Today, they retain strong instincts for herding and hyper-vigilance, as well as being eager and highly trainable. They’re an agile and active breed, yet unlike many working Collies, their small size means they don’t seek to run around all day long. Shelties are quite happy with an hour of off-leash exercise, then home to snuggle up with the family as loyal and affectionate lap dogs. Sophisticated, playful, and idiosyncratic, Shelties excel in many roles: as service dogs, in the show ring, in agility, and as photogenic canine actors. They’re the sixth smartest dog breed on the planet, capable of learning hundreds of words, responding to facial expressions, and even social gestures like pointing (a skill that’s beyond chimpanzees). Armed with this inside information on Sheltie intelligence, you can teach your dog how to play hide-and-seek, perform amazing tricks, and even categorize and tidy her toys. Shelties: The Complete Pet Owner’s Guide is a labor of love, detailing every aspect of caring for your pet from puppyhood to old age. Enjoyed by new Sheltie adopters and long-time fans alike, you’ll revel in the 140+ gorgeous Sheltie photos from pet owners all over the world, while following the story of Casale’s own two English Shelties, Howard and Piper.

Book excerpt: Part of the Pet Lover's Guide series, this volume presents detailed information on alternative therapies for both dogs and cats. Part 1, on diet and natural therapies, addresses the importance of diet for pets, and discusses the pros and cons of both commercially available and homemade diets. It also covers the basic explanations of the various alternative therapies widely used by holistic veterinarians and readily available to pet owners (e.g., supplements and herbs, acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic and other manual healing). Part 2 makes recommendations for specific health conditions, such as skin problems or digestive tract problems, and describes how various alternative therapies are used alone or in combination with allopathic therapies to treat or relieve the condition. Finally, Part 3 offers an overview of health maintenance and preventive health, and includes information about vaccinations, flea and tick control, weight control, and caring for the aging pet. Full-color line art and photographs illustrate various plants and herbs, and also techniques such as manual therapies, massage, and other hands-on healing techniques in a user-friendly and easily identifiable manner. Special boxes labeled "Where We Stand" present the author's strong opinions on specific (sometimes controversial) issues in a highlighted, easy-to-find format. Key terms are highlighted, making them easy to locate and reference - these terms are also included in the glossary with clear, simple definitions. Important information is bulleted and placed in a shaded box, bringing the main points to the reader's attention in a quick and useful way. Clear readability makes information easily accessible to pet owners, helping them to better understand natural therapies and their uses in treating pets. It also enables veterinarians to carry the book in their practices and recommend it to clients. Written by established, recognized veterinarians, this book is a reliable source for veterinary professionals.

From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions. Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected. You'll learn: • What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him • Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship • How to relate to your dog on a canine level • There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners • How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family • The difference between discipline and punishment • And much more! Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a stronger, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

Book Synopsis Flea Biology and Control by : Friederike Krämer
Download or read book Flea Biology and Control written by Friederike Krämer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes in great detail the complex life cycle of fleas. The text is based on the example of the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis), the most important ectoparasite. The cat flea parasitizes not only dogs and cats but also warm-blooded animals and even humans. Besides being the cause of painfully itching bites and allergic skin diseases it is also a vector for viruses, bacteria, nematodes and cestodes. Over the years the market for insecticide use in small animals has become a major segment of the chemical-pharmaceutical industry. Insecticides of the new generation should not only fight the existing infestation (therapy) but should also effectively prevent new infestations for weeks (prophylaxis). The latest class of chemicals developed to this effect are chloronicotinyls (syn. neonicotinoides). Imidacloprid is the first member of this class of insecticides with a high selectivity towards the site of action within an insect. Applied to the skin it combats flea infestation and prevents new infestations for at least four weeks. Flea Biology and Control describes the entire development behind the compound, starting with its discovery all the way to its use in the final product.
