Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE quadrupling of oil prices within a few months in late 1973 and early 1974 brought to an abrupt end the era of inexpensive oil. Since then the continuing increases in the price of oil traded in the international market and the higher prices of imports of manu factured goods have seriously disrupted the foreign exchange balances of many developing countries and forced them to replan their development programmes. The impact of high oil prices is felt in every country, whether developed or developing, and has brought to world attention the fact that not only are petroleum resources in limited supply and exhaustible but also that substitutes cannot be found easily or quickly. In a world faced with the certainty of declining supplies of petroleum there is widespread interest and concern among all the oil producing countries to evaluate the extent of their petroleum resources and to examine more closely the problems of their development, rates of depletion and methods of conservation. The present work reviews some of the above issues and problems in relation to Indonesia, an OPEC member, and the major oil producing country in South-East Asia. More specifically, it seeks to provide the reader with an overview of the petroleum resources of the country their nature, extent, distribution as well as the problems of their development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries that are rich in petroleum have less democracy, less economic stability, and more frequent civil wars than countries without oil. What explains this oil curse? And can it be fixed? In this groundbreaking analysis, Michael L. Ross looks at how developing nations are shaped by their mineral wealth--and how they can turn oil from a curse into a blessing. Ross traces the oil curse to the upheaval of the 1970s, when oil prices soared and governments across the developing world seized control of their countries' oil industries. Before nationalization, the oil-rich countries looked much like the rest of the world; today, they are 50 percent more likely to be ruled by autocrats--and twice as likely to descend into civil war--than countries without oil. The Oil Curse shows why oil wealth typically creates less economic growth than it should; why it produces jobs for men but not women; and why it creates more problems in poor states than in rich ones. It also warns that the global thirst for petroleum is causing companies to drill in increasingly poor nations, which could further spread the oil curse. This landmark book explains why good geology often leads to bad governance, and how this can be changed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy will be a most important topic in the 1980s. The speed with which a dozen or more trends will develop will be critical. Most of these trends are interdependent and interacting, and include: - the degree of constraint on oil and gas supplies exercised by the producers, whether inside or outside the OPEC, as they each attempt to match produc tion to their own energy needs and the funding of their own economic growth from exports, - the depth of the appreciation by industrialized countries that energy supplies will be tight and fossil fuels will be very expensive at least until the end of the century, - the actions taken by those countries to ameliorate this situation, in exploration for new oil and gas sources, in exploitation effort for new coal supplies, in acceptance ofthe need for expansion ofnuclear energy supplies, - the balancingofenergy supply and demand in centrally-planned economies, - the rate ofdevelopment within developing countries, including China, - the development and adoption ofunconventional energy sources, - the adaptation ofthe world fmancial system to new situations. These examples highlight some of the continuing problems in the energy field. These problems will be discussed in all sorts ofmeetings of all sorts ofpeople in all sorts of places and through all forms of the communication media. Other trends will materialize and take the centre of the stage, often only for a short time.

The distribution and volumes of resources available in these systems are critically important for the future of the world's economies. Geologic insights gained from studying these 149 systems and their constituent assessment units in 128 provinces and 96 countries, exclusive of the United States, allow a new look at petroleum accumulations and the rocks that are intimately associated with them.

Book excerpt: Unconventional Petroleum Geology, Second Edition presents the latest research results of global conventional and unconventional petroleum exploration and production. The first part covers the basics of unconventional petroleum geology, its introduction, concept of unconventional petroleum geology, unconventional oil and gas reservoirs, and the origin and distribution of unconventional oil and gas. The second part is focused on unconventional petroleum development technologies, including a series of technologies on resource assessment, lab analysis, geophysical interpretation, and drilling and completion. The third and final section features case studies of unconventional hydrocarbon resources, including tight oil and gas, shale oil and gas, coal bed methane, heavy oil, gas hydrates, and oil and gas in volcanic and metamorphic rocks. Provides an up-to-date, systematic, and comprehensive overview of all unconventional hydrocarbons Reorganizes and updates more than half of the first edition content, including four new chapters Includes a glossary on unconventional petroleum types, including tight-sandstone oil and gas, coal-bed gas, shale gas, oil and gas in fissure-cave-type carbonate rocks, in volcanic reservoirs, and in metamorphic rocks, heavy crude oil and natural bitumen, and gas hydrates Presents new theories, new methods, new technologies, and new management methods, helping to meet the demands of technology development and production requirements in unconventional plays

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assesses conventional known and prospective recoverable world crude oil resources by describing and analyzing giant (500 million barrels or more) oil fields. The report lists 272 known giant oil fields containing 76.7 percent of the 1011.5 billion barrels of recoverable crude oil resources as of 1975. The 33 known super-giant (5 billion barrels or more) fields contain more than half of the total. The number of giant fields discovered has been at a high plateau since the early 1960s. The amount discovered in giant fields has dropped sharply during this same period because of a precipitous decline in the number of super-giant discoveries. Ultimate conventional world oil resources are estimated to be between 1700 and 2300 billion barrels. Because few super-giants are likely to be discovered and the discovery rate of other giant fields will soon decline, most future additions will come from additional recovery from known fields, not new discoveries.

Book excerpt: l INTEREST in the off-shore petroleum resources of South-East Asia was manifested in the 1960s when development in off-shore technol ogy allowed oil companies to search beyond prospective land areas. The dramatic increases in oil prices in the early 1970s but more particularly the events of 1973 and 1974, when world oil prices were quadrupled by the oil exporting nations and major supply cutbacks were experienced by certain developed nations, further heightened this interest. Cost/price relationships had not only improved and made off-shore oil in hitherto less attractive areas commercially prospective; nations that were net importers and whose international exchange reserves were strained by the high import costs of foreign oil also found it prudent to begin looking for indigenous resources and to encourage such search. The search for and discovery of petroleum in South-East Asia on the scale in which it has been conducted in the last ten years was new to the region. It was natural, therefore, for students of South-East Asia to raise questions about its progress, questions concerning in ternational relations, social impacts, and economic policy im plications. The purpose of this study is to try and answer the question: 'What are the potentials for conflicts or cooperation among nations arising from the search for petroleum resources in the seabeds of South-East Asia?' The problem of conflicts or cooperation among nations is a topic that has many facets and may involve a multitude of issues, for example, legal, economic, technical, security, social, etc.

The materials in the book are organized thematically into sections. The text first covers the world perspectives of conventional petroleum, and then proceeds to discussing the classification of petroleum resources. Section III deals with the conventional oil and gas deposits, while Section IV talks about enhanced oil recovery. Next, the selection deals with gases in tight formations, along with tar sand, heavy oil, and oil shale deposits. The eighth section tackles gases in geopressured reservoirs, while the ninth section details other unconventional petroleum and gas deposits. The last section deals with concerns in technology transfer of petroleum and gas technology. The book will be of great use to researchers and practitioners in disciplines involved in the petroleum industry.
