Book excerpt: Hunter-gatherer societies are constrained by their environment and the technologies available to them. However, until now the role of culture in foraging communities has not been widely considered. 'Structured Worlds' examines the role of cosmology, values, and perceptions in the archaeological histories of hunter-fisher-gatherers. The essays examine a range of cultures - Mesolithic Europe, Siberia, Jomon Japan, the Northwest Coast, the northern Plains, and High Arctic of North America - to show the role of conceptual frameworks in subsistence and settlement, technology, mobility, migration, demography, and social organization. Spanning from the early Holocene period to the present day, 'Structured Worlds' draws on archaeology and ethnography to explore the role of beliefs, ritual, and social values in the interaction between foragers and their physical and social landscape. Material culture, animal bones and settlement patterns show that the behaviours of hunter-gatherers were shaped as much by cultural concepts as by material need.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forms by which a deceased person may be brought to rest are as many as there are causes of death. In most societies the disposal of the corpse is accompanied by some form of celebration or ritual which may range from a simple act of deportment in solitude to the engagement of large masses of people in laborious and creative festivities. In a funerary context the term ritual may be taken to represent a process that incorporates all the actions performed and thoughts expressed in connection with a dying and dead person, from the preparatory pre-death stages to the final deposition of the corpse and the post-mortem stages of grief and commemoration. The contributions presented here are focused not on the examination of different funerary practices, their function and meaning, but on the changes of such rituals _ how and when they occurred and how they may be explained. Based on case studies from a range of geographical regions and from different prehistoric and historical periods, a range of key themes are examined concerning belief and ritual, body and deposition, place, performance and commemoration, exploring a complex web of practices.

Book excerpt: Kuk is a settlement at c. 1600 m altitude in the upper Wahgi Valley of the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, near Mount Hagen, the provincial capital. The site forms part of the highland spine that runs for more than 2500 km from the western head of the island of New Guinea to the end of its eastern tail. Until the early 1930s, when the region was first explored by European outsiders, it was thought to be a single, uninhabited mountain chain. Instead, it was found to be a complex area of valleys and basins inhabited by large populations of people and pigs, supported by the intensive cultivation of the tropical American sweet potato on the slopes above swampy valley bottoms. With the end of World War II, the area, with others, became a focus for the development of coffee and tea plantations, of which the establishment of Kuk Research Station was a result. Large-scale drainage of the swamps produced abundant evidence in the form of stone axes and preserved wooden digging sticks and spades for their past use in cultivation. Investigations in 1966 at a tea plantation in the upper Wahgi Valley by a small team from The Australian National University yielded a date of over 2000 years ago for a wooden stick collected from the bottom of a prehistoric ditch. The establishment of Kuk Research Station a few kilometres away shortly afterwards provided an ideal opportunity for a research project.

Book excerpt: This book is one of a series of more than 20 volumes resulting from the World Archaeological Congress, September 1986, attempting to bring together not only archaeologists and anthropologists from many parts of the world, as well as academics from contingent disciplines, but also non-academics from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. This volume develops a new approach to plant exploitation and early agriculture in a worldwide comparative context. It modifies the conceptual dichotomy between "hunter-gatherers" and "farmers", viewing human exploitation of plant resources as a global evolutionary process which incorporated the beginnings of cultivation and crop domestication. The studies throughout the book come from a worldwide range of geographical contexts, from the Andes to China and from Australia to the Upper Mid-West of North America. This work is of interest to anthropologists, archaeologists, botanists and geographers. Originally published 1989.

Book excerpt: Mind Sight, also known as "seeing without eyes," has recently become well known thanks to the internet and social media. This book is a training manual intended for adults who seek to learn seeing without eyes in the comfort of their own home. This is not designed for adults who are severely visually impaired. This text includes many exercises and access to downloadable materials from the book's website. Most importantly, it offers a day-by-day practice program that can last the reader anywhere from one to three years, depending on how regularly one engages in the training. The exercises are for self-training. No partners, groups, or instructors are needed. Training with others can be beneficial, though. These exercises are easily modified to use with a partner in person or over the internet. For those who cannot afford expensive international training events, or who would prefer solo training for any other reason, this book is ideal. Learning to perceive colors, shapes, black and white, letters, and numbers are significant portions of the training. Boredom-busters and ideas for keeping things fresh are included. The paperback version of this book also includes a training log/journal, so that readers can track their progress and record their insights. Because of this, eBook readers or audiobook listeners are urged to consider the paperback version instead, or purchase the paperback "Mind Sight Training Log" separately, or use a blank notebook. Mind Sight includes personal guidance and anecdotes from the author's own training experiences. This book is designed for adult learners only, as adults tend to learn this ability more slowly than children. The reader's patience, grit, openness, curiosity, humor, as well as a fun and relaxed attitude are required. Being a self-motivated person is extremely important for this process. This book is a pilot program. Therefore, results will largely depend on how much time and effort the reader applies to it, as well as other conditions of daily life (i.e. stress). Nothing is guaranteed. Those who train regularly may realize various meditative and self-developmental benefits. Readers who engage the training will need to purchase simple materials listed in the book for their home training. These materials are typically available in craft, hobby, and office supply stores. Through his books, online courses, and in-person classes, Sean McNamara has taught Telekinesis, Lucid Dreaming, Out-of-Body Experiences, Remote Viewing, and Meditation. He appeared in the 2020 film "SUPERHUMAN: The Invisible Made Visible" in the segment on telekinesis, as well as other shows. For more about the author, visit http://www.MindPossible.com.

Book excerpt: In Byblos in the Late Bronze Age, Marwan Kilani reconstructs the “biography” of the city of Byblos during the Late Bronze Age. Commonly described simply as a centre for the trade of wood, the city appears here as a dynamic actor involved in multiple aspects of the regional geopolitical reality. By combining the information provided by written sources and by a fresh reanalysis of the archaeological evidence, the author explores the development of the city during the Late Bronze Age, showing how the evolution of a wide range of geopolitical, economic and ideological factors resulted in periods of prosperity and decline. The Studies in the Archaeology and History of the Levant series publishes volumes from the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East. Other series offered by Brill that publish volumes from the Museum include Harvard Semitic Studies and Harvard Semitic Monographs, https://hmane.harvard.edu/publications.

Book excerpt: MOLA undertook archaeological excavations at Brackmills, Northampton, investigating part of a large Iron Age settlement and Roman complex farmstead. The remains were very well preserved having, in places, been shielded from later truncaton by colluvial deposits. Earlier remains included a late Bronze Age/early Iron Age pit alignment.
