Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1874 edition. Excerpt: ... II. ORGANIC CHARACTERISTICS. Passions and instincts are the roots of individual and of social action. Bees swarm by instinct, seek for wax and honey in their daily rounds amongst the flowers, and build their honeycombs in a sheltered hive, wherever most conveniently situated. Other species of insects have different instincts, and obey these tendencies as fatally as an apple falls to the ground, or the earth" moves round the sun in a predetermined orbit. Greater or lesser degrees pertain to each species. The spider has one sort of intellectual endowment, the ant-lion has another: one weaves a web to catch flies for his provision, the other delves a conical pit in fine sand for his unwary victims to fall into, but each of these operations denotes a particular kind of intellect to construct the snares intended to procure the prey the insects want to feed upon. These predacious instincts of small insects might be thought superior to the instincts of some of the higher animals, such as sheep, which seem almost devoid of intelligence beyond that of selecting food in accordance with the sense of taste; though, possibly, in a wild state, before their innate faculties have been blunted by artificial conditions, even sheep may know how and where to seek for the food which is by nature fitted for them. How far degrees of intelligence accompany various kinds of sensitivity or sensibility and instinct is not always easy to determine, even in the lowest polyps, such as the sea-anemone, while some degrees of intellect accompany the higher animals of all species, and still higher degrees of intellect belong to the innate instincts of mankind, even where the faculties of reason are undeveloped in individuals or in tribes. By faculties of reason, as...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Evolution In presenting the following pages to the public, the author wishes it to be understood that he does not expect to convert any to a belief in evolution. He addresses those who accept the doctrine in some form or other as established, although he has endeavoured, as concisely as possible, to present the reader with the reasons for accepting it. Those who remain unconvinced by the elaborate works of Darwin, Spencer, and others will probably not accept the views enunciated in these pages, which, however, it is hoped, will not be unacceptable to many who wish to reconcile the theory of evolution with the highest aims of human thought. Neither does the writer of the present essay claim a place for it with the more solid works of original research quoted by him. The facts are, with few exceptions, widely known, and will be found in the works referred to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From mitochondria to meerkats, the natural world is full of spectacular examples of social behaviour. In the early 1960s Bill Hamilton changed the way we think about how such behaviour evolves. He introduced three key innovations - now known as Hamilton's rule, kin selection, and inclusive fitness - which have been enormously influential, but which remain the subject of fierce controversy. Hamilton's pioneering work kick-started a research program now known as social evolution theory. This is a book about the philosophical foundations and future prospects of that program. Part I, "Foundations", is a careful exposition and defence of Hamilton's ideas, with a few modifications along the way. In Part II, "Extensions", Jonathan Birch shows how these ideas can be applied to phenomena including cooperation in micro-organisms, cooperation among the cells of a multicellular organism, and culturally evolved cooperation in the earliest human societies. Birch argues that real progress can be made in understanding microbial evolution, evolutionary transitions, and human evolution by viewing them through the lens of social evolution theory, provided the theory is interpreted with care and adapted where necessary. The Philosophy of Social Evolution places social evolution theory on a firm philosophical footing and sets out exciting new directions for further work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination of Society From the Standpoint of Evolution The general thesis of this book was first published in a prospectus distributed in April, 1901. The prospectus is necessarily a mere sketch, omitting all development of details. A brief, but more satisfactory, presentation was made in the American Journal of Sociology, for May, 1902, in a paper entitled "The Capitalization of Social Development." That paper is a condensation of the work now published. The book attempts to bring the doctrine of social evolution more definitely into relation with facts established by the newer treatment of history and life. The nineteenth century accumulated a greater mass of knowledge about human society than had been possessed in any previous age. Scientific research flung out into bold relief the fact that present-day civilization is the outcome of an unfinished growth-process which began on the levels of animality long before the times of written history. The remains of prehistoric ages, buried in ascending order in the soil of the continents, were extensively studied, with impressively uniform results wherever the investigation was carried. The sources of history, from ancient to modern times, were critically sifted. Altogether, through the labors of an army of inquirers, an immense mass of material has been accumulated, not only in immediate connection with the study of history and prehistoric archaeology, but along with the pursuit of investigations into the customs, manners, and arts of the lower races, the facts of human and animal psychology, and the action of the earth's physical forces. This material, however, is largely undigested. