Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Peter's Russian Tales The stories in this book are those that Russian peasants tell their children and each other. In Russia hardly anybody is too old for fairy stories, and I have even heard soldiers on their way to the war talking of very wise and very beautiful princesses as they drank their tea by the side of the road. I think there must be more fairy stories told in Russia than anywhere else in the world. In this book are a few of those I like best. I have taken my own way with them more or less, writing them mostly from memory. They, or versions like them, are to be found in the coloured chap-books, in Afanasiev's great collection, or in solemn, serious volumes of folklorists writing for the learned. My book is not for the learned, or indeed for grown-up people at all. No peoplewho really like fairy stories ever grow up altogether. This is a book written far away in Russia, for English children who play in deep lanes with wild roses above them in the high hedges, or by the small singing becks that dance down the grey fells at home. Russian fairyland is quite different. Under my windows the wavelets of the Volkhov (which has its part in one of the stories) are beating quietly in the dusk. A gold light burns on a timber raft floating down the river. Beyond the river in the blue midsummer twilight are the broad Russian plain and the distant forest. Some where in that forest of great trees - a forest so big that the forests of England are little woods beside it - is the hut where old Peter sits at night and tells. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using, or rather mimicking, traditional forms of storytelling Gogol created stories that are complete within themselves and only tangentially connected to a meaning or moral. His work belongs to the school of invention, where each twist and turn of the narrative is a surprise unfettered by obligation to an overarching theme. Selected from Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka, Mirgorod, and the Petersburg tales and arranged in order of composition, the thirteen stories in The Collected Tales of Nikolai Gogolencompass the breadth of Gogol's literary achievement. From the demon-haunted “St. John's Eve ” to the heartrending humiliations and trials of a titular councilor in “The Overcoat,” Gogol's knack for turning literary conventions on their heads combined with his overt joy in the art of story telling shine through in each of the tales. This translation, by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, is as vigorous and darkly funny as the original Russian. It allows readers to experience anew the unmistakable genius of a writer who paved the way for Dostevsky and Kafka.

Although I have travelled a good deal, I am no explorer. I am the average indoors man, and for that reason the story of my journey may correct some misapprehensions. There are many to be corrected. Thus, when I arranged to travel through the continent of Asia, from Peking to St. Petersburg, and told my friends of what I proposed to do, they said I should leave that kind of thing to explorers. People thought that I was about to enter on a difficult and hazardous undertaking, and no one quite believed me when I predicted that the journey would involve no risk and little hardship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Peter's Island The first idea of this story was formed during the begin ning of 1882, at St Petersburg, and it has been the aim of the authors to keep, in the main, to the original plan of the tale, and attempt to present a picture of life as it might have been in the early years of the reign of Alexander III. This will account for the prominence given to the Terror ist secret societies, which were at that time active and formidable; it will also account for some descriptions of localities and of customs, which represent the past rather than the present. Russia has changed much in twenty years, especially as regards her cosmopolitan capital. Even rubber tyres, which were once the luxuries of the private carriage owner, are now the commonplaces of the hired droschky; and a People's Garden cheers (but not inebri ates) the Russian workman with light refreshment and recreation on Peter's Island. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scribner Treasury: 22 Classics Tales Shortly after Madame Delphine appeared in 1881, Laf cadio Hearn commented on Cable's genius for recreation of a past era: The author must have made many a pil grimage to study the wrinkled faces of the houses, or perhaps to read the queer names upon the signs - as Balzac loved to do in old-fashioned Paris. Hearn here put his finger on the two factors which in uenced Cable's writing in the greatest degree; French literary models and an antiquarian bent. Book excerpt: “Fourteen uniformly strong stories in [this] outstanding noir anthology devoted to Russia’s second city . . . an ideal backdrop for crime fiction.” —Publishers Weekly The origins of St. Petersburg’s rich noir tradition come from the city’s history, urban landscape, and the weather. The freezing winds from the Baltics give rise to hopelessness, despair, and the darkest of humor. The swamps upon which the city was built cloak it in a thick haze that inspires ghostly tales and furtive behaviors. In St. Petersburg Noir, you’ll find original stories by Lena Eltang, Sergei Nosov, Alexander Kudriavstev, Andrei Kivinov, Julia Belomlinsky, Natalia Kurchatova & Ksenia Venglinskaya, Anton Chizh, Vladimir Berezin, Andrei Rubanov, Vadim Levental, Anna Solovey, Mikhail Lialin, Pavel Krusanov, and Eugene Kogan. “The Russian soul is well suited to a style defined by dark, hard-edged moodiness in underground settings. With St. Petersburg, the tsar’s ‘Window on Europe,’ we get European-style existential angst as well—not to mention the scary sociopolitical realities of the new Russia . . . For all sophisticated crime fiction readers.” —Library Journal “A riveting collection. An insightful ‘tour’ of St. Petersburg. And a spellbinding introduction to Russian literature and perspective.” —Killer Nashville

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Garland, Being Russian Folk Tales It is hardly necessary to dilate on the peculiar expressions here to be found; how that a child grows not day by day, but hour by hour, how that when the Tsar wants to drink beer is not brewed nor brandy distilled, seeing he is served at once, how the hero passes through thrice nine lands to the thirtieth country, how brothers are always in threes, and how the youngest always succeeds where his elders fail. Students of folk lore will know all about them, and the rest of us must take them on trust. Do you know why you must never go under a ladder? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Wonder Tales: With a Foreword on the Russian Skazki These older meanings, for the teller, vanished many centuries ago. The only things the skazki picture that are common to Russian country life today are those things which in Russia never change - the Wide, wind swept steppe and dense forest, the love of animal life and the comradeship of the horse, the dread and terror of the long winter cold, and the passionate welcome given to the springtime sun. Whatever else they may tell the student is in a tongue now unintelligible to the peasant, who has least of all been aware that, in these centuries old repetitions there have been handed down to a new era pictures indelible, though blurred and indistinct, of an ancient age, of times, customs, religion and deities no longer his own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Father Sergius: The Forged Coupon, Miscellaneous Stories There happened in St. Petersburg during the forties an event which startled society. A handsome youth, a prince, an officer in the Cuirassiers for whom every one had predicted the rank of aide-de-camp and a brilliant career attached to the person of Emperor Nicholas I., quitted the service. He broke with his beautiful fiancee, a lady-in-waiting, and a favourite of the empress, just a fortnight before the wedding-day, and giving his small estate to his sister, retired to a monastery to become a monk. To those who were ignorant of the hidden motives, this was an extraordinary and unaccountable step; but as regards Prince Stephen Kasatsky himself, it was such a natural move that he could not conceive an alternative. His father, a retired colonel of the Guards, died when the son was twelve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
