Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical issues such as reality and appearance, God and world, self and not-self, rebirth and immortality, free will and determination, mysticism, etc., have been examined by eastern and western philosophers as far back as the sages of Upanishads (700 BCE) in the East, and Plato (400 BCE) in the West. However, there was no significant communication among the philosophers of the East and West perhaps until the eighteenth century. Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was one of the first among the great western philosophers to recognize the value of Indian philosophies. Despite the lack of communication there are striking similarities of concepts and issues addressed by Indian and western philosophies. Also interesting is how similar are the mystical versions of different religions of the East and West. The author, Dr. Arun Chatterjee, has attempted to bring out the similarities and differences in various chapters of this book dealing with different topics. Among Indian philosophies the focus is on Vedanta philosophy and the views of Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950). The views of Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) also are presented. Other Indian philosophies such as Sankhya and Buddhism are discussed briefly. Among western religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an unique relationship that exists between the Jewish mystical teachings of Kabbalah and the highest spiritual philosophy of the Hindus, the Vedanta. Outwardly they appear to be vastly different, but study them, analyze them, come to understand what they are really saying, and the similarities become obvious. And such a study is not just an academic exercise, for it will be found that these ancient teachings not only augment each other in providing answers to the questions of life, but they also contain some very practical advice that can bring a greater measure of harmony in the conducting of our daily affairs. Kabbalah and Vedanta can be called unique as: The dedicated proponents of each one hold that theirs is the earliest spiritual teaching in the world. Neither teaching owes its origin to any single person. Neither can be called a separate religion in the sense of having its own set of man-made creeds and dogmas. The profundity of their wisdom can be considered as equal. In this book, Two Ways of Light, Dr. Judd devotes the first two chapters in examining the six principles common to all kabbalistic schools of thought, and the three essential points of Vedanta. The third chapter shows the intrinsic harmony that exists between Kabbalah and Vedanta by comparing the six principles with the three points. And the fourth chapter illustrates the practical value of both teachings through commentaries on kabbalistic verses that compare to the individual verses of a Vedantic scripture, the Isha Upanishad. Finally, in the fifth chapter will be found not only the reasons for the basic harmony that exists between these two ancient spiritual philosophies and the major world religions, but also the relevance they have for us tody. This book will be of interest for: 1). Those who wish to have a greater understanding of Kabbalah and/or Vedanta, and 2). Those who are looking for greater spiritual meaning in their lives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy, Qabbala and Vedānta: Comparative Metaphysics and Ethics, Retionalism and Mysticism, of the Jews, the Hindus and Most of the Historic Nations, as Links and Developments of One Chain of Universal Philosophy The pioneer philologist and philosopher, Frederick Schlegel, correctly surmised, in his linguistic studies, that human speech, human thought and human motives have really but one root, one sap and one goal, all basing and all culminating in monotheism. In his work on Indian Language, Literature and Philosophy (p. He says: It cannot be denied that the early Indians possessed a knowledge of the true God. All their writings are replete with such sentiments and utterances, noble, clear and austerely grand, as deeply conceived and rev erentially expressed as in any human language. The same writer, again, speaking of Hindu philosophy, says: The divine origin of man is there continually inculcated to stimulate his efforts, to animate him in the struggle to consider a reunion and reincorporation with his divine origin, as the one primary Object Of his exertions. Book excerpt: Unraveling the web of ancient traditions hidden in such texts as the Sefer Yetzirah and the Zohar, this book traces history and offers an accessible introduction to understanding Kabbalah and its practices. Jewish mysticism has flourished—sometimes brilliantly, sometimes darkly—over five thousand years. This pioneering, popular text on Jewish mysticism was the first written for a general audience, and in it, Perle Besserman offers a lively and accessible introduction to the methods, schools, and practitioners of this intriguing world. She traces the history of Kabbalah through the lives of its illustrious scholars and saints and unravels the web of ancient traditions hidden in such texts as Sefer Yetzirah and the Zohar. Running through these pages are the words of the outstanding Kabbalists and mystics—including Simeon bar Yohai, Isaac Luria, Abraham Abulafia, and the Baal Shem Tov—giving instructions on practices ranging from contemplation of the Bible’s secret teachings to ritual, ecstatic prayer, and intensive meditation.

Book Synopsis Dharma and Halacha by : Ithamar Theodor
Download or read book Dharma and Halacha written by Ithamar Theodor and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades there has been a rising interest among scholars of Hinduism and Judaism in engaging in the comparative studies of these ancient traditions. Academic interests have also been inspired by the rise of interreligious dialogue by the respective religious leaders. Dharma and Halacha: Comparative Studies in Hindu-Jewish Philosophy and Religion represents a significant contribution to this emerging field, offering an examination of a wide range of topics and a rich diversity of perspectives and methodologies within each tradition, and underscoring significant affinities in textual practices, ritual purity, sacrifice, ethics and theology. Dharma refers to a Hindu term indicating law, duty, religion, morality, justice and order, and the collective body of Dharma is called Dharma-shastra. Halacha is the Hebrew term designating the Jewish spiritual path, comprising the collective body of Jewish religious laws, ethics and rituals. Although there are strong parallels between Hinduism and Judaism in topics such as textual practices and mystical experience, the link between these two religious systems, i.e. Dharma and Halacha, is especially compelling and provides a framework for the comparative study of these two traditions. The book begins with an introduction to Hindu-Jewish comparative studies and recent interreligious encounters. Part I of the book titled “Ritual and Sacrifice,” encompasses the themes of sacrifice, holiness, and worship. Part II titled "Ethics," is devoted to comparing ethical systems in both traditions, highlighting the manifold ways in which the sacred is embodied in the mundane. Part III of the book titled "Theology," addresses common themes and phenomena in spiritual leadership, as well as textual metaphors for mystical and visionary experiences in Hinduism and Judaism. The epilogue offers a retrospective on Hindu-Jewish encounters, mapping historic as well as contemporary academic initiatives and collaborations.