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Development and Purpose: An Essay Towards, a Philosophy of Evolution The field covered in this volume is wide and the treatment in many parts is necessarily short and summary. In justi fication it must be said here that. The book completes a scheme which has occupied the writer for twenty-six years and has been carried through successive stages in three previous works. But in the meantime it was inevitable that the scheme itself should Change and expand, and the precise aim of this final instalment will therefore be most readily explained by giving a slight account of the manner in which the subject developed in the writer's mind during the somewhat extended period in question. In the middle of the Eighties, when the writer was first studying philosophy, the biological theory of evolution was already very generally accepted, and the philosophical extension of the theory by Mr. Herbert Spencer was, except in academic circles, in the heyday of its influence. Philosophically Mr. Spencer was not a materialist. But his metaphysical safeguards did not rescue the evolution theory from some of the most unfortunate consequences of a materialistic system. Evolution, as thus interpreted, meant, in its bearing on human life and action, essentially two things. It meant that the human mind must be regarded as an organ like the lungs or the liver evolved in the struggle for existence with the fiinction of adjusting. Already reveals to us how the intellect has been formed, by an uninterrupted progress, along a line which ascends through the vertebrate series up to man. It shows us in the faculty of understanding an appendage of the faculty of acting, a more and more precise, more and more complex and supple adaptation of the consciousness of living be ings to the conditions of existence that are made for them. Hence should result this consequence that our intellect, in the narrow sense of the word, is intended to secure the perfect fitting of our body to its environment, to represent the relations of external things among themselves - ia short, to, think Mr. Such will indeed be one of the conclusions of the present essay. We shall see that the human intellect feels at home among inanimate objects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Universal History: Its Method and Its Relation to the Physical Sciences Since the days of Heracleitus, the Universe, with all that it contains, has been conceived as in a state of perpetual flux, and as therefore having a history - a history of the fluxes, both quantitative and qualitative - which it has undergone in the process of Time. Sir Robert Ball tells us that by our telescopes and on our photographs we can discern something like one hundred million luminous stars, and that the visible stars do not form the hundredth, probably not the thousandth, probably not even the millionth, part of the worlds which lurk unseen in the dark, unfathomed caves of the upper ocean. Each of these worlds has a history, if we could but know it. The solar system has a history which the science of men is slowly spelling out. The round world which we inhabit has a history, and all the sciences, in the ascending scales of their successive evolution, combine to set that history in a framework of periodic times and of systematic ideas. Geology tells us how our Mother Earth through long aeons of the primeval night-time was balancing and modulating the cosmic forces which were destined in the end to prepare a theatre for man. In Palaeontology we rehearse the story of epochs which have long since been surmounted, and move among the vanished forms of plants and animals which have long since perished from the face of the earth. "At the bottom of the ocean lie the mountains of former ages, on the summits of the Andes and Himalayas are the sands of ancient ocean-beds," while the ichthian and saurian monsters which lie sepulchred in those rock-ribbed pyramids have been described as the "mummied pharaohs" of an extinct animal dynasty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution Hypothesis: A Criticism of the New Cosmic Philosophy HE Evolution Hypothesis has stamped its impress on the thought of our time. It claims to dominate the whole field of experience, and to direct all inquiry. As a theory of universal truth, it lies open to the criticism of every student of philo sophy. How far in certain groups of physical phenomena it expresses justly the law of change, I do not discuss. Examination in detail, over the whole extent of the knowable, can be effectively conducted only by division of labour among many workers, each handling some part of the question, which he has made the subject of special study. In this way the measure of truth contained in the hypothesis must ultimately be defined. My purpose is to deal with the theory as it undertakes to. Formulate the entire cosmic movement within the knowable - as it aims at the unification of all knowledge.
