Book excerpt: The phase separation of incompatible liquids has been a topic of significant importance in chemical and industrial engineering for many years. Well-understood examples of this phenomenon include the phase separation of oil with water and the phase separation of non-polar organic solvents with water. Similar behavior is observed when aqueous solutions of two or more incompatible polymers or polymers and salts are mixed. In these mixtures (referred to as aqueous two-phase systems), the separated phases are composed mostly of water. Aqueous two-phase systems have been used extensively for the extraction of high-value biological products from mixtures of biological materials. In recent years, aqueous two-phase systems have also found increased use as materials for streamlining and improving the capabilities of cell and molecular assays, and for the design of advanced cell culture systems. Similar behavior of biological materials in living systems has also been observed, with emerging roles in cell physiology.

Book excerpt: Low shear-rate viscosity measurements of a fluid in a closed system tend to exclude the standard viscometers because of the difficulty involved in isolating the moving components of such instruments from the sample chamber. Yet, there is a need to develop instruments which permit isolation of the sample chamber especially when the fluid of interest is carcinogenic and/or susceptible to interaction with the external environment. Phase separation of polymer blends an interesting topic for researchers to study extensively theoretically and experimentally for many decades. Polymer phase separation has a morphology of dot, line or bi-continuous shape. Application of this phase separation morphology is used for many potential applications such as photovoltaic devices, light-emitting diodes, antireflection coatings and biological devices. Moreover, a new phase-change material might be found to have the best germanium, antimony and tellurium (Ge-Sb-Te) alloy. The goal was to find the best contrast between the crystalline and amorphous states and they are used for electronic device memory either DRAM or Flash chips finally. For polymer solutions, many approaches and techniques have been used to determine the coexistence curve including the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and the upper critical solution temperature (UCST). A modified centrifugal apparatus for measuring the coexistence curves of a polymer solution: polystyrene solution in methyl cyclohexane is reported for the first time in research laboratory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase separation in complex fluids such as polymers has been the subject of several experimental and theoretical studies in recent years. Understanding the phase separation mechanisms and controlling morphological evolution are very important for designing various advanced materials with novel mechanical, optical, electrical, and transport properties. In polymer blends, dynamic asymmetry is induced by a large difference in glass transition temperature. In this work, phase separation behavior of ternary blends of polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polyisoprene, PS/PVME/PI, and polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/poly(ethyl methacrylate), PS/PVME/PEMA are investigated. Ternary blends of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA exhibit complex phase separation behavior since PS and PVME have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior, while PI and PS (or PVME), PEMA and PS (or PVME) have upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior. 2D and 3D phase diagrams for these two ternary systems were plotted by both Flory-Huggins incompressible and regular solution compressible models. Casting the solutions of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA blends form two phase-separated domains in most compositions: (i) PI-rich or PEMA rich, and (ii) PS/PVME-rich. Post-annealing of such samples leads to the second-stage phase separation due to unfavorable interaction of PS and PVME at temperatures about 100°C. Such behavior that is observed for the first time provides a new potential method for making different morphologies with the same system by changing annealing parameters and composition. Washing one polymer at a time using a selective solvent is used to study the morphology of ternary blends. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to study the kinetics and morphology of viscoelastic phase separation (VPS) in ternary blends.

Book excerpt: A lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phase split can be used as an alternative to steam stripping for separating polymer solutions. By adding a supercritical fluid (SCF) additive to the polymer solution the LCST can be lowered, thus, minimizing the possibility of polymer degradation and also reducing the thermal energy requirements for the process. Experimental results for the poly(ethylene-co-propylene)-hexane-SCF ethylene system are shown as an example of the type of phase behavior observed with polymer-solvent - SCF additive solutions. Adding 20% (w/w) ethylene to the polymer solution lowers the temperature of the LCST by 109 C. The addition of 30% (w/w) ethylene to the polymer solution lowers the temperature of the LCST curve sufficiently to merge this curve with the UCST curve. When the lower critical end point (LCEP) is plotted against the critical temperature of the solvent the data for poly(ethylene-co-propylene) - solvent systems are well represented by a single curve. A more fundamental modelling approach is needed to estimate the pressure of the LCEP and the concentration of SCF additive necessary to merge the LCST and the UCST curves. Patterson's theory of corresponding states can be used for these calculations. Originator-supplied keywords include: Thermodynamic, Polymers, Lower critical solution temperature, Supercritical fluid.
