Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We demonstrate for the first time anti-guided coupling of two adjacent vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL's), obtaining a 1-by-2 phase-locked array at 869 nm. The lateral index modification required for anti-guiding is achieved by a patterned 3-rim etch performed between two epitaxial growths. In contrast with prior evanescently coupled VCSEL's, adjacent anti-guided VCSEL's can emit in-phase and produce a single on-axis lobe in the far field. Greater than 2 mW of in-phase output power is demonstrated with two VCSEL's separated by 8 [mu]m. Moreover, phase locking of two VCSEL's separated by 20 [mu]m is observed, indicating the possibility of a new class of optical circuits based upon VCSEL's that interact horizontally and emit vertically.

The performance of VCSELs now exceeds that of edge-emitting lasers in many respects, and offers a superior optical beam and much easier monolithic integrability. As the VCSEL technology improves furth

Book Synopsis Injection-locked Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) for Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation by : Sharad Bhooplapur
Download or read book Injection-locked Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) for Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation written by Sharad Bhooplapur and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. Modulators An array of VCSELs is packaged and characterized for use as a modulator for rapid-update pulse-shaping at GHz rates. The amplitude and phase modulation characteristics of an injection-locked VCSEL are simultaneously measured at GHz modulation rates. 2. Optical Frequency Comb Sources An actively mode-locked semiconductor laser was assembled, with a 12.5 GHz repetition rate, ~ 200 individually resolvable comblines directly out of the laser, and high frequency stability. In addition, optical frequency comb sources are generated by modulation of a single frequency laser. 3. High-resolution optical spectral demultiplexers The demultiplexers are implemented using bulk optics, and are used to spatially resolve individual optical comblines onto the modulator array. 4. Optical waveform measurement techniques Several techniques are used to measure generated waveforms, especially for spectral phase measurements, including multi-heterodyne phase retrieval. In addition, an architecture for discriminating between ultrashort encoded optical pulses with record high sensitivity is demonstrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although semiconductor-diode lasers are the most compact, highest gain and most efficient laser sources, difficulties remain in developing structures that will produce high-quality, diffraction-limited output beams. Indeed, only a few designs have emerged with the potential for producing high-power, high-brightness monolithic sources. This book presents and analyzes the results of work performed over the past two decades in the development of such diode-laser arrays.

Book Synopsis Low Power Vertical Cavity Laser Arrays with Integrated Microlenses for Free Space Interconnects. Phase 1 by :
Download or read book Low Power Vertical Cavity Laser Arrays with Integrated Microlenses for Free Space Interconnects. Phase 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers are ideally suited for high performance and low cost data transmission systems. Recent advances have yielded devices with low power efficiencies far greater than for in plane lasers. This means that it is now possible to produce massively parallel two dimensional emitter arrays with acceptable heat generation. The low divergence circular optical emission enables the devices to be designed into low cost free space communication systems. Adding to the device characteristics has been the development of GaAs microlenses integrated directly into the substrate of bottom emitting Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers. These microlenses are used to collimate the emission from the lasers. This same microlens technology can also be adapted to InP based detector arrays for complete free space communications links.
