Book excerpt: Edward Mandell House (1858-1938) was an American diplomat, politician and presidential foreign policy advisor. Philip Dru Administrator: a Story of Tomorrow 1920 ¿ 1935 is a futuristic novel, which House published in 1912 anonymously. The story begins at a WestPoint graduation with Dru standing apart from the other graduates. Dur eventually leads the democratic western U.S. in a civil war against the plutocratic East. He becomes the dictator of America, and establishes a series of reforms that resemble the Bull Moose platform of 1912. He enacted tariff reduction, graduated income tax, and something akin to a federal reserve system, all of which became law under Wilson--without the need for a dictatorship.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philip Dru: Administrator a Story of Tomorrow, 1920-1935 In the year 1920, the student and the statesman saw many indications that the social, financial and industrial troubles that had vexed the United States of America for so long a time were about to culminate in civil war. Wealth had grown so strong, that the few were about to strangle the many, and among the great masses of the people, there was sullen and rebellious discontent. The laborer in the cities, the producer on the farm, the merchant, the professional man and all save organized capital and its satellites, saw a gloomy and hopeless future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword. In 1949, while I was visiting Ezra Pound who was a political prisoner at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Washington, D.C. (a Federal institution for the insane), Dr. Pound asked me if I had ever heard of the Federal Reserve System. I replied that I had not, as of the age of 25. He then showed me a ten dollar bill marked ""Federal Reserve Note"" and asked me if I would do some research at the Library of Congress on the Federal Reserve System which had issued this bill. Pound was unable to go to the Library himself, as he was being held without trial as a political prisoner by the United States government. After he was denied broadcasting time in the U.S., Dr. Pound broadcast from Italy in an effort to persuade people of the United States not to enter World War II. Franklin D. Roosevelt had personally ordered Pound's indictment, spurred by the demands of his three personal assistants, Harry Dexter White, Lauchlin Currie, and Alger Hiss, all connected with Communist espionage.

Book excerpt: In 1912, Edward Mandell House published his book Philip Dru: An Administrator. Drawing inspiration from Plato's ideal of the caring philosopher-king, House's novel depicts the rise of a benevolent dictator in early 20th century America. Written as part fictional biography and part fictional history, Philip Dru offers an intriguing insight into the fledgling Administrative State and how some contemporaries viewed it as a potential tool for social progress. Although over 100 years have passed since its publication, the questions central to the novel are extraordinarily relevant to society today: How should the government address oppression? How should the government handle income and wealth inequality? What measures can be taken to keep a government from becoming corrupt?

Book Synopsis The Impact of Science on Society by : Bertrand Russell
Download or read book The Impact of Science on Society written by Bertrand Russell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the revolutionary effects of science and technology are obvious enough. Bertrand Russell saw in the 1950s that there are also many negative aspects of scientific innovation. Insightful and controversial in equal measure, Russell argues that science offers the world greater well-being than it has ever known, on the condition that prosperity is dispersed; power is diffused by means of a single, world government; birth rates do not become too high; and war is abolished. Russell acknowledges that is a tall order, but remains essentially optimistic. He imagines mankind in a 'race between human skill as to means and human folly as to ends', but believes human society will ultimately choose the path of reason. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new Preface by Tim Sluckin.
