Providers that lack knowledge of and training in Pharmacogenetic testing (PGx) are at risk of initiating medication mismanagement on their patients. Medication mismanagement is a serious issue that leads to adverse drug reactions (ADR), non-adherence to pharmacological treatment due to ADR, prolonged time to remission, increased healthcare resource utilization, and ultimately increased morbidity and mortality rate. Methods. This project was conducted in a Federally Qualified Health Clinic in New Mexico. The included participants were volunteer health care providers. These participants completed a pretest, posttest and post reinforcement survey to compare increase in provider knowledge of PGx. These results were compared and evaluated by statistical analysis during each data point and the results were disseminated in a companywide newsletter. Conclusions. The results concluded that providers who participated in PGx testing increased their overall mean knowledge by 71%. In addition, all providers exceeded the predetermined passing benchmark of 80% in-group mean with 82% passing mean score. Implications for Nursing Practice. Providers that possess a working knowledge of PGx will have the ability to confidently incorporate this tool into practice for best patient outcomes. Nurses are encouraged to glean the knowledge available for PGx and utilize PGx in practice to decrease medication mismanagement, ADR, and reduce health resource utilization in healthcare.
