological structure and trophic interaction (Professor Stephen T. Threlkeld); Submerged macrophytes: dynamics and role in the lake ecosystems (Ass. Professor Kaj Sand Jensen); Comparison of freshwater and brackish lake ecosystems (Professor Brian Moss); Modelling the impact of nutrients, the biological structure and the recovery process (Dr Marten Scheffer).
