It was at once obvious that the preparation of it for publication would call for a knowledge of economics and sociology, and experience in investigation such as I did not myself possess. I was enabled to produce the work by the generous offer of Miss B.L. Hutchins to undertake the editing of it. Miss Hutchins had become a friend of ours during the last two years of my husbands life, and he had often discussed with her the subjects in which both were interested.
