Download or read book Red Clover Science written by N.L. Taylor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the literature on red clover since about 1985. In each of the 17 chapters, an effort was made to summarize the earlier literature and to integrate the recent findings into this background. The timing is appropriate with the present interest in sustainable agriculture, in which red clover was so prominent in the past. This is the first book to be published which deals solely with this important forage species. Audience: Primarily scientists and scientifically trained technicians who will appreciate an up-to-date summary on red clover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the reader relevant information about actual knowledge about the process of allelopathy, covering all aspects from the molecular to the ecological level. Special relevance is given to the physiological and ecophysiological aspects of allelopathy. Several ecosystems are studied and methodological considerations are taken into account in several different chapters. The book has been written to be useful both for Ph.D. students and for senior researchers, so the chapters include all necessary information to be read by beginners, but they also include a lot of useful information and discussion for the initiated.

Book Synopsis Breeding Fodder Crops for Marginal Conditions by : O.A. Rognli
Download or read book Breeding Fodder Crops for Marginal Conditions written by O.A. Rognli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers and posters presented at the 18th Eucarpia Fodder Crops Section Meeting held at Loen, Nordfjord, Norway in August 1993. In most environments some form of marginal conditions or stress prevails. Few crops are being produced under such a wide range of environmental and management stresses as fodder crops. Improved adaptation of fodder crops to marginal conditions is crucial in developing sustainable, low-input agricultural systems. The book is unique in demonstrating the large diversity both in crops and environmental stresses that confront the forage breeders. Both general and specific aspects of adaptation to marginal growing conditions are presented, ranging from problems caused by snow and ice in the Subarctic regions of Europe to the severe drought problems in the Mediterranean regions. For everyone involved in studies of adaptation and breeding of perennial plants for marginal conditions or stress environments.
Book Synopsis Biotechnology in Forage and Turf Grass Improvement by : German Spangenberg
Download or read book Biotechnology in Forage and Turf Grass Improvement written by German Spangenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-08-19 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows the significant progress made in establishing the methodological basis for the genetic manipulation of forage and turf grasses, with particular emphasis on our most important temperate grasses, the fescues and ryegrasses. It provides detailed and beautifully illustrated descriptions of all relevant methodological aspects of molecular breeding of forage and turf grasses. The topics covered range from the establishment of plant regeneration systems from in vitro cultures, the recovery of haploids and somaclonal variants, the combination of whole or partial genomes by somatic hybridization, and the production of transgenic plants, to the development of molecular markers.

Download or read book Heterosis written by R. Frankel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When trying to solicit authors for this book it became apparent that the causal factors for heterosis at the physiological and biochemical level are today almost as obscure as they were 30 years ago. Though biometrical-genetical analyses point to dispersion of complementary genes - not overdominance - as the major cause of the phenomenon, plant breeders' experience still suggests a cautious, pragmatic approach to the dominance-overdominance controversy in breeding hybrid cultivars. Thus we are faced with a striking discordance between our limited comprehension of the causal factors and mechanism of heter osis on the one hand, and the extensive agricultural practice of utiliza tion of hybrid vigor on the other. Such utilization is the result of the economic value of hybrid combinations displaying superior yields and qualities as well as stability of performance, of benefits derived in breeding programs, and of the enhanced varietal protection of proprietary rights. No comprehensive and critical analysis of the phenomenon of heterosis in economic plants has been published for the last three decades since the now classical book Heterosis, edited by J . W. Gowen (Iowa State College Press, Ames, Iowa, 1952). The present book attempts to fill the gap and to assess the status of our present knowl edge of the concept, the basis, the extent, and the application of heterosis in economic plants.
