Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work sheds new light on fundamental aspects of phase separation in polymer-blend thin films. A key feature underlying the theoretical models is the unification of one-dimensional thermodynamic phase equilibria with film evolution phenomena in two- and three dimensions. Initially, an established 'phase portrait' method, useful for visualising and calculating phase equilibria of polymer-blend films, is generalised to systems without convenient simplifying symmetries. Thermodynamic equilibria alone are then used to explain a film roughening mechanism in which laterally coexisting phases can have different depths in order to minimise free energy. The phase portraits are then utilised to demonstrate that simulations of lateral phase separation via a transient wetting layer, which conform very well with experiments, can be satisfactorily explained by 1D phase equilibria and a 'surface bifurcation' mechanism. Lastly, a novel 3D model of coupled phase separation and dewetting is developed, which demonstrates that surface roughening shadows phase separation in thin films.

Book excerpt: This book provides solutions and answers to physical problems in solid-state physics that have eluded scientific explanation for decades. Examples of such unsolved physics problems are: • Why are there simple metals with positive thermopower, although according to classical theory the thermopower of simple metals should always be negative? • What are the reasons for the different structures in sputtered, respective evaporated, thin films: amorphous, granular or fractal structures depending on the composition of the film alloys? • Why can amorphous metal layers exist at all, although the crystalline state is the more stable? • What is the secret of good adhesion of thin metal films to insulator substrates? • Why does the electrical conductivity σ of a thin metal layer decrease exponentially with decreasing layer thickness? • Is there a finite minimum metallic conductivity? • What is the cause of the phenomenon of the “Giant Hall Effect” in metal insulator layers? • What is the reason for Mooij's correlation? This text is intended for physicists, chemists, materials scientists, nano- and biotechnologists, students and interested laymen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest cutting-edge research on phase separation. It discusses the benefits and risks of phase separation for living cells from the perspectives of physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine. Phase separation is a physico-chemical process that induces a single solution of solvent and intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) to separate into two phases, one phase containing only solvent and the other containing IDPs in the solvent. A key molecule in phase separation is the intrinsically disordered region (IDR) proteins (IDPs), mostly comprised of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs). One of the major roles of phase separation is to generate condensates, membrane-less organelles including stress granule, Cajal body, and nucleolus. Biological actions of phase separation in various aspects of science have received increasing attention in recent years. The book consists of four parts; Part I on physics and chemistry includes topics on structural biology of RBP FUS/TLS and chaperone for phase separation, computational approach of phase separation, and chemistry of G-quadruplex of DNA and RNA. Part II on molecular biology presents molecular mechanism of IDR sequence phase separation and potential cellular function of these labile fibers, formation of membrane-less organelles, and roles of noncoding RNAs in phase separation. Part III on biology covers topics from nuclear pore complex, developmental biology regarding force-dependent remodeling, and neurobiology and higher order brain functions. Finally, Part IV on medicine presents condensates and cancer therapy, pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases based on IDPs, and responses of microglia to amyloid. The last chapter highlights the latest topic on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus takes advantage of phase separation for its infections. This book brings together the studies of phase separation in each area in a single volume. The comprehensive approach provides new insights to the research and will benefit the readers by responding to the emerging needs for understanding phase separation.

Book excerpt: Phase separation has become a fascinating subject in the discussion of cuprate superconductors. All these materials have layered structures containing CU02 planes as the most important building blocks. They are coupled only weakly so that the electronic properties show a nearly two-dimensional behaviour. Due to correlations the undoped compounds are insulators of the Mott Hubbard type exhibiting long-range antiferromagnetic order. Upon doping a rich scenario of physical phenomena appears: Even at low hole concentra tions the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature is reduced drastically and spin-glass behaviour as well as a hopping type conductivity can be observed. Further doping leads to metallic-like conductivity and below Tc to super conductivity. In this doping regime antiferromagnetic fluctuations are still observed. At very high charge carrier densities superconductivity is lost and the systems show pure metallic conduction without ,magnetic correlations. One of the most interesting phenomena in high-T c research is the interplay between magnetism and conductivity or superconductivity. Especially the behaviour of charge carriers in the antiferromagnetic background raises a number of open questions. Two scenarios become possible: the carriers tend to delocalize over the whole crystal forming a homogeneous state with band-like structure or they separate into hole-rich (conducting, superconducting) and hole-poor (insulating, antiferromagnetic) phases leading to an inhomogeneous structure.

Book excerpt: The study of the spontaneous formation of nanostructures in single crystals of several compounds is now a major area of research in strongly correlated electrons. These structures appear to originate in the competition of phases. The book addresses nanoscale phase separation, focusing on the manganese oxides known as manganites that have the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect of potential relevance for device applications. It is argued that the nanostructures are at the heart of the CMR phenomenon. The book contains updated information on manganite research directed to experts, both theorists and experimentalists. However, graduate students or postdocs will find considerable introductory material, including elements of computational physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of aqueous two-phase systems for the partitioning of macromolecules, organelles and cells was originally developed by Per-Ake Albertsson in Sweden in the mid-fifties [1-3]. These systems were initially applied to separations of plant organelles and viruses but their use has now extended into most areas of cell biology and biochemistry [4,5]. Since 1979 biennial International Conferences on Partitioning in Aqueous Two-Phase Systems have been held in Los Angeles (1979), Sheffield (1981), Vancouver (1983) and Lund (1985). The 5th conference was held in Oxford from 23-28 August 1987 and was entitled "Advances in Separations Using Aqueous Phase Systems in Cell Biology and Biotechnology". It is the formal presentations from this meeting which comprise this volume. In contrast to earlier books on phase partitioning [4,5] this volume contains, for the first time, worldwide contributions from over sixty partitioners from a variety of scientific disciplines, thereby providing a detailed overview of the widespread application and potential of bioseparations using phase partitioning. Disciplines include Biophysics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Process Engineering, in both academic and commercial establishments. These biennial conferences allow advances in these diverse partitioning fields to be reviewed and compared; they also provide an opportunity for those considering using phase partitioning to obtain information, advice and contacts. Attendance has grown steadily over the years and 140 scientists came to Oxford. The conference consisted of ten symposia on areas of application of partitioning which have been organised as specific chapters in this volume.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this workshop was to review and discuss the electronic and chemical properties of layered cuprate superconductors. These are doped antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulators, and there is the possibility of a dynamic phase separation into metallic clusters and AFM areas. A clarification on the existence and the mechanism of such a phase separation is believed to be crucial for the understanding of high-Tc superconductivity in cuprates. On the one hand, theoretical and recent experimental indications in favor of this possibility were presented, on the other hand experimental papers expressing more skeptical views were also delivered. Related work on phase separations of chemical and structural origin was also included, followed by contributions on the question; “If phase separation is present, what is the pairing mechanism in the metallic clusters?”.
