The symposium was organized by the Section of the structure of glass and the nature of the glassy state of the Scientific Council for the problem "New Tech nical Materials and Coatings Based on Glass and Refractory Compounds" of the State Committee for Science and Technology of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, by the Scientific Council for the problem "Physicochemical Principles of Production of New Heat-Resistant Inorganic Mate rials" of the Division of Physical Chemistry and Technology of Inorganic Materials, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, by the Leningrad regional board of the D. 1. Mendeleev All-Union Chemi cal Society, and by the 1. V. Grebenshchikov Institute of Silicate Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The present collection consists of the Proceedings of the Symposium and is No. 3 in Vol. 5 of the series "The Glassy State," published by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1955. The book contains the results of theoretical and experimental investigations of phase sep aration of glasses into two glassy phases, and of the influence of this submicroscopically heter ogeneous structure on certain properties of glass. Metastable phase separation in glasses was discovered about 10 years ago.

The book covers a variety of techniques ranging from the very common (like Raman and FTIR) to the most recent (and less well known) ones, like SEM for structural analysis and photoelastic measurements. The level of the chapters make it suitable for researchers and for graduate students about to start their research work. It will also: discuss the technique itself, background, nuances when it comes to looking at glassy materials, interpretation of results, case studies, and recent and near-future innovations Fill a widening gap in modern techniques for glass characterization Provide much needed updates on the multiple essential characterization techniques

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was learned that Professor Scholze was revising his classic work on the nature, structure, and properties of glass, it was natural to conceive the idea of translating the new edition into English. Professor Scholze enthusiastically endorsed this suggestion and asked for the concurrence of his publisher, Springer-Verlag. Springer-Verlag welcomed the idea and readily agreed to provide support. With the essential agreements in place, Professor Michael Lakin, Professor of German at Alfred University, was asked to do the transla tion, and I subsequently agreed to work with Professor Lakin to check for technical accuracy. I was happy to accept this task because of my respect for Professor Scholze and because of the value to glass scientists and engineers of having available an English edition of Glas. Professor Scholze died before publication ofthis English edition of his work. However, he had reviewed the entire English text and had approved it. Professor Lakin and I appreciated the confidence he placed in us, and we were gratified with his acceptance of our efforts. His scientific contributions were numerous and important; they will long serve as guideposts for research in many key areas. We hope this translation of Glas will help make his legacy accessible to more people. Professor Lakin and I have tried to provide a translation that is accurate and true to the original but that has a distinctive English "flavor"; that is, it is not just a literal translation.

Book excerpt: Glass Surfaces covers the proceedings of the Fourth Rolla Ceramic Materials Conference on Glass Surfaces. The book presents 38 papers that are organized according to their respective theme. The text first covers the structure of subsurface layers and their role in glass technology, and then proceeds to discussing surface characterization and experimental techniques. Next, the book talks about interfacial phenomena, such as interdiffusion of hydrogen and alkali ions in a glass surface and interdiffusion of hydrogen and alkali ions in a glass surface. The fourth part covers corrosion and chemical durability, which covers topics related to crack, fatigue, and weathering. The next part deals with adsorption, while the last part tackles surface coatings, films, and treatments. The book will be of great use to scientists and professionals in the glass industry.
