Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Became of Peter's Dream? focuses on the Boyar Ball of 1903, illustrating with objects the jarring inconsistencies between the westernized society of the Romanovs and the old Russian customs that Nicholas II hoped to recapture. From the traditional Russian costumes to the heirloom jewels that they wore to this festive gathering, the members of the Court of Nicholas II seemed out of touch with the real world that we now know was in historic transition. Bedecked in costumes designed by Sergei Diagilev and jewels by the firm of Faberge, they celebrated a world that Peter had rejected. tangible the complex interweave of Russian imperial tradition, spiritual aspiration, and cultural efflorescene on the eve of the Revolution. Three hundred years after the founding of St. Petersburg, we see an intimate view of the culture dramatically swept away in the forces of history. Picture frames, portraits, jewels, desk sets, cigarette boxes, icons, Easter eggs, gifts of state - even a glass vodka bottle - tell a nuanced and complex story. Drawn primarily from the collections of Marjorie Merriweather Post and a family descended from the Romanovs themselves, the objects present a vivid view of life at home as well as life at court. Published on the 300th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg, this book looks at the cultural ambitions and contradictions in Russia on the eve of the Revolution.

Book excerpt: The author presents new arguments which support the view that Paul, not Jesus, was the founder of Christianity. He argues that Jesus and also his immediate disciples James and Peter were life-long adherents of Pharisaic Judaism. Paul, however, was not, as he claimed, a native-born Jew of Pharisee upbringing, but came in fact from a Gentile background. He maintains that it was Paul alone who created a new religion by his vision of Jesus as a Divine Saviour who died to save humanity. This concept, which went far beyond the messianic claims of Jesus, was an amalgamation of ideas derived from Hellenistic religion, especially from Gnosticism and the mystery cults. Paul played a devious and adventurous political game with Jesus' followers of the so-called Jerusalem Church, who eventually disowned him. The conclusions of this historical and psychological study will come as a shock to many readers, but it is nevertheless a book which cannot be ignored by anyone concerned with the foundations of our culture and society. -- Book jacket.

Book excerpt: About Michael When people describe Michael Smith, you will hear words like; motivator, entrepreneur, fitness guru, bodybuilding, counselor, visionary, warrior, hero, comedian, trusted confidante, and faithful friend. But most of all, Michael Smith is an anointed man of God, with a heart for those who need healing, improved health or desire to live victorious lives according to scripture. Michael began his coaching and training career in 1974, coaching a swimming team to its first state championships. Just a few years later, Michael coached a Golden Gloves boxing team with three state champions, including his own state title. In a few personal tragedies that netted him several hundred stitches and scores of broken bones, most wrote Michael off as a 'has been, ' never to be again. It was at this point that the Lord 'called' Michael to "get my people fit!" In 1988 Michael shocked them all when the readers of Rocky Mountain Sport Fitness Magazine voted him the Male Aerobics Instructor of 1988! The following year topped himself when he won the Masters Division in the USA Natural Bodybuilding Championships. To prove that is wasn't a fluke victory, three months later Michael won the Natural America Masters Bodybuilding overall title! Diversifying his experience, Michael then moved to the physical therapy community, helping others rehabilitate injuries to the knees, shoulders, and back. It was at this point that Michael dropped everything to attend the Heritage Christian Center, School of Ministry in Denver, Colorado under the direction of Bishop Dennis Leonard, where he graduated in 1996. Michael is currently a personal trainer at the University of Denver where he has trained 2008 Mr. Olympia third place finisher Phillip Heath, multiple national titlist, and two-time Olympic medal winner in figure skating, Michelle Kwan, and 2008 Beijing Olympic all-round gymnast, Jessica Lopez.

Book excerpt: The Christian church hides a multitude of secrets; it is, after all, a mysterious religion. For instance, what if Jesus did not start Christianity? What if Paul, who knew Jesus only through visions, created it? In Cover-Up, author and lay minister Lawrence Goudge disputes the Christian theology that has dominated the world for millennia. G oudge, who has spent more than twenty-four years researching the suppressed history of Jesus's Jewish followers, demonstrates how the church has corrupted Jesus's message. Cover-Up takes an innovative and investigative approach to Christianity, St. Paul's credibility, and ways in which theological truths have been concealed for two thousand years. Goudge's analysis debunks the myths and provides alternative theories. A s hatred and heresy haunt Christianity's shadows, this study addresses the intolerant nature of the Christian church and sets out to right the wrongs by bringing the truth about the Nazarenes into the light of day. Goudge's message presents hope for a just world.

Book excerpt: The 1980s witnessed the ascendency of Russian women in multiple spheres of artistic creation, including literature, film, and painting. This volume may thus be said to engage not only women's artistic production but, indeed, the best and most colourful of recent Russian culture. Treating contemporary Russian women's creativity, it approaches women's texts, films, and canvasses from a range of perspectives, from anti-gendered to feminist. Some of the essays introduce writers not previously well studied, others challenge conventional interpretations and assumptions, while still others yield original viewpoints through novel juxtapositions. In addition to offering insights into the various artists under analysis, the essays map the wide terrain of issues and methodologies proliferating in cultural criticism today, and mirror the diversity that is one of the most appealing features of women's creativity in contemporary Russia.

Book excerpt: Dark, cutting, and coursed through with bright flashes of humour, crystalline imagery, and razor-sharp detail, I Become a Delight to My Enemies is a gut-wrenchingly powerful, breathtakingly beautiful meditation on the violence and shame inflicted on the female body and psyche. An experimental fiction, I Become a Delight to My Enemies uses many different voices and forms to tell the stories of the women who live in an uncanny Town, uncovering their experiences of shame, fear, cruelty, and transcendence. Sara Peters combines poetry and short prose vignettes to create a singular, unflinching portrait of a Town in which the lives of girls and women are shaped by the brutality meted upon them and by their acts of defiance and yearning towards places of safety and belonging. Through lucid detail, sparkling imagery and illumination, Peters' individual characters and the collective of The Town leap vividly, fully formed off the page. A hybrid in form, I Become a Delight to My Enemies is an awe-inspiring example of the exquisite force of words to shock and to move, from a writer of exceptional talent and potential.

This seventh volume in the Editor's Choice series provides a philosophical and historical analysis of The Chinese Dream by analyzing its major intersecting narratives - liberal, Confucian and Marxist. With chapters covering higher education strategy, social governance, socialist rule of law, the US-China trade war, technological unemployment and the emergence of the Chinese techno-state, this volume also offers an introduction to Chinese philosophy and history, and its narrative re-crafting that presents China as a global power. The author calls this process and the emerging Chinese narratives 'Educating the Future'.
