Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Exaltation of the Flag: Proceedings at the Patriotic Mass Meeting Held by the Americans of the Philippine Islands, Which Took Place in the City of Manila, P. I., On the Evening of Friday, August 23, 1907 The incidents already Outlined, and those Of a similar nature, which had been numerous, and extended over a period of months prior to the time under consideration, were noted with growing indignation by the individual Americans, who finally saw that the natives were bent on showing public disrespect to the flag and to the national anthem, - the former being insulted in various ways wherever they came in contact with it, and the rendition Of the Star Spangled Banner being ridiculed, particularly at the public concerts given on the Luneta. Students regularly sing the Philippine National Anthem during Flag Ceremonies. It is implied that students mastered the song when they reached their intermediate grade levels and high schools. However, during the conduct of the research, it was observed and found out that students do not know how to properly sing the Philippine national anthem, which is truly an alarming situation that should be given importance by the Department of Education and other historical and cultural organizations. This book will be an eye opener to teachers and to all Filipinos that writing, singing and understanding of Philippine national anthem is quite diminishing. It is a responsibility of every Filipino citizen to continuously strengthen our sense of patriotism by appreciating and understanding our national pride, our Philippine national anthem.

Book excerpt: "Alvita Akiboh's book reveals how US national identity has been created, challenged, and transformed through embodiments of empire found in its territories, whether stamps, flags, or currency. These objects are economic and symbolic, but they also encode the relationships between territories-including the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Puerto Rico, and Palau-and the empire with which they are entangled. Akiboh shows how such items became objects of local power, transmogrifying their original intent. For even if imperial territories were not always front and center for federal lawmakers and administrators, the people living there remained continuously aware of the imperial United States, whose presence announced itself on every bit of currency, every stamp, and the local flag"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a ceremony held in 1996 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of formal Philippine independence, the U.S. flag was being lowered while the Philippine flag was being raised, and the two became entangled. In The Star-Entangled Banner, Sharon Delmendo demonstrates that this incident is indicative of the longstanding problematic relationship between the two countries. When faced with a national crisis or a compelling need to reestablish its autonomy, each nation paradoxically turns to its history with the other to define its place in the world. Each chapter of the book deals with a separate issue in this linked history: the influence of Buffalo Bill's show on the proto-nationalism of José Rizal, who is often described as the "First Filipino"; the portrayal of the Philippines in American children's books; Back to Bataan, a World War II movie starring John Wayne; the post-independence fiction of F. Sionil José; and the refusal of the U..S military to return the Balangiga Bells, which were taken as war booty during the Philippine-American War. Ultimately, Delmendo demonstrates how the effects of U.S. imperialism in the Philippines continue to resonate in U.S. foreign policy in the post cold war era and the war on terrorism.
