Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Spiritualism: Its Phenomena and Philosophy The angels of the Bible are ministering spirits, who, from their very nature and constitution, are best adapted to the work of guardianship and ministration, and the work is best adapted to their growth and development. Such guardianship is una Vailing unless the spirits can communicate with those they pro tect. T liat they can do so, he proves by the Bible, the ancients, and the fathers and leaders of the Church. Having thus fortified himself with authority, he brings forward the heavy artillery of modern phenomena, held in reserve. He would not indorse the manifestations given at public Circles, regard ing the rappings as a humbug, until forced on his attention by rappings and spirit writing in his own family. He felt the presence of spirits and conversed with them, yet he remained ln doubt of the reality of Spiritualism. His educational preju dices stood in his way, and an article he published at that time gives a doubtful sound. He believes ln sp1r1t communion, but discards the manifestations. In 1853 he continued his investigation of Spiritualism. Be lieving it to be the prince of humbugs, he endeavored to detect and expose it. Through the mediumship of a colored servant-girl in his family, he was first convinced that the phe nomena could not be explained by any law of physics or meta physics with which he was acquainted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychic Philosophy as the Foundation of a Religion of Natural Law The writer of this book was one of the very large number of persons who, alive to the beauty of ideal Christian character, was quite unable to accept current forms of Christian dogma. While thus disturbed in mind he made the error of seeking not for Truth, but for the Truth, from the Chris tian Churches, from modern leaders of thought, and even from Oriental faiths, whose foundations he endeavoured to reach, and whose inner meaning he sought to understand. His attention was invited to the psychic phenomena, that have now attracted the incredulous or bewil dered notice of so many. He expected little from these things, and began the inquiry into them with entire and pronounced scepticism. But he was at last convinced that, whatever the explanation might prove to be, he was in presence of facts which promised solution to his difficulties, because these facts bear on the main problem - whether the human soul is but a name for the sum of vital functions, or has an objective existence, embodied and disem bodied. He has attempted in this book to sum marise the psychic facts and to show the inferences which seem to him to flow from them, in the hope that they may be of use to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Religion on the Basis of Its History The question of the origin of religion, and of the nature of primitive religion, was not, as a rule, seriously taken up by the early philosophy of religion, nor made the subject of any thorough investi gation; in recent times, however, it has come to the front, and has become one of the burning questions of religious science. And this is as it should be. For the nature of a mental phenomenon such as religion, is only unfolded in the totality of its development in history, and can only be understood as a whole when its origin has been traced, and its springs laid bare. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Force, Its Mental and Moral Correlates; And on That Which Is Supposed to Underlie All Phenomena: With Speculations on Spiritualism, and Other Abnormal Conditions of Mind The doctrine of Philosophical Necessity, notwithstanding its supposed horrible tendency to sap the foundation of morals, has been elevated from the regions below, where, according to Milton, its discussion furnished fit occupation and amusement for devils only, - to form the base of Social Science. Philosophical Necessity is only another name for Law or a fixed order of Nature in the department of Mind, and there can be no Social Science without it. This I have endeavoured to make plain in my work on The Philosophy of Necessity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Newer Spiritualism In this, his posthumous work, Myers does not indeed disdain whatever support may be derived from the trance utterances and the physical phenomena. But in both directions the evidence has been SO multi plied since his death that it will be necessary to devote the bulk of this book to its discussion. Myers' peculiar contribution to the subject may be considered more brie y, not, indeed, as being less important, but because the nine years which have elapsed have brought nothing to strengthen his position. Brie y, Myers essayed to lift the whole problem of man's immortality to a higher level, and propounded an argument of far wider scope, whose cogency we are hardly yet in a position accurately to estimate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Reality: A Study in the Philosophy of Mysticism The writer has great pleasure in acknowledging first his indebtedness to Dr Burns - Gibson, late of Harlesden, whose private philosophical class it was his privilege for some years to attend, and from whose acute criticisms and unusual dialectical skill in metaphysics he received much stimulus and instruction. The writer desires to acknowledge also the unfailing sympathy, help, and encouragement derived from his frequent intercourse, by speech and correspondence, with his gifted friend, the Rev. John Oates of North Finchley. And lastly he would thank another friend, Mr Robert Mowbray, ma. And fellow-student with him at the above-mentioned class, for valuable hints and suggestions during the writing of this volume, It is perhaps hardly needful to add that none of these gentle men are at all responsible for any of the views herein presented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discussion of the Facts and Philosophy of Ancient and Modern Spiritualism About the first of June, 1852, I received a friendly note from Dr. B. W. Richmond, of Jefferson, Ohio, requesting me to embody the facts and reasons in support of the alleged Spiritual origin of the Manifestations, which he proposed to accompany with a critical review and numerous facts and observations of his own, and expressing a desire that the whole might be published in a volume of several hundred pages. Dr. Richmond's letters in the Tribune had previously attracted very general attention, and he was regarded, at that time, as the most formidable opponent to the Spiritual theory in this country. Indeed, the editor of the Tribune had expressed the opinion that he was the ablest man which the Spiritual phenomena had called into the field; and it was manifest to all, that he had at least the candor to acknowledge the facts, if he had not the ability to explain them, on his favorite hypothesis. All other opposing theories seemed childish or absurd, while the one suggested by my correspondent certainly demanded the most serious consideration. I had no wish to shun the proposed ordeal; but having to perform, in addition to numerous other duties, the entire editorial labor of a weekly paper and a monthly magazine, I was quite too much occupied to accept the proposition of Dr. Richmond, which, for these reasons, was respectfully declined. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles and Modern Spiritualism I am well aware that my scientific friends are some what puzzled to account for what they consider to be my delusion, and believe that it has injuriously affected what ever power I may have once possessed of dealing with the philosophy of Natural History. One of them - Mr. Anton Dohrn - has expressed this plainly. I am informed that, in an article entitled Englische Kritiker und Anti Kritiker des Darwinismus, published in 1861, he has put forth the opinion that Spiritualism and Natural Selection are incompatible, and that my divergence from the views of Mr. Darwin arises from my belief in Spiritualism. He also supposes that in accepting the spiritual doctrines I have been to some extent influenced by clerical and reli gions prejudice. As Mr. Dohrn's views may be those of other scientific friends, I may perhaps be excused for entering into some personal details in reply. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Creation the System of Philosophy, From the Standpoint of the Christian and of the Word IF it is thought that religion is dogmatic, and for want of reason is unscientific, yet it is equally true that science in attempting to explain natural phenomena apart from God is equally irreligious. Religionists have argued that we must have faith to believe, because we do not know; while Scientists have asserted that we must know in order to believe. The two are not in agreement.
